
Japan Just Broke the Internet Speed Record. How Fast Is It? You Could Download all of Netflix in Under a Minute
That's the dream scientists at Japan's National Institute of Information and Communications Technology have made a reality, achieving a world record in data transmission speed of 1.02 Petabits per second over 1,123 miles -- roughly the distance between Miami and Cleveland.
To put that in perspective, we usually measure internet speed in Megabits per second (Mbps). A Petabit is equal to a billion Megabits, which means the speed achieved by the NICT researchers would measure out to 1,020,000,000Mbps -- more than 3.5 million times faster than the average internet speed in the US right now.
Why would you need to transmit data that quickly? It might seem like a novelty record akin to hooking up 444 gaming consoles to one TV, but the breakthrough speeds have legitimate real-world implications.
'The result represents a major step forward in developing scalable, high-capacity networks and addressing the world's growing demand for data,' the NICT report states.
Locating local internet providers
That's because the researchers used fiber-optic cables compatible with existing infrastructure. For the test, they used a 19-core optical fiber with a standard cladding diameter of 0.125mm -- the same thickness currently used in networks worldwide.

This 19-core optical fiber can use 19 different light paths to transmit data in the same space usually taken up by one. That's how you can get such a massive increase in capacity without entirely overhauling the 870,000 miles of undersea cables that run the internet.
We may need that increase in speed sooner than we think, too. A well-known rule in the networking world called Nielsen's law states that a high-end internet user's connection speed grows by roughly 50% each year, doubling every 21 months -- an observation that has held true since 1983. I'd say a high-end internet user has one-gig speeds right now; in a decade, it's not hard to imagine that being 10Gbps. To keep up with growing demand like that, we'll need a lot more records to be broken.

McDonald's announces plans to strengthen AI investments by 2027
McDonald's plans to 'double down' on its artificial intelligence investments by 2027 and is betting on India to be a key hub for data governance, engineering and platform architecture, a senior executive said on Friday. The fast-food giant, which entered India in 1996, operates hundreds of restaurants across the country and recently set up a global office in the southern city of Hyderabad, with an aim to make it the largest outside the United States. 'We're still in the early stages, so it's hard to pin down the exact investment,' McDonald's head of Global Business Services operations, Deshant Kaila, said in an interview on the sidelines of an event in Hyderabad. McDonald's is using AI to verify orders at 400 restaurants to pre-empt errors before handing them over to customers, and expects to roll this out to 40,000 locations globally by 2027, Durga Prakash, head of technology (global offices), said. The fast-food giant is also using AI tools to forecast sales, decide on pricing and assess product performance and is building a personalised app, which would work across countries, according to Kaila. He said the India push will centre on building its AI team, but added that spending will lean more toward technology and tools, not headcount. The company is in talks to set up a global office in Poland, just like the ones in India and Mexico, according to Durga Prakash. Earlier this year, the southern Indian state of Telangana said that McDonald's would launch a global capability center, employing 2,000 people in Hyderabad. India's global capability centers, once low-cost outsourcing hubs for global corporations, have evolved to support their parent organisations in domains ranging from operations and finance to research and development.
