JS-SEZ draws RM1.34bil in investment commitments from 5 S'pore companies
PETALING JAYA : Johor has secured RM1.34 billion in investment commitments from five Singapore-based companies under the Johor-Singapore special economic zone (JS-SEZ), says menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi.
An additional RM78 million in potential investments is under negotiation as part of the second phase, he said.
Onn Hafiz said these investments were facilitated by the Johor branch of the Malaysian Investment Facilitation Centre, which helps coordinate and speed up strategic investment processes in the state.
'To date, 70 companies from countries including Singapore, China, Germany, the UK, and the Netherlands, as well as local investors, have expressed interest in investing in the JS-SEZ,' Bernama quoted him as saying during his official visit to Singapore as the 82nd recipient of the Lee Kuan Yew Exchange Fellowship.
He also met with Singapore's deputy prime minister and minister for trade and industry Gan Kim Yong to strengthen economic ties and discuss the implementation of the JS-SEZ.
Onn Hafiz said among the topics discussed were establishing a free trade zone within the JS-SEZ, improving cross-border movement of goods and talent, and developing a second Rapid Transit System link on Johor's western side.
He said they also discussed addressing the rising cost of living, infrastructure improvements, and a more efficient transport system.
He emphasised Johor's readiness to adopt progressive policies that promote growth and ensure real benefits for the people, and reaffirmed the importance of strong cooperation between Johor, Malaysia and Singapore.
'I believe the strategic cooperation between Johor, Malaysia and Singapore must continue to be strengthened to realise a development agenda that is inclusive, equitable and sustainable, so that no one is left behind,' he said.
JS-SEZ was formally established in January through an agreement between Malaysia and Singapore to boost economic connectivity between the state and the republic.
It aims to attract 100 projects worth RM100 billion and create about 100,000 jobs in high-value sectors such as manufacturing, digital economy, logistics, clean energy, and tourism over the next decade.

Pahang Sultan vows to keep speaking out against land encroachment in state
KUANTAN: The Sultan of Pahang, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, has reaffirmed his commitment to continue voicing concerns over land encroachment in the state until the illegal activity is completely eradicated. More importantly, I hope that those who have the intention of encroaching, it is better they leave Pahang, go outside Malaysia. This is because the law will make things difficult for you and your families in the future," he warned. Prior to this, Al-Sultan Abdullah had expressed deep sadness upon learning that about 10,521 hectares of land in Raub had been encroached upon over an extended period. A total of 14,494.9 hectares of government land were also reportedly cleared and cultivated illegally with oil palm, rubber, durian, and various crops, while 5,997.09 hectares of Permanent Forest Reserve were also affected. Al-Sultan Abdullah's determination to combat the activities was also evident by His Highness taking a look down and driving a four-wheel drive vehicle to see the effects of encroachment in Raub on May 8. In the meantime, His Highness expressed his desire to develop small and medium industries (SMEs) in the state through the implementation of various programmes, especially involving youth. Al-Sultan Abdullah said that young people should strive to improve their quality of life by participating in SMEs to highlight the state's various products. "I also propose to meet with the relevant state executive council member to discuss so that we can have a programme that can develop SMEs in total. RM2 billion flood mitigation project in Kuching under 13MP
KUCHING: The Kuching City Flood Mitigation Plan (RTB) under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) will cost approximately RM2 billion, according to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof. The project, divided into three main packages, includes constructing a canal, a bridge, and a barrage along Sungai Salak. Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, stated that the tender process will begin this year, with construction expected to start in 2026. 'This RTB will channel excess water through Sungai Salak. Similar to Sungai Sarawak, a barrage will be installed to prevent seawater intrusion and allow better water control during high tides,' he explained after the opening of the He Medical Clinic. The Kuching RTB is part of a nationwide effort under the 13MP (2026–2030) to improve flood resilience and public infrastructure. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently announced a RM20 billion allocation for 103 RTB projects across Malaysia. Strong response for TVET courses with 60,000 applicants, says Wong Kah Woh
TAIPING, Aug 2 — Approximately 60,000 applications have been received so far for enrolment in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses at vocational colleges nationwide. Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh said the strong response reflects the growing appeal of these courses as a pathway for skills development among young people. 'We currently have a capacity of 17,000 places across 86 vocational colleges nationwide. Various programmes are being developed from time to time to strengthen vocational colleges, enhance practical skills, and expand on the job training opportunities for TVET graduates,' he told reporters after officiating the Taiping Air Festival 2025 at Tekah Airport here today. Wong, who is also the Taiping member of parliament, said the employability rate of TVET graduates has reached 99 percent in recent years, based on available reports. 'This is a remarkable achievement. We want our vocational graduates to have the opportunity to further their studies or secure stable employment based on the skills they have acquired,' he said. — Bernama
