Mamata writes to NITI Aayog Chairperson as a report on West Bengal shows map of Bihar

The Hindu09-07-2025
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote to the NITI Aayog vice-chairperson on Wednesday (July 9, 2025) expressing deep concern that the map intended to show West Bengal in a report has instead printed the map of Bihar.
In her letter addressed to Suman Bery, she mentioned the report titled, 'Summary Report for the State of West Bengal' which was published by NITI Aayog on their website and was still available with the wrong map when this report was written.
In a post shared on social media handle X, Ms. Banerjee has called this a 'grave lapse in mapping West Bengal' and voiced her 'unequivocal disapproval' for the misrepresentation.
In its Summary Report on West Bengal, @NITIAayog has shockingly misrepresented Bengal as Bihar. This is a calculated, deliberate affront to Bengal's identity, culture, and dignity.
NITI Aayog must issue an unconditional public apology, immediately correct the document, and hold… pic.twitter.com/uxe8UyVDdw — All India Trinamool Congress (@AITCofficial) July 9, 2025
'Such a grave lapse in an official document of a premier national institution is not merely a technical error but an affront to the identity and dignity of the State of West Bengal. Such a blunder in an official publication of NITI Aayog, reflects an alarming lack of diligence and respect towards the States of the Union,' Ms. Banerjee's official letter to the NITI Aayog officials read.
She also raised doubts about the rigor and reliability of the institution's work and said that they are a government organisation who the people depend on for authentic information and such misrepresentation can lead to major doubt about the credibility of the organisation.
On behalf of the West Bengal Government, the CM asked for an explanation and a formal apology from the NITI Aayog officials and requested them to take immediate corrective steps to rectify the mistake on the official document. She also asked the officials to ensure that such mistakes do not happen in the future.
Trinamool Congress also took their official social media handle on X and said that such mislabeling of maps can lead to questions about the credibility of NITI Aayog's reports and publications.
'This is a direct affront to Bengal's identity and dignity, raising serious concerns about the rigour and authenticity,' the TMC official post stated, 'Trust the country's apex policy think tank to confuse Bengal with Bihar in an official state summary.'

Over 93 lakh women benefitted from Kanyashree scheme in Bengal: Mamata Banerjee

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said that over 93 lakh women have benefited from the state government's Kanyashree scheme. Taking to the social media platform X, CM Mamata said her government has spent over Rs 17,000 crore in the last 12 years to help women through this scheme. "Today is Kanyashree Day. The Kanyashree project has completed 12 years today. Many congratulations to all the Kanyashree women across the world, across the country, across Bengal. I don't think there is any other government project that has had such a big impact on women's empowerment in society in such a short time! That's why it is so popular in the world - it won the United Nations Public Service Award, winning first place among 552 projects from 62 countries," Banerjee said. 'Kanyashree Prakalpa' is a targeted conditional cash transfer scheme which is aimed at checking child marriage and retaining girls in schools and other educational institutions. In 2017, Kanyashree Prakalpa, which is a targeted conditional cash transfer scheme, received the United Nations' highest award, the first place for Public Service. "I always think that a society where women are not well off can never be well off. Empowerment of women is necessary for the development of society. It is my pride that today there are more than 93 lakh 'Kanyashree women' in our state. Seventeen and a half thousand crore taka has been handed over to them under this project. We don't just talk about women's empowerment. We do it," she said. The Chief Minister concluded by saying, "I would like to tell all the Kanyashree women to grow up in life and make the face of the country and the state shine. You will one day build a world Bengal. You will wear the crown of respect on your heads in the world."

PM Modi likely to visit Bengal on August 22 for inauguration of three new metro routes

Kolkata: Subject to last-minute changes, it is almost final that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in West Bengal on August 22 to attend two programmes, one administrative and one political. The administrative programme will be the inauguration of three new city metro railway routes, namely Noapara to Jai Hind Airport Station, Ruby to Beliaghata, and Esplanade to Sealdah. After the administrative programme, the Prime Minister is scheduled to address a political rally organised by the West Bengal unit of the BJP at Dum Dum in North 24 Parganas district. 'Initially, the Dum Dum rally was scheduled on August 20. However, since the ongoing Monsoon Session of Parliament will continue till August 21, the Prime Minister will be busy in New Delhi till that date. So a fresh proposal was sent from the Bengal unit of the BJP to fix August 22 as the date of the Dum Dum rally. Now, unless there is a last-minute change, the Prime Minister's programmes on August 22 are final,' said a state committee member of the party. Already, the West Bengal unit of the BJP has presented a plan to the party's central leadership for five public meetings by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the state during the remaining five months of the calendar year of 2025, which will mean one meeting per month by the Prime Minister during that period. At the same time, the party has plans to organise a mega rally at the Brigade Parade Ground in central Kolkata in January next year, which will also be addressed by the Prime Minister. The state committee insider further said that the locations of the proposed public meeting of the Prime Minister for the remaining months of the current calendar year will be planned in such a manner that major parts of both South Bengal and North Bengal could be covered. As per the plan, the meetings will be planned at locations at junctures of two or more districts. Already, the Prime Minister had addressed two public meetings in West Bengal so far this year, the first being in May at Alipurduar in North Bengal and the second being at the industrial township of Durgapur in West Burdwan district in South Bengal in July. From both meetings, the Prime Minister launched a scathing attack on the West Bengal government, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and the ruling Trinamool Congress on various issues like rampant corruption, rise in crime against women in the state, and frequent communal tension and riot-like situations in minority-dominated pockets in the state.

WB govt makes it mandatory to screen one Bengali film at prime time in multiplexes

The West Bengal government has made it mandatory to screen at least one Bengali film during prime hours in all cinema halls and multiplexes across the state. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. (AITC) 'In every cinema hall and in all screens of every multiplex across the state, 365 prime time shows / screenings of Bengali films shall mandatorily be held throughout the year with at least one Bengali show per day for all 365 days during the year,' said a notification issued by the state information and cultural affairs department on Wednesday. This comes at a time when chief minister Mamata Banerjee launched a Bhasha Andolan (linguist movement) amid allegations of Bengali-speaking migrant workers being detained in Bharatiya Janata Party-ruled (BJP) states and labelled as Bangladeshis. The notification also states that prime time shows shall mean shows held between 3 pm and 9 pm every day. 'Earlier, the slot between 12 noon and 9 pm was considered prime time. Now the slot between 3 pm and 9 pm will be considered as prime time. Earlier cinema halls and multiplexes were required to screen at least 120 Bengali films a year. Now we have made it mandatory to screen 365 films during prime-time slots,' Aroop Biswas, state youth services and sports minister, told media persons. The minister said that the move will help to give Bengali films a boost. 'Efforts are being made to stifle the Bengali language while some persons have stated that there is no such language named Bengali. The move will help to push Bengali films. Several fresh directors, producers and actors are coming up in the Bengali film industry. This move would help them,' said Biswas. A senior official said that the West Bengal Cinemas (Regulation of Public Exhibitions) Rules, 1956, will also be amended soon. 'This is a historic move by the Mamata Banerjee-administration. This will ensure there are at least 365 screenings of Bengali films across all theatres and multiplexes in the State, in a fitting response to those who criticised the declining number of Bengali film productions year on year,' Swarup Biswas, president of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, told the media on Wednesday.
