Where is Orlando Pirates legend Benedict Vilakazi now?

Orlando Pirates fans have fond memories of Benedict Vilakazi.
Small, fast and always on the scoresheet, Vilakazi, otherwise known as 'Tso' or, more fittingly, 'Little Napoleon', was as lethal as they came, scoring a club-best fifty-two goals for the Buccaneers – all while playing in midfield.
The boy from Soweto made it big in his hometown. Scandals came his way, but they never tarnished his legendary status—he was one of the finest talents to grace the PSL.
Shortly after retiring in 2015, Vilakazi took to television and quickly became a respected football analyst, featuring especially on Nkululeko Nkewu's iDiski TV podcast.
In 2021, the former Mamelodi Sundowns maestro diverted his attention to coaching, attending a FIFA course in Botswana before taking the reins at National Division side Orange Vaal Professionals.
Now, he finds himself at the Prestige Football Development Academy, where he hones his coaching skills in hopes of returning to the PSL and teaching the next generation his silky, riveting tricks.
'It's the academy that I have known since 2014, if I remember well,' said Orlando Pirates' leading scorer.
'He [Ibrahim Njoya] has asked me to come on board [Prestige Football Development], and after a meeting with him and the CEO, it was decided that I should join. How the academy functions and their objectives and everything that we do were outlined, and I was happy to get involved,' Vilakazi added.
'How the academy functions and their objectives and everything they do were outlined, and I was happy to get involved. I believe that I have made a good decision by getting involved with them,
'They have an agreement with Mainz, the club from Germany that whenever there are good players who are showing potential here at home, they will be sent to Germany for opportunities and chance to be signed,
'We know that in South Africa it is not always easy for things to happen for aspiring footballers, and I am just happy to be involved in such a project, and I will be working towards helping them get closer to realising their dreams and I am hoping that when opportunities do come their way they will grab them with both hands,' the Orlando Pirates great concluded.

Kaizer Chiefs set to seal first signing of the window!

Kaizer Chiefs are looking to undergo a squad rebuild ahead of the next season, after a disappointing previous campaign. Although they won the Nedbank Cup, Chiefs still failed to finish the season in the top eight positions. This made it their second time in a row, under a second coach that they failed to qualify for the MTN8. With that, Chiefs are expected to make some big and telling changes to their playing personnel. This in an effort to ensure that they don't find themselves in a similar situation again next season. It is no secret that they are looking to bolster their attack going into next season. But that is just one department, as they are also intent on adding strength and depth to their defence. One position that is reportedly earmarked for that is the left-back berth. As it stands, Chiefs have Bradley Cross, Happy Mashiane, Edmilson Dove and Bongani Sam playing there. Sam did not play a single minute for Chiefs since joining from arch rivals Orlando Pirates last season. He is rumoured to be on his way out. Mashiane has continued to be a bit part player and also could leave. There is also uncertainty over the future of Dove, with his deal up at the end of the month. So with possibly three left-backs on the way out, at least two new ones would be needed. Earlier in the week, this publication reported that Chiefs were in negotiations to sign Aphiwe Baliti from SuperSport United. Now according to Micky Jnr, the club are set to wrap that deal up in time for him to make it to their preseason tour to the Netherlands. 'Aphiwe Baliti will be part of Kaizer Chiefs' squad to the Netherlands for pre-season. The agent has confirmed that talks are close to being finalized. 23-year-old Defender (LB) SuperSport United Played 18 games in the 2024/25 season' posted Micky Jnr on his official 'X' account. Chiefs fans, would you be excited for Baliti to be your first signing of the transfer window? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. Or by emailing info@ or sending a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Sibisi grateful for Broos' support as he prepares to captain Bafana

Nkosinathi Sibisi has embraced his leadership role with Bafana Bafana, thanking coach Hugo Broos for his faith ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Mozambique. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix Bafana Bafana stand-in captain Nkosinathi Sibisi is grateful to coach Hugo Broos for standing by him during times of scrutiny regarding his national team call-ups. Sibisi has been one of the ever-present players in the national team set-up since Broos took the reins more than four years ago. However, his selections were not always based on form, as he was often in and out of the Orlando Pirates defensive unit due to injuries, poor form and suspensions. Broos admitted that it was not easy to continue selecting Sibisi when he was not playing regularly, but believed his presence and natural skillset remained valuable to the team. Fortunately for the Belgian coach, his faith has recently been rewarded. Sibisi featured prominently for Pirates this past season, missing only three Premiership matches. Next Stay Close ✕ As a result, Broos named him one of the temporary captains for the current international window, alongside Fawaaz Basadien, stepping in for regular captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Basadien captained the team in the first international friendly against Tanzania at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane last Friday, which ended in a goalless draw. Sibisi, meanwhile, is set to lead the side against Mozambique in another friendly at the same venue on Tuesday at 7.30pm, and he is thankful to Broos for his continued belief. 'It's a privilege and an honour for me,' said Sibisi, who is also vice-captain at Pirates. 'I'd like to thank the coach for showing confidence in me. We have been together since the very first camp he started. 'There were question marks at times whenever I was here. So, to be able to lead the team tomorrow (tonight) will be a huge honour for me.' Khulumani Ndamane shares the emotions he felt on Friday when he made his Bafana Bafana debut against Tanzania and also won Man of the Match.#BafanaPride@SABC_Sport — Bafana Bafana (@BafanaBafana) June 8, 2025 Sibisi has formed a solid partnership with youngster Mbekezeli Mbokazi at centre-back for Pirates after the latter was promoted to the senior team by coach José Riveiro. That partnership is set to continue at international level, as Broos confirmed in a pre-match press conference that the duo could start together against the Mambas. 'I've played with Mbokazi at club level, so it won't be any different in the national team,' Sibisi said. 'He's a very humble boy, and he takes instructions well. So, it's very easy for me to play alongside him. I don't think it'll be a big adjustment for him. As the coach has mentioned, it might be a perfect choice for me to partner him – to give him guidance and the confidence to take his chance.' Including Sibisi and Mbokazi, there are six other Pirates players in the current Bafana squad, making up the largest contingent from any club. However, the 23-member squad selected for the two friendlies has gelled well, with no signs of division along club lines. 'The camaraderie is key. I think everyone is playing their part – regardless of whether it's guys from Pirates or Stellies. When we come together, we are representing Bafana,' Sibisi said. 'We have to put that aside and play as one. We know that if we play as one, there's a better chance of us winning the game ahead of us.' Sibisi is also in camp with some of the defenders – Basadien and Thabo Moloisane (both from Stellenbosch) – who could be his rivals for the PSL Defender of the Season award. 'The guys you've mentioned are really top, top players. Fawaaz and Thabo have been doing well for Stellenbosch,' Sibisi said. 'It's always nice when we meet. There's no sort of competition between us. We just try to do the best we can for our clubs and hope that is rewarded. 'As for the Defender of the Season award, we'll just let God take His way. If it is meant to be, then it will be. If not, we will just continue.'

Orlando Pirates join the chase for Nigerian goal machine

Orlando Pirates have entered the race to sign Nigerian striker Etiosa Ighodaro, joining a growing list of top clubs eager to secure his signature ahead of the new season. With Kaizer Chiefs, AmaZulu FC, and Sekhukhune United all circling, the Buccaneers now look set to shake up the transfer market with their interest in the Mamelodi Sundowns forward. Ighodaro, who impressed during his loan spell at AmaZulu FC last season, has become one of the most sought-after talents in South African football. The powerful frontman featured in nearly every PSL fixture for Usuthu, turning heads with his consistent performances and goal-scoring threat. 'There are local teams apart from Kaizer Chiefs who are also interested in him. I can tell you that AmaZulu FC have already contacted Sundowns and the player's representatives as they want to keep him (after the loan). And there is Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United. It's believed that they have both been in touch concerning Ighodaro. It's a matter of who comes up with the best offer,' a source close to the situation confirmed. While the Soweto giants are keen to bolster their attacking options. They face fierce competition not just from domestic rivals but from international clubs too. Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca and Russian Premier League side FC Baltika have also expressed concrete interest in landing the striker. 'The thing is that there is interest in Russia and Morocco and it is becoming difficult to keep him locally. But it's believed that Sekhukhune United are preparing to sign him as a replacement for Andy Boyeli. Who is wanted by Pyramids FC in Egypt. So as I have said, let's wait and see as there are many other factors around his move from Sundowns. But interest in him keeps on growing,' the source added. With the transfer window heating up, Orlando Pirates must act swiftly and decisively if they want to beat Chiefs, AmaZulu, and Sekhukhune to the punch.
