Kremlin says Putin is ready to hold talks with Zelenskyy, but there are issues with Zelenskyy's legitimacy
Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, has said Putin is ready to hold talks with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, but that "the establishment of agreements should be discussed given the existing possibility of Zelenskyy's legitimacy being challenged".

Details: Peskov claimed that Putin "has repeatedly said that he would be prepared to negotiate with Zelenskyy if necessary".

Earlier, in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan, Zelenskyy said he was ready to sit down with Putin if it was the only way to bring peace to Ukrainians.
Later, the Kremlin said that despite the "issues with Zelenskyy's legitimacy", Moscow was still open to talks.
On 6 February, Zelenskyy said that he was ready to hold talks with Putin when there is an understanding regarding the end of the war. Meanwhile, the president suggested that Putin was afraid to talk to him about ending the war.
On 9 February, Zelenskyy said he was ready to meet and negotiate with Putin if he understood that the United States and Europe "would not abandon" Ukraine.

In the autumn of 2022, when Russia enshrined the annexation of four of Ukrainie's oblasts in its constitution, Ukraine banned direct talks with Putin.
Ukrainian law also prohibits the holding of elections during martial law.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated that elections in Ukraine are very important, but they can only take place after the hot phase of the war is over and martial law is lifted.

At least two people have been killed and another 17 injured in the biggest Russian drone attack on Ukraine's second-largest city of Kharkiv, the mayor says. Ihor Terekhov says that overnight Russia launched 48 drones, as well as two missiles and four gliding bombs. "We have a lot of damage," he says, adding that three high-rising residential buildings were hit. Footage has emerged showing several storeys of one such building on fire. Six people were killed and 80 injured across Ukraine the previous night, when Russia attacked the country with more than 400 drones and nearly 40 missiles. That attack came days after Ukraine's daring drone strikes targeting Russian strategic warplanes at four air bases deep inside the country. Ukraine's security service SBU said at least 40 Russian aircraft were struck during its Operation Spider Web last Sunday. Ukraine says 117 drones were used: they were first smuggled into Russia, then placed inside wooden cabins mounted on the back of lorries and concealed below remotely operated detachable roofs. The lorries were then apparently driven to locations near the Russian air bases by drivers who were seemingly unaware of their cargo. The drones were then launched remotely. Russian President Vladimir Putin launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
