Paul Skenes tries to lift skidding Pirates against MLB's best in Tigers
Skenes (4-8, 2.01 ERA) will aim to continue his bid for the National League's Cy Young Award while trying to pull Pittsburgh out of its worst stretch of this season. The Pirates have lost three in a row since the All-Star break and 11 of their past 12 games.
The Tigers still own the best record in the majors entering Monday's game with 60 wins, but they have been struggling of late. Detroit's 2-1 victory at Texas on Sunday night snapped a season-worst six-game losing streak. But the Tigers scored only three runs in the three-game series against the Rangers and nearly squandered another strong start from All-Star ace Tarik Skubal.
Detroit will turn to Flaherty (5-9, 4.65), who is familiar with the Pirates from his days pitching for the St. Louis Cardinals and had plenty of success against them in his career. Flaherty is 10-1 with a 2.75 ERA in 16 career starts and 17 appearances overall against Pittsburgh.
But the Tigers need to get Flaherty going again, as he has not picked up a win since June 8. In his most recent start on July 13 against Seattle, Flaherty allowed two runs on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over five innings.
"You kind of stumble into the (All-Star) break a bit, however you want to put it," Flaherty said after getting a no-decision against the Mariners. "Myself, I could have thrown a bit better in the first half, but you wipe the slate clean and move forward."
Skenes pitched a scoreless first inning for the National League this past Tuesday, which included strikeouts of two Detroit All-Stars, Gleyber Torres and Riley Greene to lead off the game.
Skenes will now turn his attention to winning a Cy Young while his team looks for any positives down the stretch of what appears to be another losing season. Skenes, who finished third in the Cy Young voting during his NL Rookie of the Year season last year, has struck out 131 batters in 121 innings.
The Pirates have been keeping an eye on his innings as Skenes hasn't pitched more than five in his past four starts.
"That's why we're doing these shorter starts -- hopefully to set me up well to come out strong in the second half and continue to take on volume," Skenes said after his most recent outing on July 11 when he allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six over five innings in a 2-1 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
Although Detroit is struggling to produce runs of late, Skenes has faced a lack of run support for most of the 2025 season when he's been on the mound. Skenes is tied with teammate Mitch Keller for the least run support of any NL regular starting pitcher with 2.54 runs per game, according to Screwball.AI.
Detroit shortstop Javier Baez exited Sunday's game in the sixth inning. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch didn't elaborate much as to why, but told reporters after the game that Baez "wasn't feeling right."

Vikings LT Christian Darrisaw (ACL, MCL) cleared for camp
July 23 - Vikings left tackle Christian Darrisaw will not begin training camp on a restricted list, signaling his rapid recovery from torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments and a positive omen as Minnesota introduces another new starting quarterback. Darrisaw is already active in individual and position-specific work 10 months after he tore the MCL and ACL in his left knee Week 8 at Los Angeles, one of the team's three regular-season losses last season. Second-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy is the starter for the Vikings. They'll turn to the first-round pick after Sam Darnold signed with the Seahawks in free agency. The previous offseason, Kirk Cousins bowed out in free agency to sign with the Falcons. Darrisaw's status was a mild surprise because of his limited participation in minicamp. Three weeks after a published report put Darrisaw's availability for the start of the regular season in doubt, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said Minnesota is counting on their left tackle and new right guard Will Fries being on the field this month. "I want to highlight the work they put in this summer to put themselves in a position to be out on the grass practicing, all in different capacities," O'Connell said. "We are very pleased with where those guys are at and, you know, their timelines to fully returning to daily participation." Fries fractured his right tibia during a Week 5 start for the Colts but checked out medically and passed his physical before signing with the Vikings as a free agent in March. --Field Level Media

Giants' Malik Nabers says he can be the NFL's best receiver... but admits he may need surgery
The opening of training camp is already the most optimistic day of the NFL season, but second-year New York Giants receiver Malik Nabers took it a step further Wednesday when asked if he can be the very best at his position. 'I can be,' the 21-year-old said after his first practice of 2025. 'I feel like I should be one of those top guys in a few years, if not next year.' The statement made waves online, where many wrestled with comparisons between Nabers and other former LSU stars at the position, like Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase or Minnesota 's Justin Jefferson. Still, Nabers' self-confidence is entirely understandable given his successful rookie campaign: The former first-round pick set a rookie record with 109 receptions in 2024 despite learning to play alongside four struggling quarterbacks. And that should be less of a problem this year with the additions of veteran starter and Super Bowl winner Russell Wilson, backup quarterback and former NFL starter Jameis Winston, as well as rookie first-round pick Jaxson Dart. So even if Wilson were to struggle, the team now has serviceable backup options in stark contrast to the 3-14 Giants of a season ago. But just when some optimism seemed to be creeping into the Quest Diagnostics Training Center, Nabers abruptly ended the feelgoodery by revealing a potential toe surgery looming on the horizon. 'Decisions will be made when the time is right,' Nabers said. 'Right now, I'm just focusing on locking in and getting ready for the season. 'There's been talk about [surgery] — just never really came to complete thought in mind for me to do it. I've been managing it well. Everything has been going with the rehab.' Wednesday was Nabers' first practice of the offseason after missing organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp with the same lingering toe problem that has affected him since his days at LSU. Although he said 'time will tell' if the injury has been resolved, Nabers insisted he 'felt good' at Wednesday's practice, which is excellent news for head coach Brian Daboll & Co. Daboll was asked about his expectations for Nabers this season, but didn't say much beyond: 'Keep improving.' As for a Giants offense that ranked 30 in yardage and 31 in points last season, Nabers is, once again, optimistic. 'Very explosive,' Nabers said. 'We've got a lot of talent on our side of the football… Sky is the limit for us.' Nabers specifically mentioned catching some nice passes from two of his new quarterbacks, Wilson and Dart. In particular, Nabers explained, Wilson's energy and optimism were useful after a slow start to practice. Although he didn't call out Dart by name, the rookie's first pass was intercepted and returned for a touchdown by cornerback Nic Jones, which appears to be when Wilson rallied his teammates. 'He's a great leader,' Nabers said of Wilson. 'He's one of those quarterbacks that he gets everybody going, so we needed that in the huddle today. We kind of started off slow, but with Russ, with his leadership, we kind of picked things up at the end.' Wilson did find Nabers in the corner of the end zone on Wednesday for an easy touchdown, which Giants fans are hoping will become a regular sight in 2025.

Fans furious over potential deal that would see ESPN take control of NFL Network
ESPN and the NFL are reportedly 'inside the five-yard line' in negotiations over a deal that could leave football fans furious. The two parties are said to be inching closer to an agreement that would see the network acquire a significant portion of NFL media, including the RedZone Channel, according to The Athletic. In addition to RedZone, which simultaneously broadcasts all the best action from across the league's Sunday slates, ESPN is reportedly also in line to acquire the NFL Network and seven regular-season games that currently air on the league-owned network. It's currently unclear how much the blockbuster deal could cost the network but it is believed an agreement could be imminent. Talks have reached such a stage that the league has informed team owners that they may need to vote as early as next month, the report added. However, NFL fans seemingly hope negotiations will crumble before a vote takes place as they were left seething over the bombshell news Wednesday. Many on social media claimed that RedZone's quality would tank under the stewardship of ESPN. 'I think it'll be a lesser product. Redzone and NFL network are better as their distinct selves. The product doesn't need ESPN's spin on it. Look what they did with the UFC,' one user shared on X. 'ESPN gonna find a way to make it worse aren't they,' another claimed, while a third added: 'This will go downhill so much if it moves to ESPN.' 'ESPN just buys products and ruins them. No way it's actually better and most likely will get way worse. And probably will have tons of commercials,' weighed in a fourth. 'I don't see this being a positive thing for the fans…,' posted another, with one user asking: 'Can ESPN just go away already?' For years, RedZone was known for its 'seven hours of commercial-free football' but the fear of increased advertisements following an ESPN takeover seemed to be a point of contention for a lot of fans. 'Get ready for advertisements 24 hours a day,' one dejected fan posted, while another sarcastically added: 'So much for commercial free football.' In May, Scott Hanson announced that he would be returning as host of the show for a 17th season this fall. Fans were left furious as the bombshell report broke with many slamming the network Hanson's status as host of RedZone, and the show's airing as a whole, came into question as speculation ramped up about his NFL contract. Earlier this year, there had been reports that walks between the host and the network had stalled with his former contact expiring at the end of the 2024 season. But the veteran host confirmed his return in a social media statement earlier this year. '100 days from now = NFL RedZone. (& for those wondering: Yes, I *will* be there. We have A LOT of Touchdowns to watch together!) #NFLRedZone,' Hanson said.
