Haridwar Stampede: Route closure 30 mins earlier prevented bigger tragedy, says police official

If the staircase route leading to the Mansa Devi temple was not closed half an hour before the stampede on Sunday, the scale of the tragedy would have been even bigger, a police official said.Devotees who were already on the staircase route to the popular hilltop temple in Haridwar before the route could be shut, however, encountered a stampede that killed six people and left 28 injured, after a rumour of an electric current leak triggered panic."In view of the heavy crowd, people were stopped from going on the staircase route half an hour before the incident in the morning. If the staircase route had not been closed, the tragedy could have been bigger," Haridwar Kotwali in-charge Ritesh Shah said.Search operation continued to find any victims hidden among the bushes and a ditch along the route where the stampede occurred. The roads and bushes on the surrounding hills were being scoured by the SDRF personnel as a precautionary measure, he said.The administration fears that some people might have fallen into the ditch and could be hidden by the bushes after the stampede.The road leading to the temple has been closed for the time being. The temple, which was closed following the stampede reopened at 4 pm, Shah said.The road where the stampede occurred is the oldest route to the temple meant for pedestrians. One has to climb about 700 steps to reach the temple that sits at a height of more than 500 feet.After the stampede, a rescue operation was carried out and after all the injured and the dead were taken to the hospital, and the road towards the hill was covered with tarpaulins, the official said.Only one-way traffic is allowed on the road, which comes under Raja Ji National Park, when the crowd increases, said the park's warden, Ajay Kumar. He said the rush of devotees suddenly increased on Sunday causing the stampede.Survivors and locals blamed excess crowd and the narrow passage for the stampede.Locals also said huge crowd should have been expected in the month of Sawan on a Sunday and if the administration had been more cautious, the tragedy could have been avoided.A magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident. The Haridwar ADM will conduct the probe and submit his report within 15 days with recommendations on how to prevent recurrence of such incidents in future, Haridwar District Magistrate Mayur Dikshit said.The real cause of the stampede will be known only after the probe report comes, officials said.

'I feel that I have been abandoned... I've been told that in Israel, the government cares for prisoners and cares for anyone imprisoned by the enemy. I feel that I have been abandoned by you and this government,' he said. 3 held for robbing fruit seller at knifepoint
Chandigarh: Three miscreants have been arrested for robbing a fruit seller of his purse containing cash and other documents at knifepoint in Ramdarbar. The police had filed a case based on the statement of the victim. All accused are residents of Ramdarbar, Chandigarh. In his complaint to the police, Lalu Chauhan, a resident of Phase-2, Ramdarbar, stated that he is a fruit seller, and on July 29, 2025, at about 11 PM, he and his brother Mukul were going home from Kisan Mandi. When they reached near Cactus Park in Ramdarbar, three persons approached them from the front and started assaulting them. These three accused were calling each other by their names, and one of the accused, Sawan, took out a knife and pointed it at Lalu's neck. Habru held his hands, and Shubham took out his purse containing cash around 12,000, an Aadhar card, and other documents, and fled from the spot. Lalu informed the police about the incident, and officers from the Sector-31 police station reached the spot. Police recorded the statements of the victims and started an investigation. During the course of the investigation, police arrested all three accused and claimed to have recovered the snatched documents, ATM card, and one knife from the possession of the accused. Police said all the accused have a criminal record. The accused Sawan is already booked in five cases of rioting, attempted murder, robbery, and assault, while the accused Shubham was booked in three cases of burglary, POCSO Act, and theft. Teen swept away in Kukrail, body found
Lucknow: The body of 14-year-old Rizwan Ahmad, who went missing on Saturday after being swept away in the Kukrail river near Rahimnagar, was found following a seven-hour-long search operation. The rescue mission was led by Mahanagar police station house officer (SHO) Akhilesh Mishra, who, along with two dedicated teams. "We began the operation with the SDRF team, and although hope was fading by evening, we continued to comb the river," Mishra said. Rizwan and his friend Sahil, also 14, had gone to collect floating garbage from the river. However, a sudden rise in the water level due to rainfall caused Rizwan to be swept away by the current. Sahil managed to swim to safety. The incident took place around 3pm near a Jal Nigam barrel. After the incident, locals informed the authorities. Kismat Ali, 45, Rizwan's father, works as a garbage collector, while his two brothers, Zainul, 19, and Raju, 18, are sweepers. Their mother, Bashirun Nisa, 40, is a house help. Municipal commissioner Gaurav Kumar visited the spot and directed officials to begin immediate rescue efforts. Teams from Jal Nigam, SDRF, local police and municipal corporation began a search operation. According to the municipal corporation, a preliminary inquiry shows that the children entered the water on their own. The barrel and the drain are part of the Jal Nigam infrastructure, and water flow increases in this area after rainfall. There was no immediate evidence of structural fault or unattended hazard. Officials said the boy drowned near the meeting of the river and the Jal Nigam's outlet, a zone where water speed increases after rain. Mayor Sushma Kharakwal reached the spot and appealed to the parents and residents to prevent children from going near open drains, barrels, or river outlets, especially after rainfall. She said that instructions will be reviewed regarding access to such areas during the rainy season.
