Jen Pawol becomes first female MLB umpire to work home plate, makes questionable first strike call

With strike zone graphics now a mainstay on MLB broadcasts and resources like MLB Gameday showing balls and strikes in detail, calls by home plate umpires are under more scrutiny than they have ever been. Unfortunately, Pawol contributed to that discourse with a dubious first strike call.
The opening pitch of the game from Braves starter Joey Wentz was inside and out of the zone, but Pawol called the 93 mph fastball a strike.
As Braves play-by-play broadcaster Joe Simpson said, "Joey Wentz likes that first call from Jen Pawol!"
That pitch looked far inside on the TV broadcast and MLB Gameday confirmed that location.
Perhaps sensing where Pawol's strike zone was situated, Marlins second baseman Xavier Edwards hit a fastball thrown even further inside up the middle for a single.
However, Pawol appeared to settle in and find the strike zone better from there, calling that inside pitch to right-handed batters consistently and getting several borderline calls correct. Wentz and Marlins starter Cal Quantrill also helped out by locating most of their pitches in the zone. Through four innings, Wentz threw 44 of his 65 pitches for strikes, while Quantrill threw 29 of 46 in the zone.
Pawol made her major-league debut on Saturday, umpiring the first game of a doubleheader between the Marlins and Braves at first base. She worked the second game of the twin bill at third base. As part of her duties at first base, she checked Braves pitcher Hurston Waldrep for illegal substances after the first inning.
The cap she wore for Saturday's opening game was given to the National Baseball Hall of Fame afterwards.
Prior to her MLB debut, Pawol umpired over 1,200 minor-league games, beginning in 2016. Before being promoted to the majors, Pawol, 48, umpired MLB spring training games during the past two seasons, the first woman to do so since Ria Cortesio in 2007.
She became MLB's first female umpire after the NBA broke that gender barrier with Violet Palmer in 1997. Sarah Thomas was the first female referee to officiate a game in 2015. And in 2022, Stéphanie Frappart became the first woman to referee a men's World Cup game between Germany and Costa Rica.

S Kitan Crawford Crawford, a seventh-round rookie known for his special teams play, picked off a pass in the end zone. Making plays on defense and not just special teams increases his value. Can he show more upside than Joey Blount? That is the question. After one game, he is proving his worth. CB Darren Hall Hall had an interception and almost picked off a second pass. He offers special teams play and is good in the slot. It is going to be tough to make the roster this year, but he certainly helped his case. New Lakers guard Marcus Smart remembers his first game against Kobe Bryant
About a month ago, the Los Angeles Lakers started to make some improvements to their roster. They addressed their big void at the center position by signing Deandre Ayton, and they also added 23-year-old sharpshooting forward Jake LaRavia while re-signing center Jaxson Hayes. But they lacked defensive prowess and toughness, so later in July, they signed Marcus Smart after his contract was bought out by the Washington Wizards. Smart is just three years removed from winning the Defensive Player of the Year, and he has long been one of the NBA's best backcourt defenders. In that game, he had the antidote to the venom of the "Black Mamba," as he held the Hall of Famer to 5-of-18 shooting from the field, although his Boston Celtics lost, 112-104. Even if Smart's defense will be diminished this coming season, he's still expected to make a significant impact on the Lakers with his ball-handling, playmaking, veteran leadership and overall resourcefulness. Somewhere, Bryant is surely smiling about the prospect of such a player joining the Purple and Gold. According to reports from the Associated Press and CBS News, 25-year-old Kevin Mares was in the coastal San Juan neighborhood of La Perla early on Sunday, Aug. 10, when a fight broke out between two other people. Mares, who is believed to have been a bystander in the incident, was shot after one of the people arguing pulled out a gun. He sustained a gunshot wound to the left side of his abdomen and was rushed to Puerto Rico's largest public hospital, where he died, the outlets reported. Homicide Detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz told the AP that the person who pulled out a gun shot at least three people, including two men who live in the area. They were injured and remained hospitalized. "We're still in the early stages of establishing a motive for the events. We can't rule anything out until the interviews are completed," Ruiz said, per El Nuevo Dia. The sergeant also confirmed that Mares and his three friends, who were also from New York, were among thousands of people who had traveled to Puerto Rico for one of Bad Bunny's 30 residency concerts. According to Ruiz, investigators are unsure of what the argument was about, and they do not yet have a description of the shooter. "We have very little information," he said. La Perla is located on the outskirts of the Old San Juan historic district, a popular tourist destination, according to AP. La Perla was previously known for its violence, and police were known to stay away from the community until 2011, the outlet reported, when federal agents raided the area. "His wholehearted kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering commitment to family made him a pillar of strength for his loved ones," they wrote in a GoFundMe post, which has garnered more than $14,000 in donations to help transfer his body from Puerto Rico to New York and hold a funeral. "Kevin had a bright future ahead, with plans to propose to his girlfriend of six years this fall, and he was always creating memories with those closest to him," the family added.
