The Brooklyn Nets have been making some interesting moves during the 2025 NBA offseason to get ready for a 2025-26 season that is hopefully better than what the 2024-25 campaign was. Brooklyn is coming off a 26-56 record from last year, but this offseason represents some new life being injected into the organization along with another chance at winning a trophy.
The NBA announced on Wednesday what the groups for the Emirates NBA Cup 2025 will be for the 2025-26 season, a slate that the Nets could be looking forward to as a way to spice up their season. The NBA placed Brooklyn in East Group B, meaning that they will be facing the Boston Celtics, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic, and Philadelphia 76ers as part of the NBA Cup.
While the schedule for the 2025-26 season hasn't been released yet, the NBA noted that the Nets will be facing the Pistons and 76ers at home at Barclays Center, but will be taking on the Celtics and Magic on the road. Group Play games in the NBA Cup will take happen on "Cup Nights" from Oct. 31 to Nov. 28, according to what the NBA announced in its post on X.
This group will be interesting for the Nets to compete in as each of the four teams they will face as part of the NBA Cup were in the playoffs this past season. Boston may not be as competitive as they would normally be given that forward Jayson Tatum is most likely going to miss most, if not all, of the 2025-26 campaign along with the team trading away players like Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis to avoid luxury tax penalites.
The 76ers are coming off an injury-riddled 2024-25 season, but they still have Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey while adding guard VJ Edgecombe, the third overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. The Pistons will be a solid team led by guard Cade Cunningham and the Magic could be one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference after adding Memphis Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane to a roster led by forwards Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.

2024-25 Thunder player grades: Adam Flagler

The calendar has flipped to August, which means we've officially hit the low point of the NBA cycle. The next couple of months are the driest part of the year. Everybody has headed to vacation and awaits training camp to kick off the 2025-26 season. The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to enjoy their NBA championship. They had a historic 68-14 regular-season campaign that eventually led to the franchise's first title with a 2025 NBA Finals Game 7 win. They'll enter next season as a favorite to be a rare repeat winner. To reflect on their title run, Thunder Wire will conduct 2024-25 season grades for all 19 players who suited up for the squad at one point during the year. Sixteenth up is Adam Flagler, who spent the year on a two-way deal: 2024-25 statistics: Advanced stats: Significant Percentile Finishes: Contract: Thoughts: If Flagler showed anything in his first two seasons on the Thunder, it's that he isn't afraid to hunt for his shot. The 25-year-old couldn't make an impact at the NBA level, but it wasn't from a lack of trying. He tried to find his outside shot but never could. Flagler spent last season on a two-way deal. Because the Thunder blew teams out left and right, that provided plenty of garbage time for the end of the bench to play in. He logged 37 games. The stats weren't pretty, but he gained a reputation among OKC fans as somebody who leaves it all on the court. While Flagler dominated at the G League level, he didn't translate that success to the NBA. He helped the OKC Blue win a championship in 2024 by being a score-first guard who can light it up from deep. He wasn't afforded those same looks in the NBA. His undersized frame only hindered his ability to get real minutes. There was some hoopla involved with Flager at times last season. When he was given rotation minutes, Thunder fans sighed in frustration. His quick trigger, combined with bad outside shooting luck, made fans feel like they wasted possessions. But when you're at the NBA level, you can't hesitate on your shot. Especially if you're known as an outside shooter like Flagler. The results might've been ugly, but the volume was too small to overreact to. Don't get me wrong, there's no justifying shooting below 20% from the outside, but his shot-taking process was fine. Moving Forward: After a couple of years on the Thunder, it was time for Flagler to move on. He spent the 2025 Summer League with the Atlanta Hawks and signed a training camp deal with the San Antonio Spurs. It's a fresh start the 25-year-old needs if he wants to compete for a roster spot. Perhaps his NBA championship buys him some pedigree. But if Flagler wants another chance at the NBA, he must convince teams that his outside shooting numbers were an aberration and that, instead, look at his G League numbers, where he was afforded time to get into rhythm. If Flagler can't make the Spurs, he's a textbook candidate to return to the G League. He could be a bubble NBA guy who's too good for the G League but not good enough to fit into his ideal role in the NBA. There's also the possibility of going overseas. Either way, Flagler needs a strong preseason. As simple as it might be, his shooting percentages must go up. You can only get so much leeway after shooting 19% from the outside through his first two seasons. That type of efficiency is a career-ender, regardless of the context behind it. But hey, if Flagler is near the end of the road, he carved out a decent career. He spent two seasons in the NBA after going undrafted in 2023. He was part of one of the greatest teams in league history and will have a championship ring. Most players at his spot finish with far fewer accolades and time in the league. Final Grade: D

What LeBron James Told Younger Son Before College

LeBron James is many things: NBA superstar, entrepreneur, philanthropist and even a part-time actor. He is also famously a father, and it turns out the advice he gave one of his sons before heading off the college is pretty relatable even to dad's who aren't the NBA's all-time leading scorer. That is according to Bryce James, a freshman for the Arizona Wildcats basketball team who met with reporters this week for the first time since joining the squad. 'Just working hard, coming in here, doing what you do best and also just like making sure even if you're not having good days, always have a stay positive mentality,' Bryce told the media in Tucson (per local reporter Eliav Gabay). 'Maybe you missed a shot, don't hang your head down. Always keep your head up. Just push through, stay positive.' That approach has served Papa James well, so it sounds like something Bryce will be able to use as the Wildcats pursue a spot in the NCAA Tournament (which is staying at 68 teams for now at least). He arrived at Arizona with less fanfare than his other brother, LeBron James Jr., who goes by Bronny. While Bronny was a four-star prospect among the top 30 players in the country in the class of 2023 per 247Sports, Bryce is a three-star prospect ranked No. 284 among all players and 46th among shooting guards. Arizona lists him at 6-5, 195, and notes in his bio he averaged eight points and four rebounds per game last season as Los Angeles Sierra Canyon High School won the Division I state championship in the CIF. Bronny James spent one season at USC before being selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. He made his NBA debut last fall and also spent time with the Lakers' G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers. Trail Blazers' Yang Hansen will wear a new jersey number in the NBA

Chinese center Yang Hansen will wear a new jersey number in the NBA with the Portland Trail Blazers after previously wearing No. 15 with the Qingdao Eagles. Yang was an All-Star in each of the past two seasons in the CBA, the top professional league in China. He averaged 16.6 points, 10.5 rebounds, three assists and 2.6 blocks in 32.8 minutes per game across 45 appearances last season. The 16th pick also occupied No. 51 while representing the Chinese national team, most recently in the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 Qualifiers. When choosing his new number, it appears that Yang simply opted to honor his draft position this year. Yang averaged 10.8 points, five rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.2 blocks on 45.7% shooting from the field in four appearances with the Trail Blazers in summer league. He scored in double figures three times, including a 15-point effort on July 15. The 7-footer is highly touted for his overall skill set and ability as a player who can work down low, space the floor and protect the paint. The Trail Blazers have had him on their radar for the past two years and believe he can be a player who contributes at a high level on both sides of the court. Yang has already made quite an impression on teammates Jrue Holiday and Damian Lillard, with both intrigued by his potential on the court. His selection was met with some criticism, but it is evident that the organization is very high on him and excited to see him next season. Note: Throughout August, Rookie Wire is looking at every first-round pick and why each player selected their respective jersey number as they make the jump to the NBA. Previous: Cooper Flagg | Dylan Harper | VJ Edgecombe | Kon Knueppel | Ace Bailey | Tre Johnson | Jeremiah Fears | Egor Dёmin | Collin Murray-Boyles | Khaman Maluach | Cedric Coward | Noa Essengue | Derik Queen | Carter Bryant | Thomas Sorber
