Upgrading to the Galaxy Watch 8? I hope you're not too attached to your old Galaxy watch bands...

TL;DR Samsung has introduced the Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic with a brand-new Dynamic Lug System for watch bands.
While the new system promises better comfort and 11% more accurate heart rate tracking, older Galaxy Watch bands and other standard third-party 20mm bands are no longer compatible with the new smartwatches.
Users with a collection of older straps will need to invest in new ones designed for the Galaxy Watch 8 series.
Samsung has officially launched the Galaxy Watch 8 and Galaxy Watch 8 Classic. While there are welcome upgrades all around, the watches also introduce a new design element that might not sit well with longtime Galaxy Watch users.
The Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic have a new Dynamic Lug System that replaces the long-standing 20mm standard band compatibility seen across previous Galaxy Watch generations.
Until now, Samsung smartwatches, including the Galaxy Watch 7 and even the original Galaxy Watch, supported interchangeable 20mm straps, allowing users to reuse old bands and explore a wide variety of third-party options. With the Galaxy Watch 8 series, that era has come to an end.

Samsung says the new Dynamic Lug System is designed to improve the strap angle for a more ergonomic fit, leading to an 11% improvement in heart rate tracking accuracy over the Galaxy Watch 7 series. The company claims the new system also makes it easier to swap out bands, but sadly, your old bands won't fit anymore.
This is quite a big change and could disappoint many longtime Galaxy Watch owners who have invested in multiple bands over the years. While the improved heart rate tracking and easier band-swapping are appealing, those upgrading from older models will need to start fresh with a new set of compatible straps.
The Galaxy Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic will be available with a wide selection of official bands, including Athleisure, Fabric, and Sport options. The Watch 8 Classic also gets an exclusive Hybrid band range.

YouTube Music gets another music discovery tool that Spotify doesn't have

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Google is testing a new Daily Discover feed in YouTube Music. Like the existing weekly discover, the daily discover aims to help you find artists or music similar to what you already listen. Google only appears to be testing it at the moment, as the feature hasn't rolled out widely. Although its supremacy is contentious, YouTube Music is easily among the top five music and podcast streaming services globally. Its popularity naturally stems from the fact that it automatically sorts music (or other audio-based media) uploaded to YouTube. While the automatic sourcing already allows you to discover more tracks, including renditions, covers, audiobooks, etc., YouTube Music is adding a new Daily Discover feed to make the process much easier. We recently learned that Google is testing a new Daily Discover option to recommend new tracks every day based on your preferences. The feature, as spotted by Reddit user One_Flow_8127, is positioned somewhere on the homepage. It appears on top of the 'Trending songs for you' section, which appears after several scrolls on YouTube Music's homepage on the Android app. Based on the screenshots shared, we can see these recommendations show up in a carousel format, and people can scroll left or right to explore multiple recommendations. The feature shows recommendations for particular soundtracks instead of entire playlists, and also tells you the reason why it is being suggested. However, if you prefer, the suggestions also come with a 'Play All' button that should combine all tracks into a new playlist. The primary motive behind this feature is to learn about new artists and their music, which may be loosely based on your interests and listening habits. While its biggest competitor, Spotify, also offers discovery features, it primarily focuses on familiar artists and dispenses these recommendations in playlists instead of regular tracks. Set us as a preferred source in Google Search to support us and make sure you never miss our latest exclusive reports, expert analysis, and much more. The daily discover option itself isn't new and was previously spotted by another Reddit user, BarisberatWNR, about a month ago. However, for them, the recommendations appeared in a different location on the homepage, suggesting YouTube may be testing varied placements to see what is likely to get the most attention. Last month, another user posted in Google's Community forums about the feature appearing and then being removed from their account. From what we expect, the daily discover feature could complement or substitute YouTube's Discover mix, a playlist refreshed weekly instead of daily. To be able to access this weekly discover playlist, you must scroll down on YouTube Music's homepage and spot it under the 'Mixed for you' tab. This appears to be a limited test for certain users, as many others on the original Reddit post have commented about not receiving it. We can't access the feature either, and it isn't easy to ascertain whether this is meant to be an A/B test or a rollout. Further, it appears to have turned it on from the server-side, so updating the app to a newer version will not achieve positive results, though there is no harm in doing so. Follow

One Tech Tip: This summer, don't let your phone overheat

LONDON (AP) — The summer holidays are here and many of us will heading off on trips to hot and sunny destinations, and bringing our electronic devices along. But don't forget that phones, tablets and other electronics are vulnerable to extreme heat. Southern European nations like Spain, Italy and Greece have been baking under the sun, while forecasters have consistently issued heat advisories across the United States, particularly in the Southeast. What heat does to a phone: Most electronic devices work best in a specific temperature range. Apple says iPhones and iPads are designed to be used in temperatures between 32-95 degrees Fahrenheit (0-35 degrees Celsius). A device might change its behavior to deal with extreme temperatures, Apple warns. 'Using an iOS or iPadOS device in very hot conditions can permanently shorten battery life.' Your phone might temporarily warm up if you're charging wirelessly, downloading big files, streaming high-quality video or doing anything else that requires lots of power or data. Samsung says that's normal and it won't affect the performance or battery lifespan. What happens if the device gets too hot If your phone gets so hot that it becomes uncomfortable to hold, Samsung recommends that you stop using it. An overheating iPhone will alert users with a warning message that it needs to cool down before it can be used. Android devices will display a similar message, telling user that the screen will dim, apps will be closed and charging will be paused. What not to do There are things you can do to protect your device from high heat. Don't leave it in a car on hot day and don't leave it in direct sunlight for long. Apple also warns against using some features when it's very hot or in direct sunlight for long periods, like GPS navigation when driving, playing a graphics-heavy video game or using the camera. Google, which makes Pixel Android phones, advises users not to use resource-intensive features or apps while charging. Keep your gear cool The best thing you can do in extreme heat is turn off your device completely. 'Even background processes can generate heat,' say experts at British electronics chain Curry's. 'A full shutdown helps it cool faster.' Also keep it out of direct sunlight and put it somewhere cool, like an air-conditioned room or in front of a fan. But be careful about putting it in cool places. 'Never put your device in the fridge or freezer, as condensation can cause water damage,' Curry's says.

I've been using apps on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7's cover screen with this download — but I'm not totally in love with it

Samsung has made the Galaxy Z Flip 7 one of the best foldable phones you can buy right now. But no device is perfect, and there's one glaring flaw with the Flip in particular. The cover display, despite being enlarged to 4.1 inches and given a 120Hz refresh rate, is still stuck using only widgets. This can be plenty useful, saving you from having to open the phone quite as regularly. But you can't use apps in their standard form on the exterior screen, something that larger foldables like Samsung's own Galaxy Z Fold 7 or rival flip-style foldables like the Moto Razr 2025 can both handle. However, there is a Samsung-endorsed solution to this problem. It's called Multistar, and I've been trying it out to see if it solves my biggest issue with the Galaxy Z Flip 7. To enable full apps on your Galaxy Z Flip 7's cover screen, you first have to install Good Lock from the Galaxy Store. Not the Google Play Store where you likely get all your apps from normally, but Samsung's own digital storefront. Good Lock should be easy to find once you're there, as it's one of the most popular apps. It's made by Good Lock Labs, who work with Samsung to enable all kinds of unique, customizable experiences. Think of it as a secondary Settings menu for advanced users. With Good Lock installed, you next have to install the Multistar module. This module does a lot of different things, all revolving around using more apps in more places. But what we want can be found under the I ♡ Galaxy Foldable heading, and specifically the Launcher Widget. Once you've set up the Launcher Widget with up to 12 apps of your choosing, you can then add the widget to your Cover Screen carousel. And from there, you can open up these apps on the outer display of the Z Flip 7, with all the features and functionality you'd get on the inner main display. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The main hurdle to clear with Multistar is that your apps are not designed for a square display that's almost 2 inches smaller than the typical smartphone display sold these days. With an app open on the cover display, you can switch aspect ratios, using either the full screen, the portion above the cameras or a miniature vertical view. This helps in some cases, such as shrinking the viewing window in BlueSky making all the bottom navigation buttons available. But apps like Slack do not fit well into any of them, with the Tinder-style catch-up tool freaking out when you try and use it. Trying to type on the outer screen is an exercise in frustration. The default keyboard doesn't have a special small version for the outer screen, so all you can see of your app is the bottom-most line of your message. Gaming isn't much better. The small and square screen means you only get part of the game's intended view, and buttons are shrunk down to compensate. You'll need a precise touch to navigate menus, especially in an RPG game like Ex Astris, my current mobile game of choice. Before this year, I wouldn't have wanted to use Multistar on a Z Flip for long due to the irregular shape of the cover display. But with the Z Flip 7 and the latest generation of Multistar, we've hit a weird middle ground. With a four-sided display, you can now see your apps consistently on the home screen, and if you're using an app passively, scrolling through and reading without really interacting, it works well. But the moment you need to input something, like text or other commands, things get trickier. Plus, we can't ignore that to enable this in the first place, you have to download two separate things. It's hardly convenient, and could put off anyone who isn't a confident power-user of their Galaxy Z Flip. For my money, Samsung needs to fix the following — a) Make cover screen apps an option in the regular Settings app, even if it lives in the Labs section; b) Create a compact keyboard for when users need to type on the cover screen; c) Ensure that at least Samsung's own apps format properly on screens of this size. Dy doing all of this, Samsung will be able to offer users the most from their Z Flip's cover screen, while still indicating that widgets are the official preferred way to use this display. It's now about a year until the Galaxy Z Flip 8 likely launches as I write this. That gives Samsung plenty of time to work on this. But if the phone maker wanted to give us these capabilities in a One UI update before then, I certainly wouldn't complain.
