Nvidia becomes first public company to cross $4 trillion mark

Canada News.Net12-07-2025
SAN FRANCISCO, California: Nvidia, the Silicon Valley chipmaker at the heart of the artificial intelligence boom, this week briefly became the first publicly traded company to surpass a US$4 trillion market valuation — a milestone that underscores the seismic shift AI is bringing to the tech industry.
Although the stock dipped below that mark by market close, Nvidia's ascent reflects how investor enthusiasm for AI is reshaping the technology landscape.
The milestone also signals a change in the guard: Nvidia's market cap now stands $900 billion above Apple's, the company that once redefined personal technology with the iPhone. Apple was the first firm to hit the $1 trillion, $2 trillion, and $3 trillion marks, but has recently struggled to match the AI-driven momentum propelling Nvidia forward.
Apple has promised AI enhancements to its products, including its often-criticized virtual assistant Siri, but delivery is lagging. The company recently acknowledged that meaningful AI upgrades won't arrive until at least next year, prompting speculation among analysts that it may need to acquire a dedicated AI start-up to stay competitive.
Meanwhile, Nvidia is racing to meet sky-high demand for its high-performance chips, which power the energy-hungry data centers driving today's AI applications. The company's influence is growing so fast that its founder and CEO, Jensen Huang, has earned the moniker "the godfather of AI." His keynote speeches now draw rapt audiences, and his personal fortune has swelled to an estimated $142 billion.
Adding to the AI momentum, tech giants including Microsoft, Amazon, Google's parent Alphabet, and Meta Platforms are collectively pouring about $325 billion into AI investments this year — a large portion of which is expected to benefit Nvidia.
Nvidia's meteoric stock rise — up tenfold since early 2023 — has propelled its market value from roughly $400 billion to briefly over $4 trillion. After reaching a high point early Wednesday, shares closed at $162.88. However, analysts remain bullish: CFRA's Angelo Zino predicts the stock could hit $196 within a year, pushing Nvidia's valuation toward $4.8 trillion.
The company faced turbulence in April when President Donald Trump's announcement of sweeping tariffs sparked a tech-sector selloff that sent Nvidia's stock tumbling below $87. But it rebounded quickly, posting a blockbuster quarter in late May with $18.8 billion in profit, even after absorbing a $4.5 billion hit from U.S. export restrictions on chip sales to China.
Nvidia is slated to report its subsequent quarterly earnings on August 27. Investors and industry observers alike will be watching closely as the company continues to define the cutting edge of the AI era.

3 Growth Stocks to Invest $1,000 in Right Now

Key Points Amazon's core e-commerce business remains remarkably resilient and continues to dominate the global retail landscape. Nvidia remains the undisputed leader in supplying the advanced chips powering today's artificial intelligence revolution. Meta Platforms leads the social media landscape, operating three of the world's top-five most-used platforms and reaching 3.4 billion daily users. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › The last year has been a wild ride for many investors, with a huge swing down in the market in the spring before rocketing back up to today's highs. For investors who want to keep that momentum going, here are four growth-focused companies that would be a smart place to park $1,000. Amazon continues to dominate With all the tariff drama, it makes sense that investors have been a bit wary of Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) compared to its big tech rivals. I think this fear is overblown. Yes, the trade war between the U.S. and China could reignite, and this would definitely impact Amazon's business, but any disruptions would more than likely be temporary. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Learn More » The fact is, Amazon's e-commerce business is highly resilient, and I don't see its dominance meaningfully threatened. Amazon enjoys a moat that few companies in history have. It is hard to overstate how ingrained it is in the daily lives of consumers across the globe. And beyond its retail business, Amazon Web Services (AWS) -- the company's cloud service -- continues to thrive, growing rapidly in the age of artificial intelligence (AI); revenue was up 17% year over year in the first quarter of 2025. CEO Andy Jassy recently drove home the potential of AWS, saying in an earnings call, "before this generation of AI, we thought AWS had the chance to ultimately be a multi-hundred-billion-dollar revenue run rate business. We now think it could be even larger." Nvidia is still on top It's no secret that the most dominant company leading the most dominant industry is Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA). Data centers across the globe, especially those running today's most advanced AI models, are filled to the brim with the company's advanced graphics processing units (GPUs). Thus far, no other chipmaker managed to rival Nvidia when it comes to delivering the most advanced GPUs needed to power modern AI, and although competitors like Advanced Micro Devices have begun to make some headway, Nvidia is still miles ahead. It also has an incredible amount of capital -- dollars and people -- to deploy in defending its lead. While this would already be a substantial moat, Nvidia's CUDA architecture provides it with an incredible advantage. This is a key component, and although it's definitely talked about, it remains poorly understood by investors given its importance. Without going into too much detail, CUDA is essentially a software layer upon which most AI technology is built. If a company is already in Nvidia's ecosystem, switching to rival chips would require the overhaul of their entire workflow, making them unlikely to leave. As a result, Nvidia's ecosystem keeps clients loyal and willing to pay a premium. Meta Platforms dominates social media Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) is the undisputed leader in social media. Of the top five most used social media platforms in the world, Meta has No. 1, 3, and 4 in Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. All told, its platforms are actively used by more than 3.4 billion people around the world on a daily basis. This massive user base continues to fuel massive growth for the tech behemoth. Its latest quarterly earnings showed a 22% jump in sales year over year (YOY) and a 38% jump in net income. To capitalize on its success, the company is investing aggressively in its future -- especially in AI -- where its enormous and engaged user base gives Meta a unique advantage. It has access to vast amounts of data to train its models and a captive audience to roll out its AI products to. And unlike some in the AI space, Meta also has the financial strength to continue investing even if the short-term return is less than stellar. Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now? Here's How Alphabet Can Become the World's Second $4 Trillion Company

Key Points The company generates the most profits among its big tech peers. Investors are worried about the legacy search business. But Alphabet has proven that it's here to stay. 10 stocks we like better than Alphabet › Nvidia made history by becoming the world's first $4 trillion company, and no other company has achieved this feat. Currently, Microsoft and Apple are in second and third place but have a bit of work to do with their $3.8 trillion and $3.2 trillion market caps, respectively. However, there's a dark horse that could beat those two to the $4 trillion threshold: Alphabet (NASDAQ: GOOG)(NASDAQ: GOOGL), the world's fifth-largest company by market cap with a valuation of $2.5 trillion. That's a long way away from $4 trillion and significantly behind Microsoft and Apple. But there's one factor that Alphabet has going for it that gives it a solid argument for reaching $4 trillion before any of the companies ahead of it. Alphabet's second quarter was dominant Alphabet is likely better known by the businesses that it owns: Google, YouTube, Waymo, and the Android operating system. It has a dominant empire in various niches, but its most important is Google Search. In the second quarter, Google Search generated $54 billion of the company's revenue of $96 billion. That's a large chunk of its total, so it needs to continue having this division perform well to succeed as a whole. However, there are some early warning signs that have investors concerned. The most significant technologies in generative artificial intelligence (AI) have the potential to transform how people use the internet. Currently, the vast majority of people seek information using Google Search. That could change if generative AI becomes more widely adopted by the masses. The market broadly assumes that it will replace Google, but that seems far from reality. One area where Google has bridged the gap is with AI search overviews, which give users a generative AI-powered summary of their search results. Management discussed the popularity of this feature during its second-quarter conference call and provided a couple of key insights for investors. First, AI overviews now have over 2 billion users in 40 different languages, showcasing its widespread appeal. Another huge revelation for investors is that it sees the same monetization as regular search results, so it's not harming Google's business at all by heavily investing in this technology. This showed up in Alphabet's results, as Google Search revenue rose 12% year over year. That's an acceleration from the 10% year-over-year growth in the first quarter. This isn't a sign of a dying business; it's a sign of one that's growing. As a result, there's no reason for Alphabet to trade at a significant discount to its big-tech peers, since it's growing just as fast (if not faster) than most of them. Its peers fetch a much higher premium The four companies ahead of Alphabet in market cap are Nvidia, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon. Compared to these four, Alphabet trades at a huge discount. GOOGL PE Ratio data by YCharts; PE = price to earnings. However, over the past 12 months, Alphabet has produced the most net income of any of these companies. GOOGL Net Income (TTM) data by YCharts; TTM = trailing 12 months. Alphabet actually produces the most profit of any company that trades on U.S. exchanges, and if it received the same multiple as its peers, it would be the largest company in the world (in some cases). Company Trailing P/E Alphabet's Valuation at That Premium Nvidia 56.0 $6.47 Trillion Microsoft 39.7 $4.59 Trillion Apple 33.3 $3.85 Trillion Amazon 37.7 $4.36 Trillion Data source: YCharts. So, if the company were to receive the same respect as its peers, it would already be the world's largest company. Whether you think most of the big tech stocks are overvalued or if you think Alphabet is undervalued, it doesn't matter. It has some of the best chances of beating the market over the next few years due to its low valuation and impressive growth, considering its size. I think it's a top stock to buy now, and it makes even more sense if you're concerned that the market in general is getting too expensive. Should you invest $1,000 in Alphabet right now? Before you buy stock in Alphabet, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Alphabet wasn't one of them.
