Nations League: Merino saves Spain in Netherlands, Germany roar back at Italy
Substitute Mikel Merino, a makeshift striker at club level for Arsenal, proved his ability in front of goal for his country too with a close-range finish three minutes into added time.
The Dutch had fought back after going behind in the ninth minute with goals from Cody Gakpo and Tijjani Reijnders but finished with 10 men after teenage defender Jorrel Hato was sent off eight minutes from time for a studs-up challenge.
Spain, who had not lost in their previous 21 competitive internationals, opened the scoring through Nico Williams after a fast start to the game. An error from 19-year-old Hato was latched on to by Spain's 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, whose pass to Pedri in the box was slipped through for Williams to fire home.
Germany came from behind to defeat Italy 2-1 at San Siro in the first leg of their quarter-final, with Leon Goretzka heading the winning goal 14 minutes from time.
Germany pressed high early on, with Italy looking to hit them on the counter, and the hosts opened the scoring in the ninth minute with their first chance. Nicolo Barella played a pass into the box for Matteo Politano, who pulled the ball back towards Moise Kean and when it fell to Sandro Tonali, he drove his shot into the corner.
Germany equalised four minutes into the second half when Joshua Kimmich floated the ball into the box and unmarked substitute Tim Kleindienst rose to power a header past Gianluigi Donnarumma with his first touch.
'There were a couple of situations that we paid too heavy a price for over the course of the game,' Italy manager Luciano Spalletti told RAI Sport. 'It was a pass from midfield, they found someone free in the box.'
Croatia's Ante Budimir and Ivan Perisic struck to secure a deserved 2-0 win over France in their quarter-final first leg, as the return of Kylian Mbappé and Ousmane Dembélé failed to get the visitors firing.
Croatia also missed an early penalty when Andrej Kramaric's spot-kick was saved by France goalkeeper Mike Maignan, and the 2023 runners-up were full value for a win that might easily have been achieved by a greater margin. France created chances and tested Croatia goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic several times, but it was a below-par performance on a night that had promised much with the return of Mbappé in particular after he sat out his side's last four fixtures.
Denmark striker Rasmus Højlund came off the bench to net the winner as his side beat Portugal 1-0 in their quarter-final first leg at the Parken stadium.
Højlund, who has struggled to score for Manchester United this season until his last game, at Leicester on Sunday, struck in the 78th minute to help spare the blushes of Christian Eriksen, whose first-half penalty was saved.
Finn Azaz and Matt Doherty scored first-half headers as the Republic of Ireland battled back to beat Bulgaria 2-1 in the first leg of their Nations League playoff.

Marin Petkov fired the hosts into an early lead at a sparsely populated Hristo Botev Stadium in Plovdiv but midfielder Azaz quickly levelled with his first international goal. Right-back Doherty, who before the game played down talk of a rift with manager Heimir Hallgrímsson, completed the comeback by nodding home the winner in the 42nd minute.
The deserved victory was a third from seven games under Icelandic coach Hallgrímsson as his side took a small step towards preserving their League B status ahead of Sunday's return match in Dublin.
Ukraine came from behind to beat visitors Belgium 3-1 in the first leg of their playoff, moving into a strong position to earn promotion to the competition's top tier. Ukraine's Oleksiy Hutsulyak, Vladyslav Vanat and Ilya Zabarnyi, of Bournemouth, secured the comeback after Romelu Lukaku had put Belgium in front after 40 minutes, nodding home from a Kevin De Bruyne free-kick in coach Rudi Garcia's first game in charge.
Ukraine, who hosted Belgium in the Spanish city of Murcia, started well and forced Thibaut Courtois into two early saves. But the returning goalkeeper, who has not played for Belgium for almost two years amid a fallout with their former coach Domenico Tedesco, was barely tested again in the first half and captain Lukaku opened the scoring just before the break with his first Belgium goal since November 2023.
In a more lively second half, De Bruyne could have doubled the lead for Belgium through a low attempt from the edge of the area that was brilliantly saved by Ukraine keeper Andriy Lunin.
However, Ukraine then grew into the game and hit back through Hutsulyak, who capitalised on a mistake by the Belgium defence to level in the 66th minute, before stretching away with two more goals.
Belgium, who earned four points from six games as they finished third in League A Group Two, face their first relegation from the competition's top tier since its creation in 2018.

Arsenal braced for permanent transfer approach as defender exit talks continue
Arsenal are working hard to shift a number of fringe players within Mikel Arteta's squad before the September 1 transfer deadline Arsenal are continuing to work on outgoings as sporting director Andrea Berta seeks to streamline Mikel Arteta's squad. Defender Jakub Kiwior, who was left out of Sunday's 1-0 Premier League win at Manchester United, remains the subject of strong interest from Porto. The Portuguese giants saw a package bid, an initial loan with an obligation to buy worth up to £23.3million, rejected by Arsenal earlier this month but club-to-club discussions are continuing. Arteta is not itching to sell the Pole but respects the player's openness towards a transfer given the Spaniard is not able to provide him with any assurances of game time this season. Arsenal would favour a permanent deal as they're yet to make a notable sale this summer but Porto are prioritising an initial loan that would become permanent next summer - though it's clear they need to raise their offer to get closer to the Gunners' valuation. Porto are in a hurry to raise cash to finance another offer and remain determined to partner Kiwior with his international team-mate Jan Bednarek at the heart of their defence. AC Milan, Inter Milan and Juventus have also been credited with an interest but at this stage, the 25-year-old is closer to joining Porto than any other side as the two clubs remain in direct contact over a deal. Another stipulation is that Kiwior would likely need to be replaced. Although Riccardo Calafiori can provide centre-back cover for Gabriel Magalhaes, he is predominately viewed as a left-back and the departure of Takehiro Tomiyasu also means Arsenal would be light in reserve at the back, should Kiwior depart. Stade Rennes' Jeremy Jacquet remains appreciated but he is right-footed and is comfortable remaining in France where regular minutes are on offer. Arsenal were keen on signing Marc Guehi and Dean Huijsen earlier in the window but there is recognition it will prove difficult to entice a top-bracket, ready-made centre-back to the club given William Saliba and Gabriel will undoubtedly remain first choice. Jorrel Hato would also have been reconsidered as a potential option if he was still at Ajax but he has since signed for Chelsea. Werder Bremen have also now emerged as strong favourites for Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein. Levante have been keen on a loan swoop for the Estonian international shot-stopper but Arsenal have been pushing for a permanent sale as Hein is out of contract at the Emirates next summer. Eintracht Frankfurt have just announced the signing of Werder Bremen No.1 Michael Zetterer and Hein is viewed as a suitable replacement as he could rival Mio Backhaus for the No.1 spot in Germany. Sevilla were also looking to sign Hein on loan before landing Newcastle's Odysseas Vlachodimos. It's understood Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker has played a role in facilitating a potential transfer, utilising his contacts at Werder Bremen, who he previously represented during his playing days before joining the Gunners in 2011. Arsenal are still trying to find a solution for Oleksandr Zinchenko. The Ukrainian was monitored by Fenerbahce but they're now prioritising a loan deal for West Ham's Edson Alvarez, instead. Real Betis, who came close to landing Zinchenko during his time at Manchester City, are among a list of European clubs to have been offered the chance to land the 28-year-old. He has one year remaining on his current deal in north London and Arsenal are pushing to sell to avoid losing the versatile left-back on a free transfer in 2026. Greek side PAOK have so far failed to follow up interest in Belgian midfielder Albert Sambi Lokonga.

Man Utd warned Benjamin Sesko is 'similar' to Liverpool flop
Manchester United have been warned that £74m signing Benjamin Sesko is 'pretty similar' to Liverpool's 'biggest ever transfer mistake'. Sesko completed a £74m move to Old Trafford earlier in the month after rejecting interest from fellow Premier League club Newcastle United. The Slovenia international attracted interest from a number of elite clubs after two impressive seasons at RB Leipzig, where he scored 39 goals in 87 appearances. Sesko made his Premier League debut against Arsenal on Sunday, coming on as a second-half substitute in Manchester United's 1-0 defeat. The 22-year-old was signed to help solve United's goalscoring problems and replace Rasmus Hojlund, who has endured a dismal spell in Manchester since his £72m move from Atalanta. But ex-Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann has warned the Red Devils that Sesko is 'pretty similar' to Liverpool flop Darwin Nunez. Nunez completed a big-money move to Anfield in 2022 but was sold earlier this summer following a largely disappointing spell on Merseyside. 'I'm not sure if Manchester United fans want to hear it, but I think Benjamin Sesko is a pretty similar player to Darwin Nunez,' Hamann told CasinoHawks. 'I think Sesko has got the body, he's got the height, he's got the pace. I think he's got a better touch than Nunez. 'He's technically a very gifted player, but he's a powerful young lad. Nunez is probably the one I would compare him with in recent years. 'I'd say his finishing is probably a bit better than Nunez, but he's got to prove it. He did it at times at Leipzig, but he's really in the spotlight now at Manchester United. 'Obviously, we've also seen that some big names went to Manchester United in the last 10 years as centre-forwards and they didn't succeed. It won't be an easy task, but I think he's capable of doing it.' The comparison with Nunez comes after Hamann said the ex-Liverpool forward could be the 'biggest transfer mistake' the club have ever made. Nunez signed a six-year contract at Anfield after completing a then club-record transfer worth £85m, but the 26-year-old was sold earlier this month to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. More Trending 'Is Darwin Nunez the biggest transfer mistake in Liverpool's history? Maybe, it's just part of the game,' Hamann told Betting Lounge. 'When you bring players in, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. 'People probably thought, myself included, if you bring somebody in for £85m, it guarantees you goals, but looking back it wasn't money well spent.' Sesko could make his first Premier League start for Manchester United on Sunday when the Red Devils travel to Craven Cottage to face Fulham. For more stories like this, check our sport page.
