Patna: Danapur division of the East Central Railway (ECR) organised a special photo exhibition on the occasion of 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' at the Danapur station premises.
Danapur divisional railway manager (DRM) Vinod Kumar inaugurated the exhibition on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, the DRM recalled that while India attained Independence on August 15, 1947, after 200 years of colonial rule, it also endured the immense tragedy of the partition. "The night of August 14, 1947 marked the beginning of mass displacement, with millions rendered homeless and separated from their families.
Homes, farmlands and livelihoods were lost and countless lives perished," he said.
"Remembering this grief, the country observed 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day' every year on August 14, a day before Independence Day, to honour those who suffered and to remind future generations of the value of unity and brotherhood," the DRM said, adding that the railways had transported nearly seven lakh refugees during the partition between August 15 and September 8, 1947 through passenger and goods trains.

The event, which drew a large crowd, was attended by senior railway officials, railway employees, representatives of the railway unions and passenger association members.

Tiger carcass found in Sundarbans

Kolkata: A tiger was found dead in the Sundarbans on Friday — the first reported mortality of a big cat from the Indian part of the mangroves since 2021. Tiger deaths in the Sundarbans go undetected due to the challenging terrain. According to officials, the carcass was found near Bonnie Camp, a popular tourist spot in the South 24 Parganas forest division, on Friday morning by the department staff. Nisha Goswami, the divisional forest officer, said that the tiger had probably died of old age. No external injury was found on its body. So far, it seems that the tiger had died due to old age. A post-mortem has been done and samples have been collected for histopathological and other necessary tests," said a senior official. Sources said the tiger was seen by the staff in the forest near the camp water body a few days before its death. The last tiger death officially reported from the Indian Sundarbans, as per National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) data, was that of a male tiger in May 30, 2021, at Harikhali inside the tiger reserve. The reserve-wise tiger mortality data on NTCA website revealed that between 2012 and 2024, seven tiger deaths were reported from the Sundarbans. According to sources, NTCA treats all tiger deaths as unnatural unless proven otherwise with solid evidence, such as histopathological and forensic assessments, photographs, and circumstantial evidence. Grief engulfs villages after West Bengal bus tragedy

Motihari: An air of grief and disbelief hangs over Sarsawa village, where six residents, including two women and a minor boy, were among those killed in Friday's bus accident in West Bengal's East Burdwan district. Since news of the tragedy broke, villagers have gathered at the homes of the bereaved, offering words of comfort and silent support. The wails of mourning echo through the narrow lanes. At the gate of his thatched home, Hari Paswan sat weeping inconsolably for his wife, Surpati Devi, who had died in the crash. "She promised me she would return safely in three days," he said. In another home, the mother of Paras Sah grieved with a group of women. She collapsed twice from shock and grief, having lost her young son. With his death, the family has been left without a breadwinner. Raju Sahani of Lalbegiya village, who worked as the manager of the ill-fated bus company, has been left devastated by the deaths of his wife, Mira Devi, and their 14-year-old son, Amarjit Kumar. "I have no desire to live on this earth," he said, his face etched with despair. "I have lost everything; life has no meaning now," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like A Teaspoon Before Bed Burns Body Fat - Fit Into Your Clothes Again! gofitlifeguide Click Here Undo For some, the tragedy has also left them in helpless uncertainty. Sumitra Devi recounted how her brother had travelled from Nepal, and, along with her mother-in-law and young daughter, joined the pilgrimage. All three were seriously injured and are now in hospital in Bardhaman. "I have no money to go and see them," she said quietly, her voice barely audible over the sobs around her.
