The Chevrolet Corvette is now the fastest American car around the Nürburgring
In a demonstration aimed at showcasing its performance credentials on one of the world's most demanding tracks, Chevrolet brought three production-spec Corvette variants, each piloted by a non-professional driver. The results offer a compelling snapshot of the brand's capabilities.
The 500kW Corvette Z06, driven by Aaron Link, completed a lap in 7:11.826. Meanwhile, Brian Wallace clocked a 6:50.763 in the 782kW Corvette ZR1 — 2.691 seconds quicker than the 608kW Ford Mustang GTD managed in May. This makes it the fastest lap recorded at the Nordschleife by a vehicle from an American manufacturer.
The standout performance came from Drew Cattell, a GM vehicle dynamics engineer, who recorded a 6:49.275 lap in the electrified, all-wheel drive 932kW Corvette ZR1X. According to Chevrolet, this is the fastest Nürburgring lap by a non-professional driver on the list of official records. It's also 0.053 seconds quicker than the time set by the Porsche 911 GT3 RS.
All three Corvettes used were US production-spec models, with modifications limited to track-mandated safety equipment, including a roll hoop, full containment race seat, fire extinguisher and six-point harness. The lap times were recorded under the Prototype/Pre-Production category, as the ZR1 and ZR1X are not sold in Europe and the Z06 used was a North American variant.

'No car manufacturer has done a Nürburgring lap attempt like this before,' said GM president Mark Reuss.
'From development to production and now at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, the Green Hell, we have shown there is no limit to what our GM engineers and vehicles can accomplish. These are the best Corvettes in history.'

Right-hand drive American muscle car includes warranty, service plan and finance options. CVH Auto Group, operating out of Bryanston, is now offering the factory-built right-hand drive 2025 Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray to local buyers. This comes fresh off the back of Durban-based Rospa International's partnership agreement with Australian Autogroup International (AGI) to bring in converted right-hand drive American muscle cars and trucks. Fully-backed Chevrolet Corvette Priced from R3 700 000, and available in Coupe and Convertible body styles, CVH's Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingrays are not grey imports or aftermarket conversions. They are fully homologated for South Africa and come with warranties and a service plan. This also means that trade-ins, local financing, and insurance are available to new buyers. Offering a sporty balance between road and track, this model runs a 6.2-litre, mid-mount, V8 producing 365kW of power and 637Nm of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels courtesy of an eight-speed dual clutch transmission. What is worth noting is that the South African Corvette Stingray come equipped with Chevrolet's Z51 Performance Package as standard fitment. This means you get the likes of a sports exhaust, upgraded cooling system and specially track orientated suspension. Which in turn translates into a claimed 0 to 100km/h time of 2.9 seconds. And a top speed that is said to be 312km/h. This track-ready, road-going supercar features a 5.5-litre flat-plane crank V8 engine that revs all the way to 8 600rpm. It features razor-sharp handling and aerodynamically enhanced design for greater downforce. The claimed 0-100 km/h comes in at 2.9 seconds and the top speed at 322km/h.

Hyundai's incoming Hilux and Ranger rival will be a product of GM
Newly expanded on joint venture will result in two bakkies - both projects headed by the General. Hyundai has furthered its partnership with General Motors (GM) by announcing a strategic signing for the developing of five new vehicles starting in 2028. A joint venture signed last year, the expanded agreement, confirmed this week, will focus largely on Central and South America, comprising a compact SUV, a car of no description, and an electric commercial van for North America. Bakkie by GM, not Tasman More significantly, GM will head up Hyundai's bakkie programme for the introduction of two bakkies, one being a 'mid-size pick-up' that references the Korean brand's long awaited rival for the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, Isuzu D-Max, Nissan Navara, Volkswagen Amarok and Mitsubishi Triton. ALSO READ: Hyundai eyeing Ranger and Hilux bakkie rival by at least 2029 Reported in June as still being on the cards, albeit only in 2029, the link-up with GM effectively rules the possibility of the Hyundai bakkie using the platform of sister brand Kia's Tasman. This, after Kia's Australia Product Head, Roland Rivero, remarked that a platform sharing deal would offset some of the costs invested into the body-on-frame Tasman. There's no reason why the two can't both be successful. The two can still work side-by-side and capture some market share, so I'd be all for it,' Rivero told In a prior statement to the publication, Hyundai Australia's CEO, Don Romano, admitted that while the Tasman presents the most favourable base for its bakkie, 'I want to put something out there that is uniquely Hyundai'. 'There is nothing wrong with the body-on-frame platform that Kia is using for the Tasman. It's a great platform, I have no problem with that whatsoever, I just have to make sure the design is uniquely Hyundai,' he said. Instead of sister brand Kia's Tasman, the South American Chevrolet S-10 will seemingly provide the base for Hyundai's first body-on-frame bakkie. South America's version of the Colorado sold in North America, the S-10, also underpins the TrailBlazer SUV, which made way for its distant relative, the Isuzu MU-X, when GM departed South Africa in 2017. World model? Despite the initial focus on the mentioned American markets, the joint statement announcing the partnership mentions vehicle exploration for global markets, suggesting availability to other markets, not only with the steering gear on the left. The statement further states the partnership as producing 800 000 vehicles a year once into full operation, and the sharing of platforms with uniquely developed interiors and exteriors. Second bakkie While no further details have been released, the GM-underpinned Hyundai is expected to take-up station above the unibody Santa Cruz, which will remain exclusive to North America despite rumours last year alleging the next generation as possibly becoming a world model. Santa Cruz is currently Hyundai's only bakkie sold exclusively in the United States. Image: Hyundai The mentioned electric van, meanwhile, could use the Staria as a base and potentially replace the archaic Chevrolet Express that has been in production since 1996. Less clear is the second bakkie, which could be the second generation Santa Cruz, or even a completely different model. Hyundai's pending second bakkie will either be a new Santa Cruz, or possibly a junior version based on the depicted Chevrolet Montana. Image: Chevrolet do Brasil Speculation, however, points to the newcomer being possibly based on the Chevrolet Montana – sold in South Africa as the Opel/Chevrolet Corsa Utility and then the Chevrolet Utility – which GM solely fields in South America. 'By partnering together, GM and Hyundai will bring more choice to our customers faster, and at lower cost,' the latter's Senior Vice-President and Global Chief of Procurement and Supply Chain, Shilpan Amin, said. This is the first time ever that a Corvette has been available in right-hand-drive form from the factory. Ever dreamed of owning a Corvette? For the first time ever, the Chevrolet sports car is available in South Africa as a factory-built right-hand drive vehicle. However this doesn't mark the official return of the Chevrolet brand, which exited our market when General Motors pulled the plug in 2017. Rather, it is an exclusive and low-volume import via the CVH Auto Group, based in Bryanston, Johannesburg. What's the price? Getting the new Corvette Stingray into your driveway will set you back from R3.7 million, with both the coupe, convertible and Z06 models being available to South Africans. That makes it a shade more expensive than the Porsche 911 GTS (R3.25m) and cheaper than the 911 GT3 (R4.62m) and Mercedes-AMG's GT63 S (R4.38m). The Corvette Stingray, introduced in 2020, is the first-ever series-produced mid-engined Corvette, with previous iterations having been front-engined.
