Delta Air Lines flight with nearly 200 aboard diverted to RSW after battery catches fire

Yahoo07-07-2025
A routine flight from Atlanta to Fort Lauderdale with nearly 200 people on board diverted and made an emergency landing after airline officials say a personal battery caught fire.
"Flight attendants worked quickly to extinguish a probable burning personal battery belonging to a customer while pilots followed procedures to safely divert the flight," Samantha Facteau, spokesperson for Delta Air Lines, wrote in an emailed statement. "We appreciate the quick work and actions by our people to follow their training, and we apologize to our customers for the delay in their travels."
Facteau said Delta flight 1334 had 185 passengers and six crew members on board.

The crew diverted to Fort Myers' RSW airport because of residual smoke from the extinguished personal device and declared an emergency out of an abundance of caution, Facteau said.
Facteau explained that officials continued to evaluate the aircraft.
Victoria Moreland, spokesperson for the Lee County Port Authority, said the flight landed in Fort Myers, 130 miles away from its destination, about 8:50 a.m.
"There was no impact to flight operations at RSW," Moreland said in an emailed statement.

These Airlines Have Issued Travel Waivers Today For Major East Coast Hubs Amid Tropical Storm Erin

Due to forecasted heavy rain and thunderstorms along the East Coast, and with Tropical Storm Erin likely to become the season's first hurricane, major U.S. airlines are allowing passengers flying in or out of hubs in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic to change their travel plans at no extra cost. Summer thunderstorms are a common cause of flight delays. getty Southwest Airlines has a travel advisory allowing passengers scheduled to fly in or out of 12 east coast airports Wednesday or Thursday to rebook without a penalty for travel within 14 days. Delta Air Lines issued a travel advisory covering nine airports in major Northeast and Mid-Atlantic hubs—Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Washington—allowing passengers ticketed to fly Wednesday or Thursday to rebook at no charge for travel through Saturday, Aug. 16. JetBlue Airways has a travel alert covering five New York metro airports—John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia, Newark, Islip and Westchester County—letting passengers ticketed for travel Wednesday to reschedule for free through Aug. 16. 'A large area of warm and moist air already present across the eastern U.S. and into the Deep South will be an ingredient for scattered showers and thunderstorms that are expected to be most active from late afternoon into the evening hours,' according to the National Weather Service. 'Heavy rain can be expected to accompany the stronger storms through the next couple of days in these areas.' How Can Air Travelers Stay Updated On Flight Delays And Cancellations? As of 9:45 a.m. Wednesday, more than 930 flights in the United States were delayed, according to data from Flightaware. This is not unusual in the summer. Travelers flying Wednesday and Thursday afternoon should check their flight status before heading to the airport to make sure it is operating on time. Passengers with flights covered by an airline travel waiver may consider rebooking to a later date without having to pay a change fee or fare difference. Travelers can download the carrier's app to monitor for updates or plug their flight information into FlightAware and click the 'Where is my plane now?' link just under the flight number. The tool lets flyers see if their plane is running ahead of schedule, on time or behind schedule—typically before the airline announces a delay or cancellation, which can save valuable time if rebooking is necessary. Tropical Storm Erin will 'likely become a hurricane by late Thursday or early Friday' according to the most recent update from the National Hurricane Center. As of Wednesday morning, the storm has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph and is moving across the Atlantic Ocean at a speed of roughly 20 mph and will impact portions of the northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by this weekend. Most forecast models do not show the storm making landfall in the United States. Airline Stocks Take Flight, Rising Above Cloudy Early-Year Outlooks

Airline-stock investors endured a bumpy ride to start the year. Things are a bit smoother now. Shares of United Airlines (UAL), Delta Air Lines (DAL), American Airlines Group (AAL), Alaska Air Group (ALK), and JetBlue Airways (JBLU) all soared on Tuesday. The US Global Jets exchange-traded fund (JETS) also climbed, and is now roughly flat year-to-date after declining through the spring. The July consumer price report released early Tuesday helped carriers stick the landing. It showed airfares rose 4% in last month, breaking a streak of declines. Jet fuel prices, meanwhile, have fallen to start August. Trade tensions, declining consumer confidence, weather conditions, and general uncertainty were cited as headwinds for the airline industry earlier in the year; the International Air Transport Association in June, trimmed its annual net profit estimate for the sector. The industry outlook now looks more stable, with carriers having mostly restored their earnings guidance after pulling the forecasts earlier this year. There are outliers in the group. Spirit Airlines (FLYY), which emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March, on Monday said that the company continues to be affected by "adverse market conditions," including weak domestic leisure travel in the second quarter and a "challenging" price environment, according to a company filing. Spirit Airlines' management also issued a "going concern" warning in the filing, saying they had "substantial doubt" in the airline's ability to continue operating within the next 12 months. Its stock was down 40% on Tuesday. Read the original article on Investopedia
