The field includes the top 69 players over the course of the season and this includes two South Africans, namely Aldrich Potgieter and Erik van Rooyen.
The top 50 finishers at this week's event move on to next week's BMW Championship, extending their season by a week and earning them spots in the 2026 Signature Events on the PGA Tour. Following the BMW Championship, the best 30 will advance to the Tour Championship.

Of course they also have odds on the eventual winner on Sunday. Scottie Scheffler is the favourite, at 3.55, followed by Xander Schauffele at 16.10.
Potgieter is at 300.00 and Van Rooyen at 325.00 — perhaps worth a shot?

Proteas fans dare to dream with longish odds

First match of T20 series Down Under is on Sunday. Sports betting sites are leaning heavily towards Australia over South Africa ahead of the T20I series between the two countries starting this weekend. The Aussies are at 1.47 to win Sunday's first match of the series, with South Africa quoted at 2.70. The Proteas have been sent to the unfamiliar and remote northern Australian cities of Darwin, Cairns and Mackay on their T20 and ODI tour and perhaps the bookmakers reckon they'll feel isolated and disorientated. There's home-ground advantage and then there's home-ground advantage in the platteland. Imagine the Aussies being sent to play in Upington, Uitenhage and Ulundi. The respective odds for next year's T20 World Cup – on neutral soil in India – are a contrast: Australia 5.45 to win; SA 5.65. However, avid South African fans, eternal optimists that they are, will be delighted by the opportunity to make some bucks from the attractive bets on offer. Options For example, Betway has Aussie batter Travis Head as the 6.25 favourite to be Player of the Match in Darwin on Sunday, with the shortest-priced Protea being Ryan Rickleton at 11.50. Aiden Markram – hero of the recent World Test Championship final at Lord's – is available at 12.00, while ace fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is a 17.00 shot to be Player of the Match. Several other categories might appeal to patriotic Saffers. Team with the Top Batter: Australia 1.50, SA 2.40. Team with the Top Bowler: Australia 1.60, SA 2.20. An unusual one that catches the eye involves batting prodigy Lhuan-Dre Pretorius. Will he score 50 or more? Yes 4.65, No 1.16. There are a few more in that vein. The action on Sunday starts just after 11am SA time.

Ashleigh Buhai is the only South African to have won a major in the last 13 years. Why isn't she celebrated more?

Ashleigh Buhai, South Africa's only major golf champion over the last 13 years, remains under appreciated despite her 2022 AIG Women's Open victory and impressive career earnings, highlighting the gender disparity in recognition and earnings in South African golf. Picture: The R&A. Image: The R&A. South African golf is in a strange place at the moment. LIV Golf is coming to the country next year. Aldrich Potgieter is the longest hitter on the PGA TOUR, and it's now been 13 years since a South African won a major. That last stat is often repeated, but it's not quite true. There has been a South African major winner since Ernie Els won the 2012 Open Championship, and she happens to be a woman. That golfer, of course, is Ashleigh Buhai. Now aged 36, Buhai was a surprise winner in the AIG Women's Open at Muirfield, Scotland, in 2022. Buhai also managed a second LPGA Tour victory in 2023 at the ShopRite LPGA Classic and won for the fifth time on the Ladies European Tour as she claimed her fourth SA Women's Open title the same year. As an avid golfer myself, I seldom, if ever, hear Buhai talked about on South African golf courses or clubhouses. Only dedicated followers of women's golf in SA seem to track her performances regularly or remember that incredible triumph three years ago. The men, meanwhile, are paid vast sums of money in comparison.
