Aamir Khan shed light on the benefits of knowing multiple languages, opens up on learning Marathi.
Aamir Khan has opened up about learning the Marathi language. Recently, the actor spoke to the news agency IANS, mentioning that he believes the more languages one knows, the better. Aamir revealed that even he learnt Marathi when he was 44 and today he can decently speak the language.
'I feel, whichever field you are in, the more languages you know, the more beneficial it will be. So, it is in your interest to know as many languages as you can. I am a little weak when it comes to languages. It takes me a lot of time to learn a new language," Aamir said.
'When I was around 44, I realised that I do not know the Marathi language – although Marathi is taught in school, I did not pay much attention. I felt that it was a matter of shame that I did not know my Rajyabhasha. Then, I hired a Marathi teacher and I learned Marathi from him. Now, I am able to speak decent Marathi," the actor added.
This comes at a time when a new debate over language is brewing in Maharashtra – speak Marathi if you live in the state. It all started in April this year when the Maharashtra government passed a decision to make Hindi a compulsory third language in schools. While the decision was rolled back, several incidents have been reported where alleged MNS workers got into a heated argument with people in Mumbai and Pune who refused to speak Marathi.
Previously, actress Renuka Shahane also expressed her opinion on the rising issues of the language conflict and said, 'If you are in a place for a very long time, it's a good thing to understand the local language, the local culture and be respectful more than anything else…It's not about the speaking of it, much more than the intention of wanting to, you know, respect it. I do not like people who do not feel the necessity to be accommodating of the local language and local culture."

Coolie advance booking collection: Rajinikanth breaks his own record; Kerala shows to begin at 6 am - Check day 1 prediction

These days, the box office is witnessing tremendous success, with films consistently becoming hits and makers earning huge profits. Amid this, two major films are set to release simultaneously on 14 August. On one side is Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR's action-packed film War 2 , and on the other is South superstar Rajinikanth's highly awaited film Coolie . Rajinikanth breaks his own record Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, has already earned Rs 20 crore (around 969K USD) through advance bookings in USA even before its release. With that, it surpassed Rajinikanth's own record held by Jailer where it collected USD 948K from its premiere shows when it was released in 2023. A special highlight of the film is that Aamir Khan and Rajinikanth will be seen together on screen for the first time. There is tremendous excitement surrounding the film, especially with advance bookings gaining momentum in international markets. The total advance booking tally for Coolie in North America has now crossed USD 1.12 million, making Coolie one of the biggest Indian premieres in the region ever, and one of the few Tamil films to achieve such numbers. Coolie vs War 2 Looking at the advance earnings of Coolie , it is clear that this film can give tough competition to War 2. War 2 is also being released on a large scale and its Tamil version has been sold for Rs 90 crore in the USA, which has already given a good profit to the makers. Coolie is expected to set the box office on fire as early shows in Kerala and Karnataka will begin at 6 am, while shows in Tamil Nadu will begin at 9 am. In the United Kingdom, the film has been censored without any cuts. The first show will begin at 12.30 am (5 am IST). What's the fee of Rajinikanth in Coolie? According to reports, the budget of Coolie is around Rs 375 crore. Rajinikanth has been paid Rs 150 crore for his role in the film, where he will be seen playing a character named Deva. Nagarjuna also plays a significant role and has reportedly been paid around Rs 30 crore. As for Aamir Khan, it is being said that he has agreed to work in the film without charging any fee, as a gesture of friendship towards Rajinikanth. Shruti Haasan will also be seen in a key role in the film.

Javed Akhtar reveals how he wanted to assist Guru Dutt after graduation: 'I was highly impressed'; R. Balki, Hansal Mehta and Sudhir Mishra too pay their homage

Javed Akhtar, an experienced poet, lyricist, and screenwriter, has disclosed that Guru Dutt had a significant impact on him. In fact, he even aided the late actor-director in his pursuit of his dream of becoming a director. Akhtar revealed that his dream of working with Dutt was still unfulfilled during a special session held in Mumbai on Wednesday night to honor the Hindi film icon as part of his centennial celebrations. Here's a closer look. What did Javed Akhtar say? At an event in Mumbai honoring Guru Dutt's centenary on Wednesday, August 6, the veteran screenwriter and lyricist, Javed Akhtar revealed that his long-held dream of working with the legendary filmmaker never came to fruition. Filmmakers Sudhir Mishra , Hansal Mehta, and R. Balki, as well as film critic and author Bhawanaa Sommaya, attended the session, all of whom shared Akhtar's admiration for Dutt. Javed Akhtar revealed that after graduating, he had a clear plan to join the film industry and assist Guru Dutt for two years before becoming a director himself. However, this dream was tragically cut short. 'After my graduation I'll go to the film industry and join Mr. Guru Dutt for a couple of years, and then I'll become a director. When you're 18 years old, things are simpler and easier, so that is what I had decided. It is so unfortunate that I came to Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1964, on October 4, and he passed away on October 10, so I could never ever see him," Akhtar continued. 'I had really thought that when I go (to Mumbai), somehow I'll manage (to work with Guru Dutt) because (poet-lyricist) Sahir (Ludhianvi) sahab was a good friend of Guru Dutt, and he had written songs for Pyaasa. I thought this connection will work. I had thought I'd assist him for a while, but it didn't work.' Akhtar, who co-wrote classic movies like 'Sholay,' 'Deewar,' 'Zanjeer,' and 'Don' with Salim Khan , expressed his admiration for Dutt's ability to convey complex narratives through visuals. "I was highly impressed by Guru Dutt in my college days;when I was 17 or 18 years old, I used to refuse to see films of certain superstars because I believed they were bad actors. It means I had some choice. Guru Dutt had a deep impression on me as a teenager,' he stated. "We had great directors like Mehboob (Khan) and Bimal Roy, but Guru Dutt was the first person who spoke through visuals. There were other directors who could give good performances, shoot at the right locations, create the right ambience in the film, and make well-written films, but talking through visuals is something that was taught to us by Guru Dutt,' Akhtar said. Sudhir Mishra talks about the late Guru Dutt The event ended with a special screening of Pyaasa, which was attended by members of Dutt's family, including actor Akshay Oberoi, filmmaker Anubhav Sinha, late actor Johnny Walker's son Nasir, and his granddaughters Gouri and Karuna Dutt. Mishra recalled that as a teenager, he and his grandmother had seen Dutt's film 'Saheb Bibi Aur Ghulam' at least six times. 'Guru Dutt is an experience; he could see him again and again. At the age of 22 he would mean something else, and today he would mean something else. I keep revisiting him. There's nothing in my life that I've done that is not influenced by him, and I haven't measured up to him, but I'm trying to,' Mishra remarked. "Every film that I've done, every shot that I've taken, every scene I've written, and song that I've tried to picture, I can't imagine it without Guru Dutt. He has taught us how to make films, how to see a scene, and how to take a blueprint, which is a script, and rewrite it in a film.' Hansal Mehta talks about the late Guru Dutt Mehta disclosed that he made a music video during his FTII years in Pune in the early 1990s, which he described as a "plagiarized" song sequence from Dutt's classic movie 'Kaagaz Ke Phool'. He openly referred to his work as a "vulgar replication" and stated that he hopes to honor the late director by creating a film about "heartbreak and love" in the future. He stated, "I grew up knowing about him through my closest friend, who was his nephew. I used to hear stories about his uncle. I discovered his (Dutt's) films much later; 'Pyaasa' is the first film I saw, and it left a lasting impression on me. More than the number of films I've made, I've had more heartbreaks and love.' "Guru Dutt has taught me that pitying oneself can be beautiful. I began to think of self-sympathy as a virtue and that I should celebrate it and that heartbreak is cinematic. I wish I could make a film that talks about heartbreak and love to pay tribute to the person who influenced me,' Mehta said. talks about Guru Dutt at the event Balki claimed that his 2022 film, 'Chup: Revenge of the Artist,' which portrayed the suffering of an artist who receives "wrong criticism," was based on Dutt. 'We live in an era where resilience is celebrated more than sensitivity, and sensitivity with a little bit of luck can become luck, and if not supported by luck, goes down. As the most sensitive artist, we love to celebrate a person who has fallen and come up. Guru Dutt, to me, is an epitome of sensitivity,' he continued. "He inspires me to remember sensitivity; it is important to feel vulnerable and not be understood by many people—you just go on. Today, the pressure is more on artists. The more I watch his films, I look at the vulnerability of the filmmaker; I never look at the craft." More about the late Guru Dutt Some of Dutt's most famous films, including 'Pyaasa' (1957), 'Aar Paar' (1954), 'Chaudhvin Ka Chand' (1960), 'Mr & Mrs 55' (1955), 'Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam' (1962), and 'Baaz' (1953), will be shown throughout India from August 8 to 14 as part of the retrospective in honor of his centennial. The National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), the National Film Archive of India (NFAI), and Ultra Media and Entertainment Group, the owners of the film rights, have all taken part in the restoration of these titles.

Panel to be set up to ensure more screens for Marathi films: Shelar

Mumbai, Aug 7 (PTI) To ensure that more theatres are made available for Marathi films, Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar on Thursday directed the formation of a joint committee comprising representatives of relevant departments to examine the challenges faced by single-screen cinemas. Several organisations, along with associations of theatre owners and operators, artists and filmmakers had submitted representations to Shelar urging the government to take immediate steps, whether through financial aid, subsidies or other forms of support to revive single screen cinemas. They claimed the state of single-screen cinemas in Maharashtra is deeply concerning. Responding to these concerns, Minister Shelar convened a high-level meeting on Thursday with officials from the Department of Cultural Affairs, Goregaon Film City, and other relevant departments. Office-bearers of the Cinema Owners' Association were also present. During the meeting, the minister suggested forming a joint committee comprising the Urban Development, Home, Revenue, Finance and Cultural Affairs departments, along with experts from the field. This committee will conduct a detailed study and submit its report within two months, he said. He also directed the committee to explore whether any government incentive schemes can be introduced for the approximately 300 single-screen cinemas that are either currently operational or closed, provided they commit to screening Marathi films as part of its mandate. Meanwhile, a meeting was also held regarding the proposed theatre in Goregaon in Mumbai. Actor Sunil Barve and local citizens have strongly advocated for the establishment of this theatre, even launching a signature campaign in support. Minister Shelar reviewed the matter in the presence of municipal officials, concerned artists and local MLA Vidya Thakur. He instructed that a comprehensive report covering available land and the proposed building structure, considering the views of the artists, be submitted within the next 15 days. Further, he emphasized that the work should commence at the earliest. PTI MR BNM view comments First Published: August 07, 2025, 21:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
