Why Orlando Pirates chose Moroccan coach

Orlando Pirates supporters have finally met their new head coach for next season's Betway Premiership, and it is not Rulani Mokwena.
The chosen one is Moroccan international Abdeslam Ouaddou. The former AS Vita coach made his name in Mzansi after needing 12 games to save Marumo Gallant from relegation.
His five wins out of 12 included a 2-0 win over Orlando Pirates and a 2-1 triumph over Kaizer Chiefs.

Speaking to Radio 2000 on Tuesday, the club's media officer Thandi Merafe revealed the Sea Robbers' thinking behind the decision. Saying the 46-year-old is a diamond with a noteworthy demeanour and professionalism.
Kaizer Chiefs news: African striker and former Pirates star
'Our management has been working tirelessly to prepare the team for the upcoming season, making sure they get the right people in the right space,' Merafe said on Radio 2000 .
'We've seen how in the past they've always managed to get it right, and getting the hidden diamond. I use that term because more often than not, we bring in people that the general public doesn't know about.
'Orlando Pirates have a very keen eye and an amazing ability to unearth talent and people that are perfect for the brand. So I'm happy with the announcement of the new coach.
'I think the one match where we played against him [at Gallants], you can see the behaviour of the coach when he's under pressure, the attitude, and the professionalism. He came out as someone who is professional and a gentleman of the game, and I'm sure everyone at the club is looking forward to working with him.'
'Orlando Pirates Football Club is pleased to announce the appointment of Abdeslam Ouaddou as the new Head Coach.
'Ouaddou takes over the reins ahead of the new season, replacing Jose Riveiro at the helm following his decision to step down to join Al Ahly, after a successful three-year tenure.
'Born in Alnif, Morocco, the 46-year-old brings a wealth of experience both as a player and a tactician. A former Moroccan international, Ouaddou earned 68 caps for The Atlas Lions and enjoyed a distinguished playing career across several top European leagues. His deep understanding of the game, coupled with a strong leadership profile, positions him well to lead the Buccaneers into a new era.
'Coach Ouaddou, who is expected to arrive in South Africa towards the end of the week, will be assisted by Mandla Ncikazi and Rayaan Jacobs, Helmi Gueldich and Tyron Damons.
'Pre-season preparations will officially kick off on June 27.
'As part of preparations for the upcoming campaign, Orlando Pirates will embark on their third consecutive international pre-season tour to Marbella, Spain. The training camp – set to run from July 8 to July 20, will see the team engage in high-level friendly matches against European opponents including Bolton Wanderers (England), Pafos FC (Cyprus), Las Palmas (Spain), and Granada (Spain).'

Mamelodi Sundowns have issued what can best be described as a cryptic statement regarding the uncertain future of star forward Lucas Ribeiro. Sundowns say a lot and not much The club reiterated its commitment to advancing the development of its players, many of whom continue to attract strong interest from leading European sides as well as teams in the Middle East. ALSO READ: The Candid One? – Cardoso's true colours emerging at Sundowns Ribeiro, who was crowned PSL Footballer of the Season after a stellar campaign, has not featured for Masandawana since the FIFA Club World Cup. Reports suggest he is already in Qatar, where his signature is being pursued. 'It has always been the policy and commitment of Mamelodi Sundowns to engage and negotiate with football clubs in Africa and worldwide that are interested in recruiting and acquiring the services of the club's players,' read part of Sundowns' repetitive statement. 'The objective of Sundowns in these discussions and negotiations has always been to advance the interests of the player and the club, to be fair and just, and to contribute to the fulfilment of the interests of all parties. 'Sundowns has received enquiries, particularly after the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, from several prominent football clubs that have expressed an interest in acquiring the services of certain Sundowns players. 'Monyane should start for Bafana ahead of van Rooyen and Mudau' ex-Chiefs star

Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Mokete Tsotetsi feels Amakhosi's new signing Thabiso Monyane is ready to feature for Bafana Bafana. The 25-year-old right-back has been in good form since joining Chiefs on a free transfer. Having struggled for game time at Orlando Pirates, the defender was released, together with Paseka Mako. Both players were signed by the Glamour Boys in June. With Deano van Rooyen injured and Khuliso Mudau not playing for Sundowns, Tsotetsi says this could be a perfect opportunity for Monyane to play for Bafana. 'He did not have a good season last season [at Pirates] and he has come to Chiefs looking fit, and I think he has come at the right time,' he said as quoted by Soccer Laduma . 'He is doing well in the first few matches for Chiefs, and you can see that he is gaining confidence. 'With Khuliso Mudau not playing and Thapelo Morena out injured and Van Rooyen only making his first appearance of the season recently, Monyane stands a good chance of being the first choice right back in the upcoming Bafana Bafana squad,' Tsotetsi added. 'You can see his confidence is growing game by game. He is doing well with the game time he is getting. I know coach Broos is a coach who gives players who are doing well a chance. 'So, I think he will be considered for the national team, and it will be good for him,' he concluded. Despite Tsotetsi's comments, Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos did not include Monyane in his preliminary squad on Thursday. Cape Town surfer Paul Sampson secures spot at All-Africa Games

Seye's mission through the African Surfing Confederation has always been about building a platform for African children, not just to surf, but to dream of becoming world champion surfers and respected leaders within their communities. 'It's history in the making, especially considering that this movement is driven by an African leader for African children,' said Shafiek Khan, who has been the surf trainer and mentor to the surfers from the Cape Flats. According to Khan, while this achievement by the African Confederation and Seyer's mission has been nothing short of remarkable, there is significant financial support needed to help the children get the best chance at winning on a global stage, such as the Olympics. Khan met Sampson when he was just five on the beach and before meeting him, Khan met his brother Junaid. Through Khan's surf school, Palama Metzi, Khan used surfing not just as a sport but as a tool to understand children' lives, help them with schooling, provide them with hope and guide them towards brighter futures. 'At one point, we had more than 100 street children in the surf training programme,' said Khan. Khan went further, adopting Paul and Junaid for a few years. 'Today, we are still together and they have grown up from just boys on the beach into professional athletes representing South Africa on the international stage,' Khan said. He has called for South Africa, Africa and global leaders, sports athletes and citizens of the world to step forward to assist in the growth, development and rise of African surfers. Anyone who would like to make financial donations to fund Sampson's entry into the African Surf Tour in Ghana from September 17 to 21 where he is needed to defend his ranking, his access and participation into the All-Africa Games in Egypt 2027 and towards his fight into the Olympics in 2028, should make deposits into Paul Sampson 's bank account via EFT. Banking details are Paul S Sampson, FNB Branch Code 250655, Swift Code: FIRNZAJJ, Account Number: 99 07 115 223 080.
