Micah Richards says Arsenal star 'has to have more minutes' against PSG

Metro07-05-2025

Micah Richards believes Ethan Nwaneri 'has to have more minutes' if Arsenal need a difference-maker to come on and change the game in their Champions League semi-final second leg with PSG.
The Gunners enter tonight's meeting in Paris trailing 1-0 in the tie after Ousmane Dembele scored the only goal of the game in front a subdued Emirates crowd a week ago.
The French champions were the deserved victors last Tuesday, but Arsenal did have chances to level through Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, who were both denied by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Mikel Arteta waited until the 83rd minute to make his first change, with Ben White coming on in place of the injured Jurrien Timber.
Nwaneri was also introduced, coming on for Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard in the 89th minute, but the 18-year-old academy graduate was not able to make a significant impact in the limited time he was given in north London.

'I think Nwaneri has to have more minutes. I think he's a player that can make an impact in the game because he's very unpredictable,' ex-Manchester City and England defender Richards said on the latest episode of The Rest Is Football.
'We knows he's got quality but I think he needs more minutes.
'If the game is still 0-0 after 60 minutes, then Arsenal have got a real chance, but we know the quality of PSG.'
The Gunners were without Thomas Partey in the first leg, with the central midfielder suspended after picking up a late booking in the previous round against Real Madrid.
Richards – a lifelong fan of Arsenal – feels Partey's return could free up Declan Rice to have more of an influence on proceedings at the Parc des Princes.

'I think it's different this time around because Thomas Partey is back,' he added.
'You see Declan Rice against Bournemouth, in terms of him being released further up the pitch.
'I really believe it is going to be an open game because Arsenal now haven't got anything to lose, but they can't go all gung-ho in the first 20 minutes, thinking they have to win it. Keep it tight.
'Arsenal, I believe, are a very good side when they're in transition, they're in that low block, and when they go, they go with numbers, Declan Rice released.
'The biggest question for me is how they're going to set up. I think the back four picks itself, he's probably going to go with Partey, Rice and Odegaard, even though Odegaard's form has been in and out.'
While Richards has been impressed by Jakub Kiwior's recent performances, he believes Arsenal have badly missed Gabriel Magalhaes' 'arrogance' and 'leadership' at the back.
'In big moments in the Champions League, you need your big players and I think Kiwior has done ever so well up until the first leg against PSG,' he continued.
'I think they've missed Gabriel massively. He's a massive, massive miss.
'He's got that confidence, arrogance and leadership that you need going into a semi-final and that could be a miss. More Trending
'PSG are favourites, we know that. They were probably slight favourites in the first leg, so Arsenal can go out there and just go for it and just see what happens.'
The winners will do battle with Inter Milan in this year's final, with the Serie A champions defeating Barcelona in an all-time San Siro classic on Tuesday.
Hansi Flick's men looked to be heading for May's showpiece in Munich as they held a 3-2 lead on the night, with two minutes of added time remaining.
But Francesco Acerbi forced extra-time with a thunderous strike in the 93rd minute, before Davide Frattesi scored the decisive goal for Inter to send the Milan crowd into raptures. Who will win this year's Champions League?

Fognini, who has not won a tour level match this year, was driven to distraction during the contest, at one point, snapping his racquet over his knee and tossing it away. Moutet, 26, went on to win the encounter 6-4 6-7 6-3, booking a round two berth against top seed Alexander Zverev. After Fognini sliced a backhand wide, Moutet fist pumped and pointed to his head in celebration. As the pair shook hands at the net, Fognini held on for a little longer than is customary. After Moutet gave him a brief glance, the former world No9 continued to glare in his direction. The fiery star then said in French "Regarde-moi, petit cochon!" - meaning "Look at me, you little pig!" There was no love lost between the duo, with Fognini sometimes proving to be a tricky opponent for the legendary Scot. Murray infamously told the flamboyant Italian to "shut up" during a heated Shanghai encounter in 2019. Fognini confirmed in Rome last month that this will be his final year on tour. Asked for his highlights at his home tournament, the world No117 said: "One is for sure the victory in the night against Andy Murray when he was No. 1 in the world. "This one is in the special place, especially here in Rome, for sure. I'd say it's top three in my career. "I live for [those] moments. My character is like that. Rayan Cherki signs for Manchester City on five-year deal

Manchester City have completed the signing of France midfielder Rayan Cherki from Lyon for an initial fee of €36 million (£30.5m). The 21-year-old moves after an impressive season with Lyon in which he scored 12 goals and provided 20 assists in 40 appearances. Advertisement He also made an eye-catching debut for France last week when he came off the bench and scored in a 5-4 Nations League loss to Spain. Cherki has put pen to paper on a five-year deal which will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2030. We're delighted to announce the signing of Rayan Cherki ✍️🩵 — Manchester City (@ManCity) June 10, 2025 He said: 'This is a dream for me. Honestly, to be joining a club like Manchester City and have the opportunity to make the next step in my career here is something very, very special. 'I have worked so hard for this all my life. I love this sport, and I can't wait to develop further here in Manchester with Pep (Guardiola) and his backroom staff. Advertisement 'Everyone knows how good City are – they have been so successful for many years now. The responsibility to help the team continue winning is something I want to embrace. 'I would only leave Lyon for a project I really believe in and everything at City suggests I can develop my game and help the team be successful in the future. I can't wait to show City fans what I can do.' His arrival comes on the same day City completed a deal for Chelsea's third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and follows the £31.3 million capture of left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri from Wolves on Monday. Rayan Ait-Nouri, right, was signed from Wolves on Monday (Martin Rickett/PA) All three deals have been completed in time for the players to be registered for the group stages of the Club World Cup this month. Advertisement Director of football Hugo Viana said: 'We're very happy to have Rayan at City. We want to bring top talent to the club, and he falls into that category. 'He's a player our scouts have watched for a long time, and we have all been impressed with his skill and creativity. I am convinced our fans will be excited to see him play. 'There's no doubt that he's now in the best place possible to develop further under Pep's guidance and I really believe he can become a world-class player with our support and direction.' City's latest transfer activity continues an overhaul of the squad that began with the January signings of Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov and Vitor Reis. Advertisement Tijjani Reijnders has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester City (Bradley Collyer/PA) Further deals are also possible as the club respond to a disappointing season in which they failed to mount a strong Premier League title defence and exited the Champions League before the last 16. Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders has been heavily linked with a move to City from AC Milan as Guardiola looks to bolster his midfield options following this summer's departure of Kevin De Bruyne. In further business, City have installed former Liverpool assistant manager Pepijn Lijnders as Guardiola's new number two. The Dutchman, who served under Brendan Rodgers and Jurgen Klopp at Anfield, was available after being sacked as manager at Red Bull Salzburg last December. Advertisement His appointment coincides with that of James French as set-piece coach. French has been working at Liverpool for the past 13 years.
