DU college professor booked for sexual harassment of minor student likely to lose job
The recommendation is currently under consideration by the Vice-Chancellor, The Indian Express has learnt.
Sources at DU said the process of termination of the professor – booked under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) – is in motion.
'The ICC has recommended that the professor be removed. The final nod is awaited from the Vice-Chancellor. Before making a decision, the administration has said that the case documents should be studied in detail,' said a senior DU official.
The survivor, a minor student, had submitted a complaint to the ICC in December 2024, alleging sexual harassment and assault. According to official DU sources, while its probe was at the preliminary stage, the ICC recommended that the accused be kept off campus and barred from interacting with students until the inquiry was completed.
Earlier this year, the Delhi Police had booked the professor. A senior police officer had told The Indian Express in May, 'He has not been arrested yet, but the police will soon call him in for questioning.' Officers said the college administration has been asked to provide all details related to the professor.
This January, after day-long protests by student bodies on the campus, the professor had stepped down from his administrative responsibilities. In a letter to the Vice-Chancellor, he had written, 'Due to these allegations, I am finding it extremely challenging to continue my additional duties.' The same month, the college had confirmed that he had been suspended for six weeks.
The principal of the college declined to respond to queries from The Indian Express.
This case adds to a troubling pattern of allegations against the same professor. It is learnt that three prior complaints of misconduct had been filed against him with the ICC in 2016, 2020, and 2023.
'Each time, the complaints were buried. No action was taken… There was always pressure not to escalate,' said an official. Student groups, meanwhile, have alleged institutional negligence in dealing with repeated complaints against the professor.

Karjat Riverbed Mining Under Scrutiny After Complaints of Illegal Blasting
Navi Mumbai: In response to complaints and a TOI report about the illegal blasting of riverbanks and hillsides in Karjat taluka, the Raigad district administration has assured that authorities will prevent the recurrence of such incidents. Following a TOI report on May 12 this year, environmental watchdog NatConnect Foundation wrote to the Chief Minister regarding a series of illegal uses of explosives, including crude bombs and gelatine sticks, in rural areas of Karjat taluka for extracting earth and rocks from riverbanks and hillsides. Local residents stated that a complaint against illegal quarrying in the Bhaktawadi and Shingdol-Ambivali areas by a resident led to retaliatory actions. NatConnect Director B N Kumar informed the Chief Minister, citing a media report. Quarry operators detonated two bombs near the complainant's residence, shaking windows. Environmentalists warned that such illegal activities could also damage biodiversity. "The Chief Minister's office referred the issue to the Raigad collector, and NatConnect followed up seeking information via the Right To Action (RTI) Act route on actions taken on the Chief Minister's mail. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Malaysians don't know about this! iOS Credit Read More Undo The collector's office instructed the Karjat tahsildar to investigate. According to a local activist, members of two local communities are primarily responsible for using explosives and heavy machinery to extract stones and rocks from these areas. Illegal activities have resulted in the felling of mature trees to create access paths for JCBs to reach riverbanks for unlawful soil excavation. Residents say the continuous blasts have adversely impacted the water level and quality in the river. The complaints say that water flows into the holes created by the blasts. It is also environmentally unsound to keep blasting the riverbanks' bottoms, said an activist. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). South Africa all-rounder Prenelan Subrayen reporterd for suspect bowling action
New Delhi [India], August 20 (ANI): South Africa's spin bowling all-rounder Prenelan Subrayen has been reported for a suspect bowling action after the conclusion of the first ODI against Australia in Cairns on International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday said that 'the match officials' report cited concerns about the legality of the 31-year-old's bowling action." ICC confirmed that Subrayen will undergo an Independent Assessment of his bowling action at an ICC Accredited Testing facility to determine the legality of his bowling with his off-spin, returned with figures of 1/46 in his 10-over spell. His sole scalp was of unrelenting swashbuckler Travis Head, and he played his part in setting up South Africa's imposing 98-run victory. The series opener marked Subrayen's ODI debut two months after he earned his maiden Test cap against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo. A player is allowed to extend their elbow by an amount of 15 degrees between their arm reaching the horizontal and the ball being released. According to ESPNcricinfo, this isn't the first instance of Subrayen finding himself under scrutiny for his bowling action. In December 2012, Cricket South Africa (CSA) placed him under rehabilitation when his action was deemed illegal after two separate independent tests. He resumed his bowling in January 2013 after undergoing remedial work and re-testing. During the Champions League T20 tournament in India in 2014, Subrayen was reported. In November 2015, he was reported once again for his bowling action and was eventually suspended after his arm was found to exceed 15 degrees. In Jnauary 2016, he failed the re-assessment test and finally gained clearance at the CSA's High Performance Centre in March 2016. It is yet to be seen if South Africa will continue with Subrayen in the remaining two fixtures. The second ODI will be played on August 22, and the series, as well as South Africa's white-ball tour of Australia, will conclude on August 24 in Mackay. (ANI)
