'Pope Francis kissed me on the cheek – his brilliant response had everyone in stitches'
Pope Francis died on Easter Monday at the age of 88, and Lesley Joseph has shared an amusing anecdote about the late pontiff from 2019 when she met him while filming for the BBC's Pilgrimage: The Road To Rome
Lesley Joseph has shared a hilarious anecdote about her encounter with Pope Francis, which left everyone in fits of laughter.
The Birds of a Feather star, 79, met the late Pope during the filming of BBC's Pilgrimage: The Road To Rome in 2019. She recalled being granted an audience with the Pope, who kindly told her she didn't look her age - then 72.
However, after embracing her and planting a kiss on her cheek, the Pope had a five-word response that was followed by much amusement, according to the Mail.
Lesley said: "He burst out laughing and said, 'You still don't look 72'. At which point I put my arm on his arm and said, 'Oh, bless you!' Everybody fell about. 'I can't believe you've just blessed the Pope'."
This comes following the sad news of Pope Francis' passing on Easter Monday at the age of 88 due to a cerebral stroke leading to a coma and irreversible heart failure, as reported by the Vatican.
The Pope's final testament was also revealed, including his wish to be buried "in the ground, without particular ornamentation" but with "Franciscus" inscribed, according to Sky News.
Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936, Pope Francis made history as the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church when he was elected Pope in 2013.
The Vatican confirmed that the Pope passed away less than 24 hours after making an appearance in his wheelchair before worshippers in St Peter's Square for his Easter address, according to BBC reports.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell, in a statement from the Vatican, said he had "returned to the home of the Father". The statement further read: "He taught us to live the values of the Gospel with fidelity, courage and universal love, especially in favour of the poorest and most marginalised."
In 2024, Lesley Joseph made a heartbreaking confession about the possibility of reprising her role as Dorien Green on Birds of a Feather, where she starred alongside Linda Robson and Pauline Quirke.
The actress, who will be turning 80 in 2025, confessed that she doesn't know "how much longer" she can continue in the industry. Despite being as "fit as a flea," there are a "few other things" she'd like to do before hanging up her acting boots.
In a chat with the Mirror, she expressed: "The older I get the more frightened I become of forgetting my lines and making a fool of myself in front of an audience. I think I'll know when the time is right for me to retire, but it's not today."
Lesley, whose mother lived to the age of 103, previously shared her thoughts on the secret to ageing, stating in 2019 that it all boils down to exercise.
She revealed: "The secret of ageing carefully and properly is exercise, both mental and physical."

Furious Spice Girls row erupts as Geri accused of 'rubbishing band's legacy'
Geri Halliwell Horner's comments that the term 'Girl Power' is 'irrelevant' has angered some members of the Spice Girls, it has been reported Geri Halliwell Horner has left some of her Spice Girls bandmembers "horrified" after suggesting their iconic 'Girl Power' slogan is "irrelevant", it has been reported. The slogan was popularised in the mainstream by the British girl group and celebrates female empowerment. Prior to their fame, the Spice Girls were told repeatedly that they wouldn't be able to get on magazine front covers because "women don't sell" and that they grew increasingly frustrated by the misogyny in the industry. As they became the most famous girl group in the world, the Spice Girls embodied that motto with all they had and became feminist icons. Ginger Spice was no quieter than her bandmates as she declared she wanted to give "feminism a kick up the a***". However, her recent comments about "Girl Power" have left a sour taste as she appeared at the launch of her children's book. She said last month: "Girl Power was a sweet word for feminism. But if you look in the dictionary and see what feminism means, it means the 'equalisation between the sexes'. "Therefore, to me it's irrelevant what your gender is: I want everyone to feel their power. So let's evolve that word from 'Girl Power' to 'Inner Power'." A source reportedly close to some members of the band told Mail+: "The others, Victoria included, are so proud of shouting loudly about gender equality and the influence they had on society. "Does she think it is OK to rubbish the legacy of the Spice Girls, a band that five very strong women were proudly part of and which helped drive a lot of change, during a talk to promote her own career as a book author?" They continued to point out that a huge part of the band was being able to tell their fan girls that they could do things just as well, or even better, than boys. The source added that now is a time when girl identity is under threat and "she thinks it's OK to write Girl Power off in such a public way". While another source told the publication that Geri might not want to be part of the Spice Girls anymore, but suggested that she not "ruin it for the rest of those who do". Geri has undergone a major rebrand since her wild union jack dress-wearing days. The 52-year-old met husband Christian Horner in 2014, wedding him just a year later. She is mum to 18-year-old Bluebell, who she shares with her ex Sacha Gervasi, and her son Montague, eight, with Christian. The couple now reside in their lavish £7million Cotswolds estate, with Geri often sharing posts about her books, animals or while she's at events in her white and ivory wardrobe. It comes after Geri failed to turn up to Mel B's 50th birthday in Leeds last week. Victoria Beckham was also unable to attend, leaving Mel B to celebrate with Emma Bunton and Mel C. Another source claimed that Geri is not keen to be part of the reunion tour, adding: "She doesn't really want to be Ginger Spice again, there was a time and a place for that. Today she's more of a lady of the manor type." The Mirror has reached out to Geri and reps for the Spice Girls for comment.

EastEnders star suspended by BBC after disabled slur
Borthwick is said to have made the offensive remark on a phone video while the Strictly cast were at Blackpool Tower Ballroom last November. A spokesperson for the BBC said: 'This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. 'We have robust processes in place for this.' Warren Kirwan, media manager at disability equality charity Scope, said: 'Attitudes and language like this are never acceptable. 'It's not just ignorant and hurtful to disabled people, it has wider consequences. 'Negative attitudes hold disabled people back in all areas of life, from getting a job to shopping on the high street. 'Mr Borthwick needs to reflect on what he said, educate himself and do better. 'We hope he takes the opportunity to get to know the reality of disabled people's lives.' Borthwick won the Strictly 2023 Christmas special with Nancy Xu, and won the best actor gong at the Inside Soap Awards in September that year, with the show recognised with the best storyline for Loving And Losing Lola, about character Lola Pearce-Brown's brain tumour diagnosis. As part of the storyline, Borthwick, as Lola's husband Jay, and Emma Barton, as Honey Mitchell, ran the London Marathon in character in honour of Lola after her death. His suspension comes after Wynne Evans last week said he had been dropped by the BBC, following an apology saying that he used 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly Come Dancing tour. The Welsh opera singer, 53, known for the insurance advertisements, will no longer be a BBC Radio Wales presenter, he announced on May 30. Earlier this year, he apologised for language that he called 'inappropriate and unacceptable' after The Mail On Sunday reported that Evans was heard making a remark to a woman in a video filmed during the Strictly launch event. It is understood he was given a warning over the remark by tour producers. In January, he said: 'I've agreed with the BBC that I'll take some time out from my radio show and the Strictly Live tour, as well as my other public commitments, to prioritise my wellbeing. 'I am deeply sorry for the pain my inappropriate actions have caused, and plan to take this time for self-reflection. 'Apologies to those I won't get to see at the remaining performances and I'm grateful to my fellow tour gang for all the amazing support they have given me.' The singer, who performed in the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Of The Opera and also won 2023's Celebrity MasterChef, told The Sun on Sunday earlier this month that the Strictly comment was not sexual or directed at one of the female cast but was a nickname for fellow contestant Borthwick. He told the paper: 'I didn't see the statement, Old Spit-roast Boy was a nickname for Jamie Borthwick. I'm not a bad guy, I'm not a misogynist, I'm not any of these things.' Evans added: 'And so I went, 'I'm so sorry'. And that was taken as a formal apology, so the press team issued a statement. I didn't see it. 'When I read the apology within the context of the story as it had been written, I was absolutely horrified.' The Strictly tour saw contestants of the most recent series return to the dancefloor, including Love Island star Tasha Ghouri, actress Sarah Hadland, JLS singer JB Gill, The X Factor winner Shayne Ward and Gladiators star Montell Douglas. They toured the country alongside Strictly judges Shirley Ballas, Anton Du Beke, Craig Revel Horwood and Motsi Mabuse, performing in cities including Birmingham, Sheffield, Newcastle, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester and London.
