Sabah Finance Minister assures transparency in 2025 Supplementary Supply Bill
KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah government has nothing to hide in its financial management, and all expenditures under the 2025 Supplementary Supply Bill are transparent and traceable, says Datuk Masidi Manjun.
Responding to questions raised by several assemblymen during the debate, the state's Finance Minister assured the State Legislative Assembly that the government welcomes scrutiny and remains committed to good governance.
'This forum is for us all. This forum is our choice. A choice of voices,' he said.
Masidi expressed appreciation to all members who took part in the debate, noting that many of their suggestions were constructive and would be considered by the relevant departments and agencies.
'Not only I, but everyone, all departments, are paying attention. If I was unable to respond to some points during the session, God willing, I will reply in writing,' he said.
Masidi added that the government had only one day to table the supplementary bill, making it challenging to address every query on the floor.
'There was no sudden move. There was no attempt to hide any expenditure. We are reviewing it … for information, for the record,' he said.
'All expenditures are linked, and over the years, they will show up in the books. If there is ever an attempt to conceal necessary spending, that would be a violation of regulations,' he pointed out.
Masidi emphasised the importance of collaborating closely with oversight bodies such as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) to ensure accountability.
'We must work closely with those who have broad wisdom, like MACC, who are capable and trustworthy. Our duty is to apply the best governance in how we use the people's money,' he said.
The finance minister was responding to remarks from both government and opposition assemblymen, some of whom had questioned the necessity, scale, and breakdown of allocations.
'We are open. These are not secret expenditures. Anyone can check. At year-end, they will be audited, and even before then, the records can be reviewed,' Masidi said.
He added that by reiterating the government's commitment to transparency and public accountability, saying that constructive debate, even when tense, serves the greater good of the state.

During a special meeting with Sabah Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) leaders in Kota Kinabalu yesterday, Anwar had expressed his intention to mediate negotiations between GRS, BN and PH to avoid three-cornered contests in the upcoming state election. However, Masiung firmly dismissed the idea, describing it as a political 'love triangle' that Gagasan Rakyat — the backbone of GRS — would not support. He emphasized that GRS and PH Sabah already have a solid foundation of political cooperation, particularly in the administration of the state government. 'GRS has lost trust in BN/Umno due to their betrayal during the 'Langkah Kinabalu' episode,' he said, referring to the political manoeuvre he claimed was orchestrated by BN/Umno to undermine the ruling coalition. Masiung pointed out that since the episode, BN/Umno leaders have continuously acted with hostility toward GRS, employing various tactics to destabilize the alliance. 'At the same time, Umno/BN Sabah has also declared that it will no longer work with GRS,' he noted. He urged the Prime Minister to respect GRS's position and honour his earlier commitment to allow GRS chairman Hajiji Noor to lead the seat negotiations among aligned parties ahead of the state polls.

TONGOD - Gagasan Rakyat Vice President Datuk Masiung Banah has rejected Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's idea of forming a political pact between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN), ahead of the 17th Sabah State Election. He made clear that a partnership involving BN was not feasible, stressing that it would confuse voters and undermine existing understandings between GRS and PH. As Sabah prepares for its 17th State Election, shifting alliances among GRS, PH, BN and PN are shaping what could be one of the state's most complex and consequential polls. GRS and Barisan electoral pact unlikely in Sabah state election
KOTA KINABALU: An electoral pact between Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and Barisan Nasional in the upcoming state election is improbable, according to Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) vice president Datuk Masiung Banah. He stated that it is unlikely for GRS and its former ally-turned-adversary Barisan to form an electoral understanding now, as it would confuse voters. This response follows Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's desire for all three parties—Barisan, GRS, and Pakatan Harapan—to avoid contesting against each other in the state election. Pakatan, led by Anwar, has already established a seat-sharing formula with Barisan and is working on a similar arrangement with GRS, led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The current political arrangement sees Pakatan candidates not being challenged by either GRS or Barisan, while GRS and Barisan are expected to contest against each other in certain seats. All three coalitions are part of the federal unity government. The ongoing localised enmity between GRS, led by Hajiji, and Sabah Barisan, led by Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, has prevented any form of electoral pact in the upcoming state election. In the 2020 snap state election, GRS and Barisan teamed up to overthrow the Warisan-Pakatan Harapan state government led by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal. However, Barisan withdrew its support for GRS in January 2023, though Hajiji remained in power with support from Sabah Pakatan assemblymen. Sabah Barisan has stayed in opposition at the state level and is critical of Hajiji's GRS government for not fulfilling agreed promises when they joined forces in 2020. "It is impossible for an understanding to be reached between GRS and Barisan, as it will confuse voters. After all, GRS and Pakatan have already reached a consensus to continue political cooperation," Masiung stated. On Sunday (Aug 3), Anwar mentioned that efforts were underway to prevent the three coalitions from contesting against each other in the 73 state seats, despite conflicts between Barisan and GRS. Anwar admitted that achieving no clashes in all seats might be difficult but hoped discussions would lead to a solution. Masiung, however, emphasised that if cooperation among the three coalitions is necessary, they would want Hajiji to lead the seat negotiations, as Anwar stated in Tawau on May 11. He asserted that GRS would not agree with Anwar's proposal for the three coalitions to form a 'triangular' electoral pact. Masiung added that GRS and Pakatan were already collaborating well, with strong political cooperation and governance. He noted that GRS has lost confidence in Barisan-Umno, which previously criticised cooperation with GRS and Pakatan after the January 2023 coup attempt, dubbed 'Kinabalu's move.' Since then, Sabah Umno and its leaders have continued to undermine the GRS-Pakatan state government through various strategies. "Sabah Umno and Barisan Sabah have decided not to work with GRS. We hope the Prime Minister respects our position and keeps his promise to allow Hajiji to lead seat negotiations with the coalitions," he added.
