Eddie Howe says Newcastle need ‘clarity' over Alexander Isak future

The Magpies' felt the absence of their wantaway striker in their Premier League curtain-raiser at Aston Villa as they were held to a 0-0 draw against 10 men.
Isak was left out by Howe as the Sweden international tries to force a move away from St James' Park, with Liverpool seeing a bid rejected earlier in the summer.

Howe reiterated his stance that the door remains open for Isak to be reintegrated into the squad if he wants to be but knows only the player is in control.
'We would like a resolution,' he said. 'When I say we, I'm talking about myself and I'm sure the ownership, everyone really, the players that we have, because I think we need that clarity this season.
'Any Premier League season can be hard enough. You don't need any kind of distraction to swerve your thoughts, to unbalance what we're doing.
'But I'm certainly not in control of that. And I think there's only one person really that could control that.
'Nothing's changed, the door is well and truly open. But he has to decide what he wants to do.
'I mean, that's the quickest way. But of course, Alex is in control of what he does. I'm not in control of him.'
Howe refused to speculate on whether the Magpies would have beaten Villa with Isak in the team, having failed to score when playing against 10 men for over half-an-hour.
'I don't think it's the narrative we want to go down, because it's easy to say, but you've got no way of knowing if that's the case,' he said.
'Of course, you're going to miss someone that scored the goals that Alex has, and not just the goals, but the calibre of player that he is.
'So we're not silly enough to think any different, but we just have to look and talk about the players that are here and what they've given today.
'It's very easy for the players to have a feeling of negativity going into the game or an excuse they're ready, but there was no sign of that in our performance.'
The draw meant Villa will now go more than a calendar year without home defeat in the Premier League.

They were in the ascendency when Ezri Konsa was dismissed for hauling down Anthony Gordon when the Newcastle forward was through on goal.
But they held firm with 10 men and never really looked like conceding.
'We are not happy when we are losing two points at home,' boss Unai Emery said.
'But after the red card we have to feel confident for the next matches. The red card completely changed the match.
'We have to feel happy and proud of our work and this is the level we want to achieve against teams like Newcastle.
'Today was a very good test. This is the level we are going to face this year in the Premier League and Europa League.'

Man Utd told Arsenal's winning goal should not have stood after officials 'failed'

Manchester United felt aggrieved that Riccardo Calafiori's header for Arsenal was allowed to stand because goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was impeded by William Saliba Manchester United were unfortunate to lose to Arsenal because the winning goal should have been disallowed, according to Mark Clattenburg. United began their Premier League season with a 1-0 defeat by the Gunners at Old Trafford on Sunday. ‌ Arsenal 's goal came from their first corner of the game as Riccardo Calafiori headed Declan Rice 's cross over the line after Altay Bayindir failed to punch the ball clear. Bayindir felt he had been impeded by William Saliba, but the goal was allowed to stand. ‌ The goal has seen a continuation of the debate over United's goalkeepers, with Bayindir standing in for Andre Onana, who missed the game following an injury. Gary Neville felt Bayindir was at fault and needed to be stronger, but ex-Premier League referee Clattenburg had sympathy for the Turkey international. ‌ 'In real time, I did not see any problem with Arsenal's goal,' he told United In Focus. 'But when you watch it in slow motion, you can see Mason Mount was having his shirt pulled and Bayindir was being impeded while challenging for the ball. PGMOL said they would punish this type of challenge more, but again they failed.' His words echoed those of Ruben Amorim, who felt aggrieved that the goal was allowed to stand. He said: 'I understand we want goals, but when you touch the goalkeeper that way, I think it's hard. Especially to lose with a goal like this, I think it's hard. It was a strange goal. 'When you touch the goalkeeper, he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players. He chooses to push players and let the ball pass. But again, it's the rules. If it's allowed, we need to do the same thing.' Arsenal have become the masters of scoring from set pieces over the past few seasons and appeared to have identified United's weakness. Saliba occupied Bayindir, who got a hand to Rice's cross, but could only divert it into the head of an unmarked Calafiori at the back post. 'The goalkeeper has got to be stronger,' Neville said on co-commentary for Sky Sports. 'I think he will complain that he was fouled. He's got a player in front of him, there's a lot of pushing and shoving going on. I just think your goalkeeper has to be stronger.' ‌ Neville has urged United to pursue Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez or Gianluigi Donnarumma, who is poised to leave Paris Saint-Germain. The ex-United defender believes the big personalities of the two keepers and their ability to cope with pressure would help his old club and Wayne Rooney agrees. Rooney said on his podcast: "Donnarumma, I think he's 26, he's one of the best goalkeepers in the world, it would be crazy if Man United don't go for him." However, Amorim insists he is "happy with the three goalkeepers" and added: "I think we prove today that we can win any game in the Premier League, especially against a great team like Arsenal and we were the better team. So I'm happy with the players."

Fan arrested over alleged Semenyo abuse banned from every UK football stadium

A man arrested after Bournemouth player Antoine Semenyo reported being racially abused during their match against Liverpool has been banned from every football ground in the country. Friday's Premier League opener at Anfield was briefly halted in the 29th minute after Semenyo reported being abused by someone in the crowd. The 47-year-old suspect from Liverpool has been released on bail after he was arrested the following day on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. As part of his bail conditions, he cannot attend any regulated football match in the UK, and is not allowed within a mile of any football stadium, Merseyside Police said. The force's investigation into the incident is ongoing. Match referee Anthony Taylor stopped play in the 29th minute and a fan was ejected from Anfield. Semenyo scored twice in the second half to help bring Bournemouth back from two goals down before Liverpool went on to eventually win 4-2. More Trending The following day, the 25-year-old Ghanaian international said on social media: 'Last night at Anfield will stay with me forever – not because of one person's words, but because of how the entire football family stood together.' He thanked his teammates, Liverpool players and fans 'who showed their true character', and the Premier League officials 'who handled it professionally'. Ruben Amorim: Improved display down to intensity and bravery of Man Utd players

Ruben Amorim insisted Manchester United's improved performance in Sunday's 1-0 defeat to Arsenal was down to the intensity and bravery of his players rather than any tactical tweaks to his system. One of the best displays in recent memory from United went unrewarded as an Altay Bayindir error allowed Riccardo Calafiori to head Arsenal in front early on, with United unable to convert any of their 22 attempts at goal. Although they suffered defeat, many United fans left Old Trafford feeling upbeat about the impact of new signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo in a revitalised attack that kept Arsenal pegged back for long stretches. After Amorim arrived midway through last term, United appeared to struggle to adapt to his 3-4-3 system for much of a season that ended with a 15th-placed finish in the Premier League, their worst campaign in 51 years. But asked if tactical improvements were behind Sunday's display, Amorim said on MUTV: 'The system is overrated. It's not the system. You saw sometimes we defended with five, with four, with three. Most of the game, it was three against three. 'So it's more about the intensity our players play at, if they are brave, if they are talented, if they are powerful. We show a little bit more than that. 'We have a lot to do and have to focus on the next one. I think also, they understand better the way we have to do it. 'They are prepared to do it physically and they want to help each other. That is a very good feeling. 'Sometimes, you can see one guy missing one run or one pass and you feel the team is all together. 'Let's move on. Every game in the Premier League is hard. Let's move on for the next one.' Arsenal took the points but there was much more to concern Mikel Arteta about a performance full of errors as they struggled to deal with United's energy. They rarely looked settled in a match Arteta likened to a 'basketball game' – with the frantic nature of the contest appearing to suit United more. 'I think we have to be humble in the way we did it, but at the end recognise that it's really tough,' Arteta said. 'I want to see how many teams come here and win the game. To win on the first day, I think we have to come away happy with the result and understand that we have to improve in many areas still.' Big summer signing Viktor Gyokeres made his debut for the Gunners but struggled to make an impact before being replaced just after the hour. Asked about the Sweden star's debut, Arteta said: 'Well he did a lot of things very good. You can tell especially in our high press and rhythm that we demand, that especially in the first half we were giving a bit too much time. 'It is something that we have to work on him, especially there… 'We did not manage to put the ball through to exploit his quality. But overall, coming away to Man United, winning your first game with Arsenal is a good start.'
