'You need characters like Zirkzee in your team'

BBC News13-03-2025

On this week's episode of BBC Radio Manchester's Devil's Advocate podcast, presenter Joe McGrath spoke about forward Joshua Zirkzee:"One of the things we highlighted about Zirkzee when we did throw criticism was that we enjoyed his hunger and his desire. What Ruben Amorim has managed to do is pull out the bits of his ability that suit Amorim's game the most."We have seen flurries of that throughout certain fixtures and we are like: 'Zirkzee might not be a waste of all this money after all because he's done really well there and I enjoy him'."You have to have characters like that in your team because they're hungry. I look at Rasmus Hojlund and I think: 'Is Hojlund hungry for a Premier League title?' I look at him and I think no, but I look at Zirkzee and I think he's got ambitions. "He wants to be in winning sides - he wants to be at the top of his game."Listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds

Nick Morgan living the dream with Stern John in St Lucia

The 44-year-old from St Julians has a management CV that features a raft of Gwent clubs but now he is part of St Lucia's set-up, working as an assistant for former Premier League striker Stern John. The 'Piton Boyz' will go up against Advocaat's Curacao, who boast players from the Netherlands' Eredivisie, in the early hours of Saturday UK time and then face Barbados on Tuesday night. Morgan has had the job since the autumn of 2024 after accepting an invite from John, who played in England for Nottingham Forest, Birmingham, Coventry, Derby, Sunderland, Southampton, Bristol City and Crystal Palace. The pair met on a Football Association of Wales A licence course and that led to the Welshman jumping at a chance to experience international football. Morgan initially did that while managing Westfields in Hellenic League Premier Division but he has now left the Hereford club and will devote more of his time to St Lucia, alongside his full-time job as a project manager with energy company SSE. COACH: Nick Morgan in St Lucia (Image: Nick Morgan) 'I'm senior team coach but now I will also be a liaison for the players in the UK, which I couldn't do when I had games on Saturdays,' he said. 'I'll go and watch those who have already committed to us but also work on a big list of those who maybe could in the future. 'Stern came over in May and we went to watch some players because we have seven professionals in the English leagues – the likes of Terell Thomas at Carlisle, Arkell Jude-Boyd at Cheltenham, Chris Forino-Joseph at Bolton.' St Lucia are 165 in FIFA's rankings and the World Cup is not a realistic aim but they did have a good crack at qualification for this summer's Concacaf Gold Cup. They finished second to Curacao in the group stages, that after stunning Advocaat's side 2-1 in their opener. The big aim is to make progress as a nation with Morgan relishing the chance to be part of a professional football environment again. He did that with Newport County AFC under good friend Michael Flynn in 2017/18 – a season that featured the FA Cup games against Tottenham at Rodney Parade and Wembley – but it was a stretch. 'I remember that we had Lincoln away on a Tuesday night and I had to be in Exeter for work at 8am. We got back to the training ground at 3am,' said Morgan, who has a wife Lucy and children Cian and Kayleigh. 'I was committed to that season but it was tough, I've been offered opportunities in full-time football but, with the level that I would have to go in at, I couldn't risk my job in the outside.' Morgan has been part of the set-ups at Newport Corinthians, Newport YMCA, Chepstow, Monmouth, Cwmbran Celtic and Abergavenny, plus he also worked with the Exiles' academy before stepping up to help with the first team. 'I've been in semi-professional football for the last 15 years since I stopped playing and it's always been something running alongside my job, working with some very good Welsh teams before going over to England,' he said. 'Now I've got this opportunity to go over to the Caribbean and represent a country, and I love the togetherness that we have as a squad and staff. 'This gives me the chance to get that experience of a professional football environment with the camps three or four times a year. I love it.'

Man Utd, Liverpool and Tottenham battling it out for Bournemouth standout

There is a three-way battle on between Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool for a player who enjoyed an eye-catching season in the Premier League last time round. Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo scored 11 Premier League goals and 13 in all competitions as he continued to impress for the Cherries. The 25-year-old signed from Bristol City in January 2023 and has been gradually improving on the step up to the top flight. His performances have been good enough to attract some heavyweight attention, with Bournemouth now facing a battle to keep hold of the Ghana international. Sky Sports report that Tottenham and Manchester United are both showing an interest in Semenyo, while he was already believed to be on Liverpool's list of targets. The report states that the forward's preference is a move to a Champions League club, which will leave Manchester United at a disadvantage, but the Red Devils retain significant pulling power, despite their disastrous last season. Spurs and United are also scrapping it out for the signature of Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo and whichever club wins that race will have an impact on Semenyo's future. Manchester United are more focussed on the Bees star than the Cherries forward and it is unlikely they would move for Semenyo if they are successful in snapping up Mbeumo. Any club wanting to sign Semenyo this summer will have to spend big, with Bournemouth keen to keep hold of a player they paid £10m for. The Sun reported in March that the Cherries would ask for £75m from any interested party. Semenyo had a trial with Spurs as a teenager, as he did at Arsenal, Crystal Palace and Fulham, all of which were unsuccessful before he was eventually given a chance by Bristol City. He used those disappointments as motivation, telling Football Focus last year: 'As a 15- or 16-year-old, you don't know how to cope with your emotions – being so high, being so upset all the time. 'I did have a lot of doubts but I had positive parents. They always told me life's not always going to be roses. 'They are all experiences that you have to go through. But it's definitely helped me and motivated me to this day.' Appearances: 81 Goals: 20 Assists: 7 Yellow cards: 15 Red cards: 0 Bournemouth have already sold Dean Huijsen to Real Madrid this summer for £50m and Milos Kerkez is expected to leave for Liverpool for around £40m. More Trending The significant departures mean the Cherries will not have to sell and will not want to lose any further players from Andoni Iraola's starting XI. Their impressive season under the Spaniard was well observed, though, with Illya Zabarnyi another player targeted for a big move. Champions League winners PSG are keen on the Ukrainian defender, who Bournemouth signed from Dynamo Kiev in 2023.
