Ajmer: Heavy rainfall in the city Wednesday evening led to multiple structural collapses, including a portion of the historic Ajmer dargah's ceiling, exposing serious infrastructural concerns and triggering backlash against authorities.
The city received over 54mm of rain, resulting in one death and multiple injuries.
A man died when an SBI bank wall collapsed, burying him under debris, while two others were injured. The other wall collapse incident at the dargah, which occurred on the sixth day of Muharram, fortunately saw no casualties as the area was deserted due to the downpour.
The dargah collapse has sparked widespread outrage among religious leaders and devotees.
Syed Sarwar Chishti, Secretary of the Anjuman Syedzadgan Committee, blamed the dargah Committee's "institutional apathy" for the deteriorating condition of the centuries-old shrine.
"Not a single audit of the structure was carried out ahead of the monsoon," Chishti said, noting that the committee, meant to comprise nine members, hasn't been constituted for three years.
Dargah priest Syed Daniyal Chishti claimed that maintenance requests had been ignored for years, including repairs to leaking spiritual chambers.
The dargah committee's CEO, Bilal Khan, was unavailable for comment.
This incident follows a 2020 collapse of a historic lightning tower at the shrine, highlighting a pattern of maintenance issues at the religious site. Religious leaders are now calling for management changes to ensure better preservation of the historic shrine and safety of devotees.
The heavy rainfall severely disrupted city life, with widespread waterlogging causing vehicles to float in several areas.
The SP office was flooded and multiple wall collapses were reported across the city, including at Bhagchand Ki Kothi and the Roadways bus stand.
Former RTDC chairman Dharmendra Rathore criticised the municipal corporation's monsoon preparedness, pointing out that the city was underwater during the first significant rainfall. The situation at JLN Hospital was equally concerning, with leaking roofs and power outages affecting patient care.

Flood-like situation in parts of Rajasthan after heavy rain
Jaipur, Jul 29 (PTI) Heavy rains in Rajasthan have led to a flood-like situation and rivers are in spate in many districts due to which, gates of various dams had to be opened, the weather department said on Tuesday. Villages in low-lying areas downstream of the swollen rivers have been submerged. Rivers in several districts, including Kota, Bundi, Jhalawar, Dholpur and Tonk, are overflowing following heavy downpour. The state meteorological department has issued a rain alert in 29 districts. Amid a warning of heavy rains, schools were closed in 14 districts on Tuesday. The Baran-Jhalawar highway is also closed due to the overflowing Parwan river. Many villages in near Bhawani mandi in Jhalawar district have been submerged due to the flooding of the Rewa river. The Jhalawar collector and SP said they had to go to the affected areas on a tractor. In Bundi, Udaipur, and Dausa, schools, houses and roads have been damaged in rain-related incidents. Two rooms of Government Senior Secondary School in Peepla Gram Panchayat, Kotda, Udaipur, collapsed on Monday night. At 8.30 am on Tuesday, light to heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms was recorded in the last 24 hours at many places in east Rajasthan. Very light rainfall was recorded at some places in north Rajasthan. The highest rainfall in the state was recorded at Atru (Baran) at 109 mm. The highest maximum temperature was recorded at Sriganganagar at 40.3 degrees Celsius. The lowest minimum temperature was recorded at Sirohi at 20.5 degrees Celsius. Average humidity in the air was recorded between 70 and 100 per cent in most parts of the state. Police form Eluru Disaster Response Force amid rising Godavari flood levels
Eluru district police have constituted the Eluru Disaster Response Force (EDRF) to undertake rescue and rehabilitation operations during floods, heavy rains and other natural calamities. The newly-formed force comprises police personnel from various cadres trained in flood rescue techniques, including operations in canals, streams, and the Godavari. 'With the Godavari flood level on the rise, an alert has been issued across the district. We are coordinating closely with the Central Water Commission (CWC), Irrigation, Revenue, Fisheries departments, village sarpanches, and community heads,' said Eluru Superintendent of Police K. Pratap Shiva Kishore. Police have been instructed to regularly collect updates on rainfall, water levels at Bhadrachalam, outflows from the Taliperu Project, and rainfall data in catchment areas in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.'Our personnel have been trained in swimming, flood rescue, and managing cyclone shelters. The EDRF aims to be the first responder during disasters,' the SP added. Papikondalu Tour Suspended Due to rising water levels, the popular Papikondalu river tour has been temporarily suspended, confirmed Polavaram DSP M. Venkateswara Rao. Fishermen and locals have been cautioned against entering the river in countryboats. Control rooms along the river bund are actively monitoring boat movement and the situation in vulnerable areas. 'At the recent flood preparedness meeting, we reviewed boat availability, deployment of expert swimmers, strengthening river bunds, arranging sandbags, cyclone shelter readiness, medical teams, and patrols in flood-prone villages,' the SP said. Currently, the Godavari's flood level has reached 28 metres at the Polavaram project, with nearly two lakh cusecs being discharged downstream. While there is no immediate threat to the Agency mandals, residents in low-lying areas have been advised to move to safer locations.
