Selangor FC aims for strong start in Charity Shield against JDT
Muhammad Faisal, better known as Mickey, said the prestigious match would be the ideal platform to build momentum and test the team's readiness before facing a demanding season.
'We've been preparing for over two months. All the players are ready to play. I think we'll go there to get a positive result. It'll be a balanced match. In football, nothing is impossible. We'll give our best and leave the rest to Allah – who knows, it might be our fortune, insya-Allah.
'And I believe this is the beginning for Selangor to go all the way this season. We'll start on the right foot, insya-Allah. Regardless of the outcome, even if it doesn't go our way, we must continue our fight,' he told reporters after the launch of the publicity roadshow for The Sultan of Selangor's Cup (TSSC), which is scheduled to take place on Sept 27 at Stadium Merdeka, Kuala Lumpur.
Asked whether the Red Giants were prepared for a packed schedule this season involving both domestic and international competitions, Muhammad Faisal stressed that it was the players' responsibility to bear that 'burden' as part of their job.
He said players could not afford to stay in their comfort zone and must consistently strive to improve their performance and capabilities throughout the season.
'In the past, we had just the Super League domestically. Then last year, we went to the ACL2 (AFC Champions League 2), so we got to feel the difference in terms of rest and long-distance travel. But this year, we've added the Shopee Cup, which is very challenging.
'Our first game will be in Buriram. We'll travel from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok and then take a five-hour bus ride to Buriram. That's not easy. Not all players enjoy that – long travel, one day of rest, then a game, then returning and immediately having another match,' he said.
He stressed that every player in the Selangor squad, whether in the starting eleven or on the bench, must maintain high readiness levels as the opportunity to play could come at any time, and only those truly prepared could meet the challenge.
Meanwhile, TSSC chairman and team manager Tan Sri Abd Karim said the event was not just an ordinary football match but a symbolic occasion to relive the golden era of Malaysian football in the 1970s, especially the iconic rivalry between Selangor and Singapore, who met 23 times in Malaysia Cup finals, with Selangor winning 12 of those encounters.
The 21st edition of TSSC will kick off with a match between the Selangor Veterans and the Singapore Veterans, followed by the main event between Selangor Selection and Singapore Selection.
The Selangor Selection has lifted the Sultan of Selangor's Cup 10 times – in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2018, 2019 and 2024.
The Singapore Selection, meanwhile, has won the title seven times – in 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2016 and 2017 – while both teams were declared joint champions in 2004. - Bernama

Kuching City off to flying start with big win over TRW
KUCHING: Kuching City FC's 4-0 victory over Kelantan The Real Warriors (TRW) in their opening Super League match last night not only secured three valuable points, but also served as an early morale booster for Aidil Sharin Sahak's squad to face the challenges ahead. Kuching City FC assistant head coach Firdaus Morshidi, however, acknowledged that the triumph at the Sarawak Stadium did not mean the team could rest on their laurels, as there were still many aspects to improve on, given that several players were new and still adapting to the team's style of play. "Overall, they played well. On the field they gave 100 per cent, as they did in training before this match. "This win was indeed part of our plan to give the squad a positive momentum," he said at the post-match press conference. Commenting on preparations for their next match, Firdaus said the team's focus is now on the FA Cup clash against Brunei DPMM on Aug 16, before returning to Super League action against Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) on Aug 24. "We will take it step by step... Next, we focus on the FA Cup first, then meet JDT. Changes to the starting line-up for the next match will depend on the players' fitness and injury status," he said. He also expressed optimism that the Cats could go far in the FA Cup and Malaysia Cup if they maintain their performance momentum. "God willing, if we can go further, all the better. If we reach the final, Alhamdulillah. The target remains to win," he said. In last night's match, Wanja Ronald Ngah scored twice in the sixth and 71st minutes, while Joao Pedro (17th minute) and Ramadhan Saifullah (injury time) sealed a stylish victory for the Cats over Elavarasan Elangowan's squad. — BERNAMA

Away game to start season
Published on: Sunday, August 10, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 10, 2025 By: James Wong Text Size: Most of the players have been with the team for at least two years and so is the bond. Kota Kinabalu: Sabah FC's first game in the new Super League season scheduled on August 19 has now been postponed till August 29 due to the Sabah Masters Athletics Championship, which is being held at Likas Stadium this weekend. As a result, Sabah FC season opener will now be an away game against Kuala Lumpur FC on August 13. Advertisement A home game to kick- start the season is always the best tonic for any team to register their first win with the support of their fans. Anyway, playing away doesn't mean that you are going to lose, but it is always going to be a difficult game as the host will have the backing of their home crowd and the pressure will be high for the visiting team. However, I believe with a positive mindset and strong confidence, we should be able to perform well and get a good result. After all, Sabah FC are not a new team. Most of the players have been with the team for at least two years and more. The comradeship of the players is definitely there and so is the bonding. Advertisement The old guards Saddil Ramdani, Telmo Castanheira, Park Taesu and Ko Kwang-min are no longer in the picture. The new faces to replace them are striker Ajdin Mujagic from Bosnia Herzegovina , midfielder Dean Pelekanos from Australia and defender Dane Ingham from New Zealand as well as naturalised national player Fergus Tierney. It will be interesting to see how well these players have blended into the team. I guess the first game against Kuala Lumpur will give us the answer. Darren Lok now has a new partner upfront with Ajdin and Fergus, who is one of the players in the National Under-23 squad. He is young and hungry and have a bright future. I just hope the new look strike force will make an immediate impact on the team and get us the goals. Jafri Chew, who seldom started the games past few seasons, is an asset and may have more playing time to contribute this season. With the absence of Telmo, I am certain Stuart Wilkin will have to take the lead in the engine room and hopefully his partnership with the new imports will be able to perform well. Centreback Gabriel Peres who missed the last few matches towards the end of last season due to injuries is now back with the team. I am sure the coaches are relieved to see his presence as he not only helped the team in defence but also managed to score goals. Let's hope the team can bring home the three points.
