Activist Sonam Wangchuk Threatens Self-Immolation Over Ladakh Statehood Demand
In a video statement through which he is purportedly encouraging self-immolation, activist Sonam Wangchuk has said he is ready to set himself on fire over statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. In his message, released two months ago, he claimed that Ladakhis are upset over the 15-year domicile policy.
Calling for a protest to send a message to the Centre before the next round of talks, Wangchuk said the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) should write to the central government asking if the sixth schedule or statehood will be discussed. If there is no response, it is implied that the Centre is delaying the matter until the code of conduct for council elections comes into force, he said in his message that was uploaded to YouTube two months ago as per the time stamp.
He alleged that without the sixth schedule, Ladakhi tribals will be a minority like in Tripura. He said he was offered a BJP ticket and a ministerial position in 2019 but he refused.

Wangchuk further alleged that he is being harassed as two infrastructure projects — a Rs 10-crore one by GAIL and another Rs 4-crore one by Coal India — were cancelled due to government pressure as they to be undertaken by his institution, Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL).
He purportedly suggested an agitation on the lines of the 'Arab Spring" if the government is unwilling to grant the sixth schedule. In the video, he also asked for suggestions on a venue for self-immolation or death through hunger strike — proposing the home minister's residence, Parliament, the UN Office in New York as options.
According to top government sources, however, Wangchuk's video message and appeal show that he is frustrated as he has failed to provoke ABL leaders and others against the domicile policy. His messages have become increasingly provocative over time, the sources said.
The sources said he has repeatedly been trying to convince some supporters to commit self-immolation, similar to protests in Tibet. Sonam is exploiting the leadership vacuum and positioning himself as the face of the Ladakh agitation after Thustan Tsewang's resignation. He is exploiting Ladakh's geopolitical location and proximity to hostile borders, and his provocative speeches may be exploited by enemy countries.
WHAT ARE THE PROTESTS OVER LADAKH STATEHOOD ISSUE?
A three-day hunger strike jointly organised by the KDA and LAB seeking statehood and sixth schedule demands ended with a massive rally on Monday, with participants warning to intensify their agitation if the Centre continues its 'delaying tactics" to hold fresh round of talks with them.
Leaders of both the groupings, including LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay and Wangchuk, KDA co-chairmen Asgar Ali Karbalai and Qamar Ali Akhoon, and Ladakh MP Mohammad Haneefa Jan led from the front. Thousands, including religious leaders and hill council members, marched through the town chanting slogans in favour of statehood, Sixth Schedule, Public Service Commission and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil — the four major demands for which the KDA and the LAB are jointly spearheading the agitation over the past four years and have held several rounds of talks with the High Powered Committee (HPC) of ministry of home affairs.
The participants also raised slogans like 'Hindustan Zindabad' and 'Hum bheek nahi apna haq maangte' (We do not beg for alms, we demand our rights), following which the leaders of the two bodies addressed the gathering and accused the government of forcing them to come on the roads by delaying the talks.
'This is a historic rally and a powerful message that the people of Ladakh are united in support of the four demands. We have started the fresh protest from Kargil but it will not be restricted to this district alone but will be taken to every nook and corner of Ladakh if the government does not show its willingness to continue the dialogue and address our concerns," Dorjay said. 'We are in agitation for a long time now and if the government of India calls off the talks, we have no option but to intensify the struggle," he said.
Karbalai said the core group of both groups will meet later in the day to chalk out the future course of action. 'We have already decided to intensify our agitation as the government had promised to hold the next round of talks within one month after our last meeting in May. They are not showing seriousness," he said.

HC imposes cost of Rs 5L on HS Gour varsity, asks for fresh appointments
Bhopal/Jabalpur: The MP high court imposed a cost of Rs 5 lakh on Harisingh Gour Central University, Sagar, for "utterly illegal and arbitrary" appointment of assistant professors in the university and said the university will deposit the "exemplary cost" within 45 days. The HC stated that the university will be at liberty to recover the amount from members of the executive council who participated in its meeting on Nov 14, 2022. The court also set aside the decision taken in the 2022 meeting and restored an earlier decision of the executive council taken in Feb 2020 and said a fresh list for appointment of assistant professors be made according to this decision. The amount of cost received from the university will be divided among MP Police Welfare Fund (Rs 2,00,000.00), National Defence Fund (Rs 1,00,000.00), Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (Rs 1,00,000.00) MP State Legal Services Authority (Rs 50,000.00) and High Court Bar Association, Jabalpur (Rs 50,000.00). Allowing a petition filed by Dr Deepak Gupta from Sagar, the bench of Justice Vivek Jain said appropriate cost needs to be imposed upon the university in defeating the rights of the left-out candidates and trying to protect and save illegally selected candidates. Therefore, an exemplary cost of Rs 5.00 lakh is imposed jointly on respondents the VC and secretary. Dr Gupta in his petition said that in 2010, vacancies were advertised for appointment of assistant professors without mention of vacancies. Later, a modified advertisement was issued in which 76 vacancies were advertised. However, the appointment of 156 candidates was made. A petition challenging the selection process filed in the MP high court. In the year 2017, the high court quashed the appointments and ordered fresh appointments in a transparent manner. The executive council of the university decided in Feb 2020 to prepare a fresh list of appointees but in 2022, the executive council changed the decision. The court held that the decision taken in the 2022 meeting of the executive council was illegal and arbitrary and asked the university administration to complete the process of fresh appointments within 3 else the assistant profs concerned would cease to be in the job from Nov 15, 2025. Oppn-ruled states cry foul as Andhra Pradesh gets semiconductor project
Synopsis The Union Cabinet's approval of a semiconductor facility in Andhra Pradesh has sparked controversy, with Opposition-ruled states alleging biased investment allocation towards NDA-governed regions. Telangana claims it offered prime land and subsidies, while Karnataka suggests investors were diverted to BJP-led states after expressing initial interest in their state. New Delhi: The Union Cabinet's nod for a semiconductor facility in Andhra Pradesh has triggered a political controversy, with Opposition-ruled states accusing the Centre of weaning away investments and directing them to NDA-ruled states. The Centre's nod to a semiconductor manufacturing facility by Advanced System in Package Technologies Private Limited with an expected investment of ₹1,500 crore in Andhra Pradesh under Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has run foul of Opposition-ruled states. Telangana's industries and IT minister Sridhar Babu Duddilla had stated on X, "The Telangana government has done everything a proactive state should do, from allotment of 10 acres of prime land at Maheshwaram to all subsidies being approved... The company has been waiting only for the India Semiconductor Mission approval. Yet, in a baffling display of bias, the Union Cabinet has greenlit a similar project in Andhra where not even a single acre of land has been allotted... A state with ready infrastructure, investor commitment and a clear execution plan has been sidelined in favour of an unprepared proposal existing only on paper."Andhra government sources, however, told ET that the state offered "superior package, including better-priced land and fast-track approvals".Karnataka minister MB Patil told ET: "Several players came to Karnataka and were quite eager to invest here but when they went to Delhi they were diverted to BJP-ruled states." Earlier, in an interview to this correspondent, Kerala minister P Rajeev said that the Centre had withdrawn permission given to a GIFT city in the state.
