Youth arrested for snatching Hungarian woman's mobile
Turi Virag Reka (25), an Odissi instructor from Budapest, filed a police report on July 11 alleging that two men on a motorcycle had snatched her mobile phone near the N-4 area in the upscale Nayapalli neighbourhood at 5pm.
Police sources said Reka, who had arrived in Bhubaneswar three months earlier to study Odissi, was walking near Nayapalli Community Care Association when her mobile was snatched.
"The theft left me panicked and worried as my phone contained crucial digital documents and two SIM cards — one Indian and one Hungarian," her complaint stated.
Reka, who has been frequently visiting Odisha since the last 10 years, also said that her situation was particularly urgent as she was scheduled to depart India on Monday.
"We prioritised her case due to her approaching visa expiration. We formed a three-member team for investigation and activated the property offence prevention and detection (POPD) unit," a senior police officer said.
Police examined footage from about 30 CCTV cameras near the crime scene, which led them to identify Rihan. They arrested him on Monday morning and retrieved the stolen mobile phone, which was returned to Reka.
"Our swift action and successful recovery of the phone enabled the foreign national to leave the country as scheduled on Monday. We are looking for Rihan's associate, who is on the run," the police officer said.

Satna suicide case: Youth held for abetment; ex-MLA's wife booked for negligence
BHOPAL: Four days after a 24-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide using a licensed pistol at the residence of former Congress MLA Nilanshu Chaturvedi in Satna, police arrested a youth from Banda district in Uttar Pradesh for abetment to suicide. Police also booked the former MLA's wife, Archana Sharma, under relevant sections of the Arms Act for mishandling a licensed weapon—the pistol, which was registered in her name, was used in the suicide. The arrested youth, Arvind Yadav, was reportedly in a relationship with the deceased, Suman Nishad. Suman, who worked as domestic help along with her mother at Chaturvedi's house, allegedly shot herself in the right temple with the licensed firearm on July 29. The pistol belonged to Archana Sharma, who has now been booked under the Arms Act for negligence in storing the weapon. According to police, Suman and Arvind were in a relationship. Her family recently arranged her marriage to someone else, which reportedly caused tension. Investigators said Arvind gifted her a mobile phone, which was earlier found by her family, leading to frequent arguments. Bangladeshi model's arrest: probe widens to include Shanta Paul's finances, friend under scanner
The Detective Department of the Kolkata police, which is investigating Bangladeshi model and actress Shanta Paul, 28, who was arrested for allegedly possessing Indian voter ID and Aadhaar cards, has widened its probe after noting inconsistencies in her statements. The officers are probing how Paul, who was arrested earlier this week, got the ID cards, besides investigating her friend and Bangladeshi national, Suman Chandrashil, whose name had come up during questioning. They are also probing whether she was passing information to some other country in return for money as she appeared to live a lavish lifestyle, travelling to places including Nathu La Pass near the India-China border, Digha, and Gangtok, where she shot reels. A native of Barisal in Bangladesh, Paul had been living at a rented apartment in Bijoygarh, Jadavpur, since 2023, the police said. Officers with the Detective Department said it was not clear why a successful Bangladeshi model and actress was using fake documents to stay in India. Paul, who is in police custody till August 8, was found to have two Aadhaar cards. Senior police officials said the first Aadhaar card was registered in her name in 2020 with an address in Burdwan. The other one shows a Kolkata address. She could not give satisfactory answers about how she procured the documents. According to a senior police officer, 'A search is on to locate Suman Chandrashil. It is a matter of concern how Bangladeshi nationals are so easily able to obtain Indian identity documents.' Police sources said that during the search at Paul's residence, officers found her friend's Aadhaar card details and an address in Behala's Anandagarh, on the outskirts of South Kolkata. According to a senior officer, 'Chandrashil is married to a Behala-based woman and it is from that address that the Aadhaar card was obtained.' However, officers said that people in the locality claimed that he had not been seen there for months. The police also reportedly found several bank documents and Paul stated during her interrogation that she was planning to open a hotel for which she intended to take a bank loan. Investigators are probing who was going to finance the project and if any partnership was involved. They will also examine the documents that Paul had submitted to the bank for the loan. Paul, who has reportedly won several modelling contests in Bangladesh, said she was working in a Telugu film and is in talks for another movie with a Tollywood star.
