Hollyoaks confirm one-off film with real-life child exploitation survivors
Hollyoaks stars Isabelle Smith, Tamara Wall and Anya Lawrence have joined forces with survivors of child exploitation for a powerful one-off documentary titled Groomed and Exploited
Hollyoaks has collaborated with real-life survivors of child exploitation to create a unique one-off documentary.
Isabelle Smith, Tamara Wall and Anya Lawrence will feature in the special programme titled Groomed and Exploited, which is now accessible on Hollyoaks ' social media platforms.
The soap stars visit a group of 16 to 18 year olds at Liverpool-based college, LIPA, to discuss the importance of recognising the signs of exploitation.
In recent months, Hollyoaks has delved into criminal and sexual exploitation through the experiences of young characters Frankie Osborne (Isabelle Smith), Dillon Ray (Nathaniel Dass) and Anya Lawrence (Vicky Grant).
Earlier this year, best mates Frankie and Dillon found themselves in peril when they were targeted by Grace Black (Tamara Wall) and her gang, who offered them what seemed like a glamorous lifestyle.
The harsh reality was that they were drawn into a world of criminal and sexual exploitation, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Filmed on the Hollyoaks set, the documentary features Melanie, a survivor of sexual exploitation, discussing with Isabelle how her challenging upbringing made her susceptible to exploitation.
With Melanie's story interwoven with clips from the Hollyoaks storyline, the parallels with Frankie's experience are strikingly clear.
Melanie shared her harrowing experience, revealing: "Growing up in a dysfunctional home I witnessed a lot of violence... this led to my behaviour being very dysfunctional, getting into the wrong crowds of people, taking drugs and alcohol at a very young age."
Determined to help others, Melanie urges fellow survivors that "their past doesn't define their future and healing is possible", aiming to dismantle the shame and stigma that often comes with exploitation.
Emotional moments ensued as Tamara consoled Sabrina, who recounted the pain after her escape, saying: "I felt a lot of shame, embarrassment etc, and then I realised it's not my shame to hold, it's not my embarrassment."
Elsewhere, Causeway experts Iona and Chad, who consulted on the Hollyoaks plotline, highlighted their mission to educate individuals on recognising indicators of child exploitation.
Chad emphatically noted: "The more people who are able to spot the signs, who are able to raise concerns, the more people we prevent from being exploited in the future."
As part of the educational endeavour, students from LIPA viewed scenes from Hollyoaks and engaged in discussions about showcasing various aspects of child exploitation. If you require assistance or support, please visit channel4.com/support.

"Los Angeles needs us to channel our energy toward supporting our neighbours and demonstrating the values that make our city and county strong," her statement continued. The statement went on to clarify that the decision to indefinitely postpone the event was made by the museum's Board of Trustees, leadership and event partners, who "unanimously agreed" that pausing the event was "the appropriate response to current community circumstances." Chief Advancement Officer Paul Bessire added: "We will find a future moment to celebrate our work. Until then, we will channel our energy towards being welcoming spaces for learning and discovery for everyone who walks through our doors." The museum is expected to reschedule the event for a later date, and will continue with their daily operations and educational programs until the event is back in the calendar.

Merlin Cinemas Confirmed as New Operator for Rhyl Cinema
Independent national cinema operator Merlin Cinemas is set to take over the five-screen cinema in Rhyl town centre. The Cornwall-based independent operator has 21 other cinemas across the UK, including the Scala at Prestatyn. Denbighshire County Council said the company had a reputation for operating historic cinemas, as well as repurposed and modern buildings as cinemas, in communities often overlooked or underserved by larger cinema companies. Earlier this year, Merlin's founder and managing director, Geoff Greaves, was awarded an MBE for his outstanding contribution to the cinema industry – recognition of his 35 years spent championing the big screen in small towns. Following the closure of the cinema at the end of January, Denbighshire County Council has been working to attract an operator to the popular amenity on Rhyl's promenade. The announcement is subject to Merlin completing lease arrangements with Denbighshire County Council. Councillor Jason McLellan, Leader of Denbighshire County Council and Lead Member for Economic Growth & Tackling Deprivation, said: 'We're delighted to have Merlin on board to ensure that residents and visitors can enjoy a great day out in Rhyl. Once the lease is signed and Merlin have taken over, the cinema will play a pivotal role in the broader regeneration efforts in Rhyl town centre.' The council added that Merlin is working closely with the council to complete and sign the lease and with suppliers to assess the work needed behind the scenes before it can reopen. The firm is committed to improving the cinema, the council said, and enhancing the cinema experience for the local community. This may mean that the cinema reopens in phases. There will also be a new name, still to be announced. Geoff Greaves said: 'We're delighted to have been successful in our bid to operate this cinema. We're already familiar with the location because of our cinema four miles along the coast in Prestatyn, but when the opportunity came along, we jumped at the chance. We are doing everything we can to get the doors open so that the town has a cinema again. We really believe that seeing a film at the cinema on the big screen with family or friends is a very different experience to watching it at home; it is more memorable, more sociable and offers a sense of occasion.' Councillor McLellan said: 'The cinema itself is in a great location opposite Queen's Market Food Hall and event space, which will open on July 10, therefore this is a great opportunity to be part of an exciting time for Rhyl. As a council we're delighted to have found an operator to take over the site so quickly and we're looking forward to working with Merlin to secure the success of the facility. 'When it opens, I urge residents to support the cinema as well as other leisure facilities in the town – we need everyone to be backing our businesses to ensure their continued success.'

Rylan's mum begged Celebrity Gogglebox editors to cut out remarks
Rylan Clark and his mum Linda have been fan favourites on Celebrity Gogglebox since they joined the Channel 4 show in 2019 - but there are some conversations they've asked to be left on the cutting room floor Rylan Clark and his mum Linda have pleaded with the Celebrity Gogglebox editors to steer clear of airing certain discussions, worrying they might be "career-ending". The popular pair made their comeback on Channel 4's beloved series last week, and they're in good company with celebrities like Vernon Kay and Paddy McGuinness sharing the sofa. Previously speaking about their on-screen partnership, Rylan, 36, joked that the editors "must like" them, due to what viewers get to see of the pair on television, reports the Manchester Evening News. Rylan eagerly agreed: "We're lucky that the editors clearly like us, because the stuff they've had to cut out is career-ending." Linda chimed in with a further caution: "[I say] 'Don't you dare say what I just said'." A chuckling Rylan remarked on their editorial requests: "We're like, 'Yeah, can we not use that, please'". They've swiftly become one of the audience's top duos since joining Gogglebox in 2019, celebrated for their charming and witty rapport. Rylan shared how the show was an ideal chance for his mum to work with him; as she had declined other offers due to her Crohn's disease, which limits her outings. Chatting to Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary, Rylan explained: "Mum has got Crohn's [disease] as well, she doesn't really go out that much and things like that." He added: "But, when Gogglebox came along and they asked me to do it, I said, 'I would love to do it with my mum'." During their joint interview, he turned to his mum and said: "Because, you know, I think you came down to X Factor once didn't you, just one time. "So when this was the case, she lives five minutes from me, so I was like, 'Mum look it's at my house, you'll feel comfortable'." Linda added: "You feel like you're not on the telly, you just sit there." Rylan previously disclosed that out of "hundreds" of work opportunities that have come their way, a travel show was also on the cards. "It would be hilarious, but she's just not well enough to do it," he confessed to Daily Star. "Gogglebox is enough for us. She feels comfortable doing that show because we're just sat in my kitchen." According to the NHS, Crohn's disease is a chronic condition where part of the digestive system becomes inflamed. There's presently no cure, but treatments exist that can help prevent or manage the symptoms effectively. Although a travel show might be off the cards for Linda, audiences can still catch her appearances on Rylan's weekly BBC Radio 2 show and his YouTube series, Air Rylan.
