Videos: Heavy hailstorm blankets N4 near Belfast

The Citizen4 days ago
Heavy hail fell in the Belfast area of Mpumalanga yesterday evening, causing an accident in which one person was injured when a truck and four vehicles collided.
According to Middelburg Observer, the hailstorm caused the N4 roadway to become extremely slippery.
The hail resulted in a thick ice blanket which caused vehicles to slide across the roadway.
David Ross, from a local towing service, says it was surprising that some motorists were still driving at high speeds even though the road was slippery due to the hail.
Motorists reported heavy hail from the Wonderfontein area up until beyond the Alzu filling station along the N4 highway.
Motorists shared videos and photos of the thick layer of hail that covered the road.
The road has since been cleared.
@middelburgobserver Just before 17:00 today (August 16), a hailstorm hit the N4 outside Belfast between the Puma Garage and Silos at Wonderfontein. The slippery road caused a crash involving a truck and four cars. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported. The road is still icy, drive with caution! ♬ original sound – MiddelburgObserver
@middelburgobserver Middelburg tow-in service was on scene at Wonderfontein after the hailstorm crash. He showed in videos how thick the hail still was on the road until late tonight. Scene now cleared.

uMngeni-uThukela to reinstate water curtailments

IT REMAINS to be seen how the planned water curtailments that will be reintroduced across eThekwini Municipality from September 1 will affect supply on the South Coast. Also read: eThekwini clarifies meaning of water curtailment In a statement, the uMngeni-uThukela Water said the curtailments are in line with abstraction licence conditions issued to it by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS). These conditions limit how much water may be drawn from dams to protect the long-term sustainability of the system and ensure supply during periods of low or no rainfall. Curtailments were first introduced in 2024 to bring uMngeni-uThukela's abstraction volumes in line with DWS regulations. They were suspended after a healthy summer rainfall season left dams overflowing. 'Thus far, uMngeni-uThukela Water has been supplying volumes that exceed contracted allocations to the three affected municipalities. While dam levels within the uMngeni system are currently stable, it is critical to implement prudent water management measures in anticipation of possible future drought conditions,' the entity said. The curtailments will involve percentage reductions in supply to the municipality, which will be responsible for determining and communicating specific restrictions or adjustments for end users. Hot weather is expected in Gauteng under a high-pressure system

Residents of Gauteng will face a stretch of hot and dry weather as a dominant high-pressure system settles over the province from Wednesday, 20 August, until at least Tuesday, 26 August. Weather experts say the system will intensify heat across the north-eastern provinces. 'Fine and warm to hot conditions will dominate Gauteng and surrounding regions as this high-pressure system persists,' said forecaster Mpho Rasimphi. 'We are not expecting significant rainfall during this period.' Nights remain cold despite daytime hot weather Although the days will feel increasingly hot, forecasters warn that evenings will remain cold, with some areas experiencing near-freezing overnight temperatures. Johannesburg and Pretoria are expected to dip below 10°C at night, despite daytime highs climbing well above 25°C. 'The clear skies caused by the high-pressure system result in warm afternoons but allow heat to escape quickly at night, leading to chilly conditions,' Rasimphi explained. Residents should stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and monitor vulnerable groups, such as children and the elderly. Residents are advised to plan accordingly, as Gauteng province faces a week of hot and cloudless skies. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
