Preakness 2025 odds and picks: Best bet, favorites, expert predictions, post positions

The 150th running of the Preakness Stakes is Saturday with a 7:01 p.m. ET post time at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Kentucky Derby favorite Journalism ended up finishing second in that race to Sovereignty, who won't be running in the Preakness. That means the hope of a Triple Crown this year has been dashed.
Journalism is again the morning-line favorite at 8-5 in a nine-horse field, but those odds will likely shorten as we get closer to the race.

Yahoo Sports spoke with Lane Gold, host of Kentucky's Winners Circle, to preview the favorites and long shots in the race, as well as get a few bets he likes.
The favorite
No. 2 Journalism (8-5): "He lived up to his hype, basically, in the Kentucky Derby. He was beaten by a better horse in Sovereignty, but beat everyone else, so his price of 7-2 was certainly fair. He has a much easier task ahead of him now. He's not going to be as far back this time around. He could be the odds-on favorite without the Derby winner in the Preakness field. He's still one of the best 3-year-olds in the country and most of the other horses are unproven at this level. The rest of them have to prove they belong. Everyone's gonna have to step up their game to catch him."
Other horses to watch
No. 7 Sandman (4-1): "He ran a decent race at the Derby, but still finished 12.5 lengths back. He had a terrible trip on a wet track. It's hard to win the Derby or be competitive when you're next to last to begin the race. Basically, the race becomes a throw-away. The price here is probably going to be about the same for the Derby. He's the only other horse who has competed against this caliber of horses, but he's only won a third of his time in his career. If he winds up being 3-1 or 4-1, that's a short price in a race that may not favor a horse coming from way back — which is his MO. He's a challenge to take at that short price."

No. 8 Clever Again (5-1): "Another horse that's on the rise. Steve Asmussen gave him some time off (six weeks since he won at Oaklawn) and jockey Jose Ortiz jumped on this ride instead of Sandman. This horse is going to be your speed horse. I think he'll be at 6-1 or 7-1, so that's a fair price. He also has a lot of inexperience."
No. 1 Goal Oriented (6-1): "Bob Baffert is here with Goal Oriented, a horse that [has won both his races]. I don't think Baffert is coming there for the atmosphere. He obviously thinks the horse has some talent — but he only has two races under his belt. Baffert thought enough of him to give him a shot, though. Will he go to the lead is the big question because he's on the rail. That was his tactic in the Derby, and he was soundly beaten. You're asking the horse to do a lot, since it's his third race in about six weeks. He's here for a reason, but I'd let the odds dictate if he's worth a bet."
Best bet
"Journalism and Sovereignty were the two horses I liked going into the Derby, so there's no reason Journalism shouldn't have success here. Journalism has won four of six races. A strike against him is the price, but it's only a nine-horse field — not 12 or 14. If he has a clean trip, and you'd assume he will, he'll probably be leading at the top of the stretch and it will be up to the other horses to try and catch him. I'd probably bet him on top of Sandman and River Thames. I'd even throw in Gosger for a bomb on the outside. I'll take the experience here."

"Do you understand that you had more votes than Michael Jordan" - Vince Carter recalls beating MJ in All-Star votes in 2003

"Do you understand that you had more votes than Michael Jordan" - Vince Carter recalls beating MJ in All-Star votes in 2003 originally appeared on Basketball Network. It has been years since Vince Carter famously gave up his starting five spot to the one and only Michael Jordan during the 2003 All-Star game. To this day, Carter still couldn't believe that fans viewed him as better than MJ at one point in his career. Like most NBA stars, Carter was confident about his skills as a player. He knew he could fly, score, and dominate his matchups. However, he never once imagined that he would beat Jordan in All-Star votes. According to Vinsanity, the surreal feeling that stood out to him then was still vivid in his memory. In fact, it took a while until it finally sank in that he must have been a truly remarkable player to achieve such an overwhelming feat. "In Michael Jordan's last year, I was the leading [All-Star] vote-getter, and I was just like, Wow," Carter confided to Yahoo Sports in 2019. "We always knew he was going to start. I didn't have a shadow of a doubt. I gave up my position. That was crazy for me." "My friends and I talk about that. They're like, 'Do you understand that you had more votes than Michael Jordan in his last year?' And it's kind of hard to believe," he admitted. "That's one of the ones where I'm like, You know what? I must be OK." Topping the All-Star voting meant a lot to Carter For the better part of his illustrious and lengthy NBA career, Carter was widely recognized as an electrifying dunker. He famously won the 2000 NBA Slam Dunk contest, but deep down, VC considers topping the All-Star voting consecutive times a greater accomplishment. Apart from outvoting Jordan, Carter also beat his peers. It meant a lot for him as it speaks volumes about how the fans perceived his game. Moreover, it boosted Carter's confidence and motivated him even more to prove that he was indeed one of the best players of his time. "Winning the dunk contest gave me a world of confidence, but alongside that dunk contest, being the leading [All-Star] vote-getter for a few years in a row," he reflected. "The first time winning [the vote], I'm like, 'Man, I'm over Kobe Bryant, over Kevin Garnett, over T-Mac.' We're talking about a lot of players who could be the leading vote-getter and were staples in the All-Star game, and I was able to win three years in a row." Carter had to force MJ to take his spot in the starting lineup The old adage, "numbers don't lie," was what Carter's All-Star votes stated in a nutshell in '03. Clearly, he was the best small forward in the league, but it was enough for him that he knew it. For Vinsanity, it didn't make any sense to honor the voting and start but overstep a legend like Jordan. Knowing how classy MJ is, he refused to take Carter's spot as he believed his fellow UNC alum earned it. However, Carter wouldn't let him come off the bench in his final All-Star appearance. "So, right before the lineups I said, 'MJ, you are starting. Point blank period. You're starting.' And I told him I was going to walk to the back so he couldn't make me start because I wasn't going to be there," Carter once recalled. "We went back and forth. He goes out there' I felt like once they called his name he had to go." Truth be told, Carter's epic gesture in the '03 All-Star did not only reflect his respect for Jordan. It also proved that Carter is not just one of the greatest but one of the classiest players of all story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 18, 2025, where it first appeared.

BREAKING: SEC announces move to 9-game conference schedule

The SEC officially announced the league will be moving to nine conference games starting in the 2026 season. The move was initially reported earlier on Thursday by Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports and On3. The league felt more motivation to do so after the College Football Playoff committee announced a stronger approach to including strength of schedule in the conversation when selecting teams for the playoff. The SEC has played eight league games since it expanded back in 1992. The SEC now joins the Big 12 and the Big Ten with nine conference games, and the expectation is that the ACC will join them. In the nine-game schedule, each team will play three teams annually as permanent opponents and the remaining 12 teams on a rotating basis. Over four years, each team will play every team in the conference at least once every two years and will have home and home matchups with every other member over a four-year period. In the release from the SEC, the conference will still be required to schedule a game against a Power Four team or Notre Dame to maintain the competitive nature of the conference. 'The SEC has established itself as the leader in delivering the most compelling football schedule in college athletics,' SEC commissioner Sankey said in the release. 'Fans will see traditional rivalries preserved, new matchups more frequently, and a level of competition unmatched across the nation.' The Oklahoma Sooners' nonconference schedule includes a Power Four matchup each of the next five years with Michigan in 2026, SMU in 2027, Houston in 2028, and Nebraska in 2029 and 2030. The SEC is moving into a new era and the race to the conference championship game just got a whole lot more challenging. SEC moving closer to 9-game conference schedule per reports

The SEC may be on the verge of a schedule change, according to multiple outlets, and was first reported by Ross Dellenger from Yahoo Sports and On3. According to the reports, the SEC is closer to moving to a nine-game conference schedule. The SEC has been considering the move for some time, but has gone back and forth with their broadcast partner, ESPN, and the league's athletic directors and coaches on what it might mean for the conference. However, with new guidance coming from the College Football Playoff committee that will emphasize strength of schedule, the league believes the time is right to expand to a nine-game schedule. Greg Sankey said back at SEC media days that the schedule disparity between the league and the other Power Four conferences made him reluctant to fully pursue adding another conference game. Sankey said, "I don't believe there's anyone looking to swap their conference schedule and its opponents with the opponents played by the Southeastern Conference teams in our conference schedule, be it eight or nine. There is a rigor here that is unique." But if the playoff committee is going to take into account strength of schedule when determining the playoff teams in the future, then there's more money to be made from the networks with another nine SEC games to pitch to advertisers.
