Former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard discusses last six months while at ESPYs

USA Today2 days ago
To say that it's been a memorable and eventful last six months for former Ohio State quarterback Will Howard would be an understatement. Not only did he realize a couple of childhood dreams by winning a College Football Playoff national championship and by being selected in the NFL draft, but he also appeared on the red carpet at the ESPYs because the Buckeyes were nominated for "Team of the Year."
And while OSU didn't win that award, he still got to rub elbows with American sports' royalty and experience all that comes from being a part of the festivities. One other thing Howard has been able to do is learn from future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers after he was signed to lead the Steelers this coming year.
Howard -- all decked out in his best -- took some time while at the ESPYs to talk about those things and more while on the red carpet ahead of sitting in the audience in person to watch the annual sports awards show. As he always is, Howard was gracious and engaging in talking about a six-month whirlwind that will undoubtedly be unlike any other in his life. He reflected on his transfer to Ohio State, making a run to the national championship, and what it means to be mentored by Rodgers. You can catch all of his comments below, thanks to the ESPN College Football "X" account.
It's unlikely that Howard will get much time under center in Pittsburgh this season, but as Rodgers moves on, if he can learn and make the most of the opportunity he has, maybe we can see him doing some of the same things he did for Ohio State for the Steelers in the near future. I wouldn't bet against him at this point.

Former BYU QB Jake Retzlaff reportedly to transfer to Tulane

Six weeks before Week 1 of the 2025 college football season, Jake Retzlaff has found a new home. The former BYU quarterback has committed to Tulane, according to a report from ESPN on July 21. The move comes 10 days after Retzlaff left BYU rather than sit through a planned seven-game suspension for a violation of the school's honor code, which prohibits premarital sex. REQUIRED READING: Big Ten's rigged College Football Playoff plan shut down by SEC Retzlaff had been accused in a lawsuit in May of raping a woman in 2023. Retzlaff denied the allegation and the lawsuit was dismissed on June 30, with the parties jointly agreeing to dismiss with prejudice. Given the severity of the allegations Retzlaff faced, Tulane spent more than a week doing background on the transfer quarterback and had the school's Title IX office review the move, according to ESPN. The report added that Retzlaff will join the Green Wave as a walk-on, as he was unable to enter the NCAA transfer portal given when he left BYU. Retzlaff threw for 2,947 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last season and ran for 417 yards and six touchdowns. He helped lead the Cougars to an 11-2 record and a No. 14 ranking in the final US LBM Coaches Poll. At Tulane, he'll aim to win the starting job vacated by Darian Mensah, who transferred to Duke after leading the Green Wave to the American Athletic Conference championship game last season. Retzlaff is one of four transfer quarterbacks on the roster, joining Brendan Sullivan (Iowa), Kadin Semonza (Ball State) and Donovan Leary (Illinois). On3 Sports reported that Retzlaff has not been promised the starting job. Coach Jon Sumrall had originally brought in TJ Finley from Western Kentucky, but the well-traveled quarterback entered the transfer portal in April after he was arrested after police linked the license plate of a truck he was driving to a stolen car in Atlanta (Finley's attorneys claimed he was victim of a scam after buying a used truck through a social media marketplace). After going 9-5 in Sumrall's first season, Tulane is expected to be one of the best teams this season outside the power conference level, which could put it in contention for a designated spot in the College Football Playoff.

This QB stat casts doubt on Notre Dame football's chances to win a title this fall

The quarterback position is the most important in position in football, and for Notre Dame this fall, they'll be breaking in a new starter. Either CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey will take over the Irish offense now that Riley Leonard has moved onto the NFL, and in a state shared by On3's J.D. Pickell, it looks like its going to be an uphill battle for Notre Dame to win the national championship. The former linebacker noted that there has been only one instance for a first-year starting quarterback winning the title over the last five years, and that was with Mac Jones and Alabama in 2020. He goes on to mention that five of the top six betting favorites to win a title this fall, don't have a returning starter. While Pickell doesn't name which teams they are, it's pretty easy to deduce which ones they are: Texas, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, Alabama and Oregon. Only Penn State returns its starter from last year, and if you are like me, Drew Allar just doesn't do it for me, as evident by what Notre Dame did to the Nittany Lions in last years College Football Playoff. Every one of those other teams, along with the Irish will be breaking in a new starting quarterback. Unfortunately, there is one dark-horse that stands out, that wasn't included in that top group and its Clemson. They have a championship winning head coach, a three-year starter at quarterback returning, and a top defense to go along with it. While Notre Dame might not have the experience at quarterback, they do all over the rest of the field. Hopefully, that trumps breaking in a brand new starter behind center for the Irish and they can end a long title drought. He has now signed his contract with the Orioles. Dzierwa's deal was slated as a $1,497,500 deal which was $100,600 under slot value, allowing the Orioles some flexibility with other prospects in their draft class.
