1 2 Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has asked the chief ministers of NDA-governed states to emulate the good work done by the state to eradicate the menace of child marriage for ushering in a healthy nation. Sarma added Assam's crusade against child marriage has led to an 81% decline in such cases in 20 of its 35 districts between 2021-22 and 2023-24. He vowed to eradicate child marriage completely in Assam by 2026, an official release said. Sarma added that the PM also asked senior officials to visit Assam to get a first-hand experience of how the state has done away with child marriage with relentless and concerted efforts of a dedicated police force. "The success that Assam has achieved in eliminating child marriage will now serve as an inspiration for the govts of other states," Sarma wrote on 'X'. He added that in the chief ministers' conclave chaired by PM Modi in New Delhi on Sunday, he was asked to give a presentation on the steps taken by Assam to eradicate child marriages. "The chief minister who presented the state's best practice on eradicating child marriage received approbation from the Prime Minister, union ministers and chief ministers of NDA states," the CMO added. Sarma gave a detailed presentation on how the state has managed to rein in child marriage owing to crackdowns by the Assam Police and with cooperation from the people at large. At the day-long conclave, chief ministers of other NDA ruled States also showcased their respective best practices in diverse areas, including water conservation, grievance redressal, strengthening administrative frameworks, education, women empowerment, and sports. In, 2024, Assam assembly also passed a bill making it compulsory for Muslims in the state to register with the govt both marriage and divorce. Under the new law, girls must be at least 18 years old and boys 21 years of age on date of solemnising a marriage.

Majhi to meet PM during 4-day Delhi visit

1 2 Bhubaneswar: CM Mohan Charan Majhi will embark on a four-day visit to New Delhi on Friday, where he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss his govt's first-year achievements and future initiatives. During the crucial one-on-one meeting, Majhi is expected to extend a formal invitation to the Prime Minister for his govt's first anniversary celebrations scheduled on June 12. The state govt plans to showcase several key achievements, including implementation of projects worth Rs 1.15 lakh crore and fulfillment of major manifesto promises. Notable among these are the Rs 800 bonus per quintal of paddy, Subhadra cash incentive scheme for women, and enhanced pension of Rs 3,500 for the elderly. The CM's Delhi itinerary also includes participation in the NITI Aayog governing council meeting chaired by Modi on May 24, along with attending a meeting of chief ministers from NDA-governed states. The visit comes at a significant time as the state govt prepares to mark its first year in office, highlighting its development initiatives and welfare schemes implemented during this period.
