Godswill Akpabio: Nigeria's senate president denies harassment claims
One of Nigeria's most senior politicians, Godswill Akpabio, has denied allegations of sexual harassment brought against him by a fellow senator.Senate President Akpabio told Wednesday's session that he had been raised very well by his late mother and had never harassed any woman.In an interview with Arise Television on Friday, senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Akpabio had made inappropriate advances towards her during a visit to his residence in southern Akwa Ibom state, on 8 December 2023.She said that Akpabio had taken her by the hand, led her around his house, and made sexual advances towards her while her husband walked behind them, talking on his phone.
She further alleged that Akpabio had, on a separate occasion, insinuated that she should "take care of him" if she wanted her motions to receive favourable consideration in the senate.The senator alleged that he was behaving like a university lecturer who consistently failed his student who had refused to sleep with him.But this was denied by Akpabio."At no time did I ever harass any woman. I was raised very well by my late single mother, and I have always upheld respect for women. I was even awarded the most gender-friendly governor in Nigeria," he noted.The issue has generated huge debate in Nigeria with many calling for an independent investigation.In a social media post, Akpabio's predecessor, and political rival, Bukola Saraki said the issues raised were too serious to be simply brushed aside.Earlier on Wednesday, two groups of protesters gathered at the assembly ground in the capital, Abuja - one backing Akpabio and the other in support of his colleague, chanting ''Akpabio must go.''Senator Uduaghan used Wednesday's plenary session to submit a formal petition calling for an investigation into Akpabio's behaviour.As the president, Akpabio permitted Uduaghan to proceed, directing that her petition be referred to the senate committee on the code of conduct, ethics, and public petitions.Before becoming senate president less than two years ago, Akpabio was governor of the oil-rich Akwa Ibom state for eight years and also minister of Niger Delta affairs under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The riots began on Monday after two teenage boys appeared in court accused of attempted rape. They had confirmed their names and ages through a Romanian interpreter and denied the charges against them. By Monday afternoon, a social media post advertising a planned protest at 7.30pm that evening had been widely circulated and despite it being planned as peaceful, violent attacks were launched on places known to house migrants. Since then there have been three nights of violence and vandalism with people reportedly afraid to leave their homes, multiple arrests and dozens of police officers injured. On Wednesday masked youths attacked Larne Leisure Centre by smashing windows and setting fires. They are believed to have targeted the building after social media posts had suggested that those moved out of Ballymena homes were being housed there. Emergency services created blockades with vehicles and a water cannon was also used in an effort to disperse the crowds that gathered close to Clonavon Terrace. "It has now been confirmed to us by the PSNI and Council that all these individuals are in the care of the Housing Executive and have been moved out of Larne. "Protesting is of course a legitimate right but violence is not and I would encourage everyone to remain peaceful." The Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has condemned the 'mindless attacks which has been described by senior police officers as "racist thuggery." A consultation has been published by Cleland Community Council asking locals for their opinions on a proposed new play area in Parkside. Options include a new bike track of Multi Use Games Area (MUGA). In a statement on their Facebook page, Cleland Community Council said: 'We are working closely with North Lanarkshire Council's Community Partnership Team to develop a new proposal for a possible facility for children and young people in Parkside. 'We want to hear from you on your preference of which of these two possible facilities children and young people would want to see and would use more regularly. 'We are working to access funding through the council's Local Development Programme fund to hopefully secure the budget to create a proposal plan leading to this project.' There are also in-person consultations to be held. These will be on Tuesday, June 17, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm in Cleland Community Centre and on Wednesday, June 18, from 10am to 11.30am in Cleland Library. The issue of better play equipment for Parkside kids has been an issue for residents for several years. Back in 2022, over 700 people signed a petition demanding an upgrade to play facilities. Speaking at that time, concerned resident Lizann Carroll said: 'We have been promised facilities since even before Covid, but we are hoping the council can look at this again and bring the proposals forward. 'The kids have got nothing up here and that's just not good enough.' Progressive Change Murdostoun councillor Cameron McManus is encouraging locals to complete the survey. He said: 'This is welcome news as many have been campaigning for better play facilities in Parkside long before Covid. 'It is important people express their views. Whether it's a bike track of a Multi Use Games Area (MUGA), people have to have their say. 'The more people that complete the survey then we will have a much better idea of exactly what local people are looking for.' Labour's Murdostoun councillor Louise Roarty added: 'I'm delighted this consultation has been developed to give the people of Parkside a voice to express what they consider to be the best options for the children and the community.'
