Dick Van Dyke, 99, has to skip fan event due to illness: ‘Today is not a good day for him'
Introducing herself as 'not the Van Dyke you were expecting,' Arlene Silver explained, via People, that 'when you're 99½ years old, you have good days and bad days ... and unfortunately, today is not a good day for him.'
Van Dyke and makeup artist Silver, who married in 2012 when he was 86 and she was 40, usually helm the celebrations together, along with their musical group the Vantastix.
Silver told the audience that she had to wear her 'big girl pants and hold the reins without Dick here as the safety net.'
Fans were disappointed but undaunted as the show — described by Silver as a 'whimsical, vintage circus' — did go on.
'All of the people at the event were so kind and amazing. Many had flown in from around the world and country. I did fly in from the Bay Area,' one fan, Christy Vaca, wrote on Saturday night on Facebook. 'It turned into everyone sending amazing messages to Dick Van [Dyke] who was watching at home. He means so much to us all.
'It was really Heartbreaking.'
Last time we checked in with the 'Mary Poppins' star, he was being rescued by neighbors during the Franklin fire, which started in Malibu in early December 2024 and burned for nine days.
'I'm out there laying on the ground trying to undo this fire hose, and the fire's coming over the hill,' Van Dyke said a few days after the fire started. 'What I did was exhaust myself. I forgot how old I am, and I realized I was crawling to get out.'
Neighbors managed to get the beloved entertainer, wife Silver and a number of their pets into a vehicle and out of danger, he said. Cat Bobo was missing, but he turned up when they returned home the next day. Thousands of people had to evacuate.
The neighbors 'carried me out,' he said, 'and came back and put out a little fire in the guesthouse and saved me.' Van Dyke's home was spared. Twenty structures were destroyed and 28 were damaged in the fire, according to Cal Fire.
The Van Dykes did not evacuate a month later during the tremendously destructive Palisades fire, Silver said on social media in January.
'Keeping Dick warm and entertained has been the two things that have been my top priority, so, you know, we don't have power […] or regular electricity, so we don't have Wi-Fi,' she said, via Page Six. At the time of her Instagram live, they were cooking and charging their devices courtesy of her small camper-trailer.
'I don't know of any other person of, you know, senior citizen age that would put up with this,' she added, calling her husband a 'trouper.'

Nickelodeon Star Reveals Alleged Maternal Abuse
True Jackson V.P. actor Ashley Argota Torres is opening up about the alleged "physical, emotional, and financial abuse" she faced from her mother while filming the show, and shortly after. During a recent interview with People, the former Nickelodeon child star spoke candidly about struggling behind the scenes, detailing the way her mother allegedly tried to control her every move. "I'm a mom now, so I feel like I have a new perspective and a new outlook on everything," said Ashley, who shares 13-month-old son Michael with husband Mick Torres. "I would never do to my son what my mom did to me." Ashley said her mom's abuse took a new turn when she started filming the popular 2008 teen series, especially when she began to make friends with cast members and others in the industry. "I was starting to make friends and getting close to my cast, so I think she felt her control and her manipulation starting to slip." If she got invited to birthday parties or to hang out with friends, she claims her mother would insist on going with her or waiting in the car. Ashley claims her mother would also frequently criticize her physical appearance: "I would have to sit there and pinch the bridge of my nose all the time because she was like, 'Your nose is too flat, so you need to pinch your nose to make sure it's not flat.'" Ashley recalled earning "a lot of money" from True Jackson V.P., but she claims she never knew how much money she actually made because her mother had full and total control of her finances, including her Coogan account (an account specifically created to protect child performers' earnings). "No matter how much was put away in my Coogan account, she would've spent it. I don't know where that Coogan money went. I was 15, so I totally trusted her with all of the finances. She would say, 'All right, this is the bill, and this is how much you're going to input into the computer, and this is what we're going to pay,' but I never knew how much was on my accounts." As her time on the show came to an end, Ashley got accepted into NYU. She remembered having to sign up for a dorm assignment in secret because her mother told her she could only live at home or with family. Her time at college was the "greatest thing ever" for her because even though her mother would constantly check in, she felt relieved knowing her mom wasn't physically around. But while she was at NYU, Ashley claims her mother decided to buy a new home in LA using Ashley's money. "I just got this video of her with the key to the new house," she said. Then when she returned home during break after her first year in school, she received a letter from her mom saying they couldn't afford to send her back for her sophomore year. "She wrote me a letter that she left in my room that said, 'We don't have enough money. You're not going back to school. You're going to stay home.' We never spoke about it again." But it didn't stop there. There was also an alleged incident that involved Ashley's mom going through her text messages while Ashley was in the shower. Her mom read texts she'd been sending to a co-star she went on a date with from the Romeo & Juliet: Love Is A Battlefield cast. Ashley claims her mother then made her strip, so she could examine her body. "When I got home, she told me to come to her room, and I did, and she asked me to take off the cardigan I was wearing," Ashley added. "I said, 'Why?' She said, 'Because I need to see what he did to you.' I was like, 'Whoa, what? I just went to the movies with him.'" "Then she kept telling me to take off the tank top," she claims. "I was like, 'I'm not going to do that.' She was like, 'You have to quit the show.' I said, 'I'm not going to quit the show. It's not going to happen.' "Out of nowhere, she lunged for me," she continued. "She choked me, she attacked me. It gave me a vocal node, because she had come at me so aggressively. I'd never had a vocal problem in my life until that happened. In that moment I was like, 'I don't know if having a relationship with her is the right thing anymore.'" Ashley left her family home at age 22 and never looked back. Although she revealed she's heard from her mom several times, "usually when something is going well in my life," her mom has not met her son or husband, and she plans to continue "no contact" moving forward. "In addition to blocking my mom, I've had to block my brother's number as well, because she takes his phone," Ashley added. "It's difficult, and I wish things were different there. I hope one day we can have a relationship. I feel like he was caught in the crossfire, and he doesn't deserve that." "My life is so enriched by all of my chosen family. I have so many people around me who really do show us unconditional love. Motherhood has been so healing for me. I mean, down to the features that Michael has of mine, like my nose, I'm like, 'Man, you're so cute. Why did she ever tell me to pinch my nose?'" Restaurant owner speaks out after car smashes through window where food creators were filming
A Texas restaurant is open for business again after a vehicle came crashing through the eatery over the weekend. The incident occurred at around 4 p.m. on Saturday at Cuvee Culinary Creations in Houston, according to restaurant owner Ivory Watkins. Two content creators who were dining at the establishment narrowly missed being struck by the vehicle, unintentionally capturing shocking footage of the moment, which the restaurant later shared on its Instagram page. Nina Santiago, known online as Nina Unrated, was filming her YouTube series, "Nina Unrated Eats," alongside fellow content creator Patrick Blackwood when a driver in an SUV plowed through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows where they were seated, knocking over the table and scattering the dishes directly in front of them, according to the video footage. In the video, fellow patrons and restaurant staff can be seen in the background looking on in shock as Santiago and Blackwood scramble out of their seats. Santiago wrote in an Instagram post afterward that she was "beyond grateful to be alive." She shared several photos from inside an ambulance and the hospital where she and Blackwood were apparently treated for their injuries, which show cuts on their faces, necks, arms and hands. Santiago and Blackwood did not immediately respond to ABC News' requests for comment. Watkins described the incident as "a freak accident," telling ABC News he had just walked away from Santiago and Blackwood's table seconds prior to the moment of impact. "I was looking at my two customers and thinking, 'What is going on? This is crazy,'" he recalled. "We never know what God has in store for us -- I'm glad they're safe." Watkins said he called 911 as soon as the incident occurred, adding that the manager of the restaurant was quick to tend to Santiago and Blackwood in the immediate aftermath and helped provide care for their cuts and scrapes until paramedics arrived on the scene. Watkins said "police came out and did their due diligence" and a report was filed by the Harris County Sheriff's Office. The owner apologized for the incident, saying, "My job at my restaurant is to keep my guests safe. I fell short." "We were glad that we didn't have any more guests [at the time of the crash]," he added. "The main thing is everybody is safe." The restaurant's windows are currently boarded up, however Watkins was able to reopen for service on Sunday. He said the establishment has new safety measures in place, including two company vehicles and two employee vehicles that are parked in the parking spaces in front of the restaurant's window seating.

French streamer dies live online after months of apparent abuse
French police are investigating the death of a popular streamer, who died during a nearly 12-day live stream after apparently suffering abusive and humiliating treatment. Raphaël Graven, 46, known online as Jean Pormanove or JP, is one of the biggest streamers in France on the platform Kick and died on Monday. The 46-year-old military veteran had built a following numbering more than a million across different platforms streaming himself playing video games and had often appeared in extreme challenges. He had been collaborating since 2023 with several other streamers, principally Owen Cenazandotti, known as Naruto online, and Safine Hamadi, both of whom took part in his final livestream. Cenazandotti announced his death Monday on Instagram. In the video livestream that appeared to show his death, after he stopped moving, viewers donated money to send messages alerting the sleeping streamers to Pormanove's condition. The Nice prosecutor's office told CNN that an investigation has been opened into his death and an autopsy ordered. So far, authorities have not announced any charges related to Pormanove's death. In dozens of videos from past livestreams reviewed by CNN, Pormanove appears to be the target of jokes, bullying, physical attacks and degrading stunts. Videos from their joint livestreams show Pormanove's fellow streamers competing to see how long they could throttle him, others show him being shot with paintballs or doused with water. Thanks to donations from subscribers, the group earned money from the livestreams. In Pormanove's final livestream, a counter at the top of the screen suggested the group had earned some 36,000 euros ($42,000) from the days-long stream. Leaving a mark During Pormanove's final livestream, which appeared to run to nearly 300 hours, participants were woken up by the revving of a motorbike in their shared bedroom, or a leafblower. At one point, Pormanove appears to be woken up when a bucket of water is thrown over him. In an interview with CNN affiliate BFMTV, Yassin Sadouni, a lawyer for Cenazandotti, said Pormanove suffered from cardiovascular problems. In one video, Pormanove talked of having to take medication. In another, Cenazandotti purports to read out messages Pormanove sent to his mother in which he complains of being 'held prisoner' by his co-streamers. The game 'is going too far,' Cenazandotti said his message read, during Pormanove's last livestream. 'I feel like I'm being held prisoner by their sh***y concept,' Cenazandotti said Pormanove wrote. It's not clear who precisely Pormanove was referring to and in a later clip he tells Cenazandotti, 'you know what I'm like when I'm angry' in reference to the messages. In another clip, his mother berates Pormanove over the phone for letting the co-streamers shave off parts of his hair. 'Are you proud of your hair? Did you see what he did to you?' she said, 'They are treating you like s***.' Sadouni, Cenazandotti's lawyer, told BFMTV that Pormanove's mother participated in staged stunts with the streamers. A common theme in discussions with his co-streamers was Pormanove's wish to marry and have children, a hope that often drew apparently mockery from the streamers. In a video from 2024, Pormanove was asked how he hoped to be remembered when he died. 'No wife, no kids. But what a nice guy!' Pormanove said, 'Me, what's on my mind now, it's to leave a mark.' 'An absolute horror' Sadouni said Cenazandotti – known by his streamer handle Naruto – had nothing to do with Pormanove's death and said that the incidents targeting Pormanove were all staged. 'My client is ready to be heard and to provide all useful information,' he told CNN affiliate BFMTV Tuesday. Cenazandotti has also filed a complaint with authorities that he is being harassed online since Pormanove's death, according to Sadouni. CNN has reached out to Pormanove's mother and Hamadi for comment. Cenazandotti and Hamadi were briefly detained as part of a police investigation into the humiliation of vulnerable people in January 2025, according to CNN affiliate BFMTV. According to the Nice prosecutor, they denied committing any crime and have not been charged with any crime. 'The death of Jean Pormanove and the violence he endured are an absolute horror,' French Secretary of State for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Affairs Clara Chappaz said in a post on X Tuesday. 'Jean Pormanove was humiliated and mistreated for months live on the Kick platform,' she added. Kick, the streaming platform the streamers used, said that all those involved in the broadcast had been banned 'pending the ongoing investigation,' which the site will cooperate with, per a statement to CNN Wednesday.
