Oppn-ruled states cry foul as Andhra Pradesh gets semiconductor project
The Union Cabinet's approval of a semiconductor facility in Andhra Pradesh has sparked controversy, with Opposition-ruled states alleging biased investment allocation towards NDA-governed regions. Telangana claims it offered prime land and subsidies, while Karnataka suggests investors were diverted to BJP-led states after expressing initial interest in their state.
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet's nod for a semiconductor facility in Andhra Pradesh has triggered a political controversy, with Opposition-ruled states accusing the Centre of weaning away investments and directing them to NDA-ruled states.
The Centre's nod to a semiconductor manufacturing facility by Advanced System in Package Technologies Private Limited with an expected investment of ₹1,500 crore in Andhra Pradesh under Indian Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has run foul of Opposition-ruled states.
Telangana's industries and IT minister Sridhar Babu Duddilla had stated on X, "The Telangana government has done everything a proactive state should do, from allotment of 10 acres of prime land at Maheshwaram to all subsidies being approved... The company has been waiting only for the India Semiconductor Mission approval. Yet, in a baffling display of bias, the Union Cabinet has greenlit a similar project in Andhra where not even a single acre of land has been allotted... A state with ready infrastructure, investor commitment and a clear execution plan has been sidelined in favour of an unprepared proposal existing only on paper."Andhra government sources, however, told ET that the state offered "superior package, including better-priced land and fast-track approvals".Karnataka minister MB Patil told ET: "Several players came to Karnataka and were quite eager to invest here but when they went to Delhi they were diverted to BJP-ruled states."
Earlier, in an interview to this correspondent, Kerala minister P Rajeev said that the Centre had withdrawn permission given to a GIFT city in the state.

Omar Abdullah (File photo) SRINAGAR: Chief minister Omar Abdullah decried Friday the practice of tying terror attacks to J&K's political fate and asserted that Pakistan should not be allowed to influence it through terrorism, a day after Supreme Court observed that 'incidents like Pahalgam' must be considered when deciding on statehood. 'Will the killers of Pahalgam and their masters in the neighbouring country decide whether we will be a state?' Omar said in his Independence Day speech, his first since taking office last Oct and the first by a CM since Article 370's abrogation and J&K's conversion into a Union territory Aug 2019. Speaking at Srinagar's Bakshi Stadium, Omar termed SC's reference to Pahalgam 'unfortunate' and asked: 'What kind of justice is it? Every time we are close to statehood, they will do something to sabotage it. Is this fair? Why are we being punished for a crime in which we had no role?' He pointed out that 'J&K's residents from Kathua to Kupwara' had protested the Pahalgam massacre of April 22 in which 26 people, mostly tourists, were gunned down. 'Me and my colleagues will use these eight weeks to go to each constituency,' Omar said. In his speech steeped in lament, the CM cited reports in various quarters about an 'announcement this Independence Day from Delhi' -- an allusion to restoration of statehood. 'I had hoped that in some corner of today's (PM Narendra Modi's) speech, there would be an announcement for J&K. We were told the papers are ready and it's only a matter of time. But nothing happened.' Expressing his anguish further, Omar said he wished no one became the CM of a Union Territory with an assembly -- like J&K --comparing the National Conference (NC) govt he leads to 'a horse asked to run with two front legs tied'. 'It has nothing except pain and anxieties. I have been chief minister of the state and now of the UT. The system of dual governance is not for success but for instilling defeat.' The Omar-led govt does not control key departments such as home, which is vested with Centre-appointed lieutenant-governor (LG) Manoj Sinha. Omar said he had never imagined before taking office that his cabinet's decisions 'could be altered or thrown into the dustbin', remarks seen as an allusion to the LG's overriding powers. 'I am accountable to the assembly and assembly members to the people. But the bureaucracy in the present system is not answerable to the elected representatives.'

Bengaluru: Chief minister Siddaramaiah, in his address at the 79th Independence Day celebrations , urged people to raise their voices against the discrimination faced by Karnataka in the distribution of resources from the Centre. He also urged people to protest to highlight the growing concern that constitutional bodies like income tax department, enforcement directorate, CBI, and others are not working to uphold the true values of democracy and cooperative federalism as enshrined in the Constitution. The govt had spent Rs 96,000 crore to implement these schemes, the CM claimed, adding several studies had shown women's participation in the workforce increased by 23%. He also lauded the Rs 2,000 Gruha Lakshmi scheme and free bus services for women under the shakti scheme. Giving details of developmental work done in the agricultural sector, Siddaramaiah said a land resource inventory (LRI) was conducted on 10 lakh hectares for the first time in the country and cards with details of soil characteristics, nutrient content, and suitable crops are being distributed to 8 lakh farmers. "By strengthening APMCs, we achieved record arrivals of 164 lakh metric tonnes of agricultural products in 2024-25, a remarkable increase of 447%, which is the highest in the history of Karnataka," said the chief minister. Karnataka ranks first in per capital income: CM Karnataka now ranks first in the country in terms of per capita income, said CM Siddaramaiah. Over the past decade, the state has achieved a growth of 101 per cent in this indicator from Rs 1,01,858 at constant prices in 2013-14 to Rs 2,04,605 in 2024-25. Stressing the govt's priority towards industrial growth, the CM said 18 industrial areas covering 44,166 acres have been declared special investment regions. Investors have expressed interest in bringing in over Rs 10 lakh crore in investment, and 48% has already been processed under the single window IT platform. Saying Karnataka is already India's IT capital, and now it is stepping forward to become the world's 'Capital of Innovation,' the CM said Investment Karnataka 2025 initiatives are expected to generate over 6 lakh jobs.
