Ayr United in mourning as tributes paid to iconic defender Rikki Fleming
Ayr United are mourning the loss of another great with the death of iconic defender Rikki Fleming at the age of 78.
Ice cool Rikki, who began his career with Rangers, spent 10 years at Somerset Park after being signed by Ally MacLeod from Kilwinning Rangers in November 1968.
He went on to make more than 350 appearances as an Honest Man and was part of the team widely acknowledged as one of Ayr's greatest ever: Stewart, Malone, Murphy, Fleming, Quinn, Mitchell, Young, Ferguson, Ingram, McCulloch, Rough.
Rikki was a standout in the team which beat Rangers 2-1 in September 1969 before a record crowd of 25,225, a game which is etched in the memory of those privileged to be there.
In March 1974, he played for the Scottish League against the Football League at Maine Road.
He won the Ayr Supporters' Association player of the year award that season for the second time and was revered as a fans' favourite.
Rikki played a key part as Ayr qualified for the inaugural Premier Division in 1975 where they held their own for three seasons.
He was sold to Hibs for £10,000 in 1978 for a £10,000 transfer fee before finishing his senior career with Berwick Rangers.
Former skipper and assistant manager Davie Wells recalled: 'Rikki was totally dedicated, always unflappable and was so good in the air.
"He was a wonderful player and used to share a few laughs with George 'Dandy' McLean, who like him had played for Rangers before joining Ayr.'
Striker Neil Hood was a close pal of Rikki both on and off the park, spending foreign holidays with him when they were Somerset teammates.
He said: 'He was a super guy and a fantastic footballer. It was somewhat ironic that he went on to become a taxi server because when he was at Ayr he couldn't drive and relied on public transport and teammates for lifts.
'We used to go to Glasgow dance halls together and his famous chat-up line was always the same. I'm Rikki, ex-Rangers and now a superstar with Ayr United.'
Former Ayrshire Post Sports Editor Mike Wilson reckons Rikki was one of the classiest players to pull on the black and white.
He said: 'Rikki was a star in a golden era for Ayr in the late 60s and 70s under Ally MacLeod who led them into the Premier Division.
'He formed a formidable partnership with the hard as nails Stan Quinn and they were the perfect foil for each other. Rikki was always unruffled no matter the opponent, a real class act who served the club well for 10 years.'
Rikki and teammate Dick Malone were inducted into the Ayr Hall of Fame in 2010.
Rikki, who had progressed dementia, had spent the last six months of his life in a care home before passing away.

Brugge missed out on a second successive league title under Hayen last term, finishing runners-up behind Union Saint-Gilloise. They did, however, win the Belgian Cup with a 2-1 victory over Anderlecht in the final. They also reached the last 16 of the Champions League after finishing in the last qualifying place (24th) in the league phase with 11 points from eight fixtures. They claimed wins over Sturm Graz, Aston Villa and Sporting CP and held Celtic to a 1-1 draw at Parkhead as well as claiming a point from Juventus on home soil. They secured a 5-2 aggregate win over Atalanta in the knockout play-off round before being eliminated by Aston Villa 6-1 on aggregate in the last 16. How have Brugge started the current season? Brugge have already won their first silverware of the campaign having lifted the Belgian Super Cup, a match played annually in pre-season between the league champions and Belgian Cup winners, with a 2-1 victory over Union Saint-Gilloise. They are three matches into their 2025-26 league campaign and sit sixth in the standings having collected six points with two home victories over Genk and Cercle Brugge either side of an away defeat to Mechelen. They also emerged with a 4-2 aggregate victory from their Champions League third qualifying round tie against RB Salzburg, winning the away leg 1-0 and the home leg 3-2. Rangers claimed a 1-1 draw in Belgium thanks to a Pieter Huistra equaliser while Rangers won the return fixture at Ibrox 2-1 thanks to goals from Ian Durrant and Scott Nisbet despite a first-half red card to Mark Hatelely. The most recent meeting between the sides took place only last month - July 6 - when they battled out a 2-2 draw at Ibrox in a pre-season friendly. Rangers struggled early on and were two goals down inside 13 minutes but a superb strike from Mohamed Diomande early in the second half gave them a foothold before Findlay Curtis levelled in the 89th minute. Belgian international Hans Vanaken is a major goal threat from midfield while Greece striker Christos Tzolis was top scorer last season with 21 goals. Portugal Under-21 international winger Carlos Forbs is also one to watch after completing a €6million summer move from Ajax while big things are expected of defensive midfielder Aleksandar Stanković - the son of Serbia legend Dejan Stanković - following his €10m arrival from Inter Milan. The defence will be marshalled by 32-year-old club stalwart Brandon Mechele, who is entering his 14th season with Brugge, while Ecuador centre-back Joel Ordóñez, the 21-year-old rising star, has been linked with Liverpool, Aston Villa and Tottenham. Harry Redknapp tells Hearts and Hibs they're onto winners with new investment
The experienced former Tottenham and West Ham boss has been talking Hearts plus Hibs Sign up to our Hearts newsletter Sign up Thank you for signing up! Did you know with a Digital Subscription to Edinburgh News, you can get unlimited access to the website including our premium content, as well as benefiting from fewer ads, loyalty rewards and much more. Learn More Sorry, there seem to be some issues. Please try again later. Submitting... Harry Redknapp believes Hearts and Hibs are bound to thrive through investment from Tony Bloom and Bill Foley. The Premiership pair have ushered in new eras, with David Gray's side finishing third in last year's Premiership amid Bournemouth owner Foley taking a 25% stake of ownership via Black Knight Football Group. That initial investment in 2024 was worth £6m and Hearts have followed up with Brighton owner Tony Bloom taking a 29% stake in the Tynecastle side, in exchange for £9.86 million. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad They are also benefiting from Bloom's renowned recruitment software, Jamestown Analytics, which has played a key role in summer transfer business under new head coach Derek McInnes. Redknapp has watched Bournemouth and Brighton establish themselves as solid English Premier Leagues clubs, now expecting them to replicate that success in Edinburgh. Harry Redknapp on Hearts and Hibs Amid transition and a difficult start to the domestic season at Rangers, Redknapp reckons both could push the Ibrox side, and make themselves the teams to beat when it comes to third spot. The former Tottenham and West Ham United manager told BetVictor Casino: 'It's great to see Tony Bloom get involved. I love what he's achieved at Brighton. I'm sure he'll do great at Hearts and Hibs are the same. The Bournemouth owners, they're invested in Hibs and they've done amazing. 'Hibs had a great year last year finishing third and they've had a win in Europe already, away from home in the first leg. Hibs are another good team. Hearts and Hibs have a big rivalry. I mean they're the two teams that could push Rangers. They're not going to push Celtic. I think Celtic will still probably be the team. But Russell Martin's gone to Rangers. They had a great result in Europe again. 'He'll have them playing a brand of football that he loves to play, with possession. He's a confident guy. Russell Martin, he wants what he wants and he sticks to his beliefs and I think that be enough if they get the right players in, they are a great club. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hearts and Hibs start to season in focus 'People don't realise just how big those two clubs are. Celtic and Rangers, two of the biggest clubs in the world. There's an incredible fanbase all over the world. But, Hearts and Hibs are the two teams this year that could challenge, I think it'll be a Celtic, Rangers one two again, and Hearts and Hibs will probably battle out for third place.' Hearts have started their campaign with a 100% record, a late 3-2 win over Dundee United at the weekend making it two wins out of two in the league, following on from winning all of their Premier Sports Cup group stage matches. They face St Mirren in the last 16 this weekend. Hibs have defeated Dundee and drew with Kilmarnock so far this campaign. They host Partizan Belgrade on Thursday in the second leg of their Conference League third round qualifier, having won the first tie in Serbia 2-0. The winner plays AEK Larnaca or Legia Warsaw at the play-off stage for a chance to reach the league phase.

Rangers progress to Champions League play-off despite defeat to Viktoria Plzen: ‘I'm disappointed we lost'
The Light Blues took a 3-0 lead to the Czech Republic for the second leg of the third qualifier but found themselves behind in the 41st minute when home striker Rafiu Durosinmi scored from 12 yards after slack defending by left-back Jefte. Midfielder Lyall Cameron levelled on the hour with his first Rangers goal but Plzen substitute Svetozar Markovic restored the home side's lead in the 83rd minute when he took advantage of more sloppy marking and the Light Blues could have conceded more, with goalkeeper Jack Butland again in fine form. Boss Martin, under fire from Gers fans after drawing their first two William Hill Premiership fixtures to already sit four points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic, told Rangers TV: 'I'm disappointed we lost. We had some really good moments, but disappointed how many shots we gave them, how many chances we gave them. 'And also disappointed with how many times we got in and around their box, with overload, big numbers, and then don't execute the final pass. 'So there were some really good moments of football. We saw the game out really well in the last seven minutes with some really good football. 'But there were way too many moments for them, that were self-inflicted as well, really. 'I said to the guys, we have to bring both sides of the game. 'So second half when we scored, we actually played some really good stuff, scored a goal and then almost switched off again, like, 'it's okay, it's fine now'. 'And we just can't do that. We have to be really relentless. So I'm disappointed with the performance, I'm disappointed with the result, but there's lots to build on, and we just need to be cleaner with the ball. 'The amount of times we played through the press in the first half and it came to absolutely nothing. 'We turned the ball over. And if we turn the ball over being really aggressive, trying something, that's fine, but we just turned the ball over so cheaply. 'We can't do that. The guys that came on the pitch really helped us take the ball in. Danilo was fantastic. Kieran (Dowell) and Nedim (Bajrami) helped us take the ball. 'So, again, another brilliant bit of learning and we're through to the last qualifying round for the Champions League, but I am annoyed. 'It's my job to be annoyed at some of the stuff, and also, we'll show them some of the really good stuff as well. 'But that wasn't enough. There's too many scary moments for the opposition that really we can do better with.'
