Costco's CEO started his career as a forklift driver. Now he's leading a $254 billion giant rising up the Fortune 500

Ron Vachris is the third CEO in Costco's history and a company lifer who is now pushing the wholesale club to higher revenues. During his 40+ years at Costco, Vachris rose from teenage forklift driver to CEO, and helped push the company's revenue up 5% year-over-year in fiscal 2024 to $254 billion. A little more than one year into Ron Vachris' tenure leading Costco, he is already supercharging the company's revenue. At No. 12 on the Fortune 500, Costco stands above notable companies such as Microsoft, Chevron, and Bank of America. The company's full-year revenue of $254 billion jumped 5% from the same time last year, and Vachris was instrumental to the company's success. Vachris began his career as a forklift driver in his teens for Price Club, which Costco merged with in 1993. Only the third CEO in Costco history, he is a true company lifer with more than 40 years of experience at the wholesale club. During that time, he has guided the company in a number of positions including operations chief, merchandising chief, and head of real estate, Fortune previously reported. As chief executive, Vachris was awarded a $12.2 million compensation package, including a base salary of $1.1 million and $10.5 million in stock awards and some perks such as a free executive Costco membership. In the vein of longtime former CEO Jim Sinegal, Vachris likes to take a more hands-off approach to leadership, trusting employees to perform well and even innovate. 'You've got to give people room to try new things,' Vachris previously told Fortune. That approach has paid off with new ideas from outside of the C-suite. For example, employees were the first to suggest the company could repurpose leftover rotisserie chicken for their chicken salads. In the future, Vachris is looking to tackle two areas where the company sees opportunity: international expansion and improving ecommerce and technology. On the company's most recent earnings call in late May, Vachris said Costco recently launched buy-now-pay-later capabilities on its website, and also touted the healthy year-over-year growth of the company's Costco Next program, which lets consumers buy name brands at affordable prices. Costco is also testing a new initiative, first introduced by competitor Sam's Club, that allows customers to scan items and check out easily using their phone. 'Digital and technology are important parts of our future growth, and we are investing to improve the member experience,' Vachris said on the company's third-quarter earnings call. The Massive Ground Beef Recall That Rocked Costco Back In The '90s

Although Costco is known for offering items in bulk, it actually offers fewer different products when compared to other stores — around 4,000 compared to 30,000, which is one of the reasons it's able to keep its prices lower than most other retailers. Over the years, the chain has sometimes had to offer even fewer items than usual after having to pull a product from shelves. One of the biggest recalls to affect the warehouse chain happened just 14 years after the very first Costco location opened its doors. In June 1998, the company issued a recall for frozen ground beef patties in all 24 states that they operated in at the time due to concerns of potential contamination with E. coli bacteria. The decision affected 172,000 pounds of ground beef across two products (6-pound packages of Kirkland Signature Ground Sirloin and Loin of Beef, in boxes of 18 ⅓-pound frozen patties and boxes of 24 ¼-pound frozen patties) and stemmed from one reported illness in New York state. A report by SFGate claimed this marked the first time Costco recalled one of its own products. Read more: 7 Costco Kirkland Brand Frozen Meals, Ranked Worst To Best The one illness linked to the meat involved an elderly woman who consumed the product at a barbecue. The USDA conducted tests on that batch of Costco ground beef and discovered traces of E. coli 0157:H7 bacteria. Seven other people at the same barbecue who ate the beef patties did not get sick. The USDA theorized that the woman may not have washed her hands after she handled the uncooked ground beef. No other contamination of the ground beef was found by tests conducted by Costco and other independent laboratories. Costco nonetheless offered full refunds for returns of the product, even if it had already been opened. Although that was one of the worst food recalls that Costco had, it doesn't even come close to the biggest meat recall of all time. That unfortunate distinction goes to one of the 10 worst food recalls in U.S. history. It affected 143 million pounds of beef from Westland/Hallmark Meat in 2008. For its part, Costco has had other major recalls of private label products, including ones for its Kirkland Signature Organic Eggs and nearly 80,000 pounds of butter in November 2024. Cramer says call between Trump and Xi 'could change everything you see' in market

Every weekday the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer holds a "Morning Meeting" livestream at 10:20 a.m. ET. Here's a recap of Thursday 's key moments. 1. The stock market dipped on Thursday following Wednesday's subdued session. Investors are bracing for trade updates following Chinese media reports of a phone call between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping. "What's at stake is higher than anything we see," Jim Cramer said. Though details of the call are unknown, China's strong hold on rare earth materials is now a hot topic. "Are they discussing the idea that maybe Nvidia will swap [chips] in order to get the rare minerals?" Jim said. "That call could change everything you see on screen." The White House has yet to confirm the call, according to CNBC. Interest rates are still lower after Wednesday's weak ADP report. If Friday's job report confirms the ADP stats, "the pressure at this time may be so great that they [the Fed] have to do something," Jim said. 2. Club name Costco is down a little more than 3%, after the retailer on Wednesday reported May sales growth cooled down from April and missed expectations. Global sales were up 4.3% year over year versus the 4.7% expected. Excluding foreign exchange and gas prices, sales increased 6% versus 6.2% expected. The stock has given back some gains since reporting earnings last week, but is still up 11.6% year to date. Jim has been a long time supporter of Costco, touting it as the go-to retailer in any economic environment. The Club is "not profit taking" when it comes to Costco, said Jeff Marks, director of portfolio analysis for the Club. 3. Broadcom reports after the closing bell Thursday and the stock is still on a run: up more than 7% this week and 10% in the past two weeks. The Club is not enthused over the set up into earnings. But we're expecting a strong ramp from its current AI customers Google and Meta , with some potential noise from Bytedance due to headlines out of China. The semiconductor manufacturer announced earlier this week that its now shipping out the Tomahawk 6 switch, which it says is better than any Ethernet on the market. 4 . Stocks covered in Thursday's rapid fire at the end of the video were: Visa , Chewy , Procter & Gamble , Five Below , and Brown-Forman . (Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust is long AVGO, COST. See here for a full list of the stocks.) As a subscriber to the CNBC Investing Club with Jim Cramer, you will receive a trade alert before Jim makes a trade. Jim waits 45 minutes after sending a trade alert before buying or selling a stock in his charitable trust's portfolio. If Jim has talked about a stock on CNBC TV, he waits 72 hours after issuing the trade alert before executing the trade.
