Swadeshi practices will lead to national development: Bhagwat
Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday urged trainees at an RSS camp to adopt Swadeshi practices in their daily lives, calling it a meaningful step towards national development. He emphasised that individual commitment to indigenous goods can evolve into a wider social movement, eventually contributing to economic self-reliance.
'Can we resolve to use domestically-produced goods in our personal lives?' Bhagwat asked while addressing participants of Shiksha Varg camp. 'Let this resolution begin with the self, expand to our families and neighbourhoods and ultimately inspire the nation. Our country's money should stay within our borders and be used for our own progress,' he said.
The RSS chief said such an approach would not only promote national interest but also foster a deeper expression of patriotism. During the interactive session, Bhagwat also engaged with attendees about their daily routines, asking students how long they study and businesspersons about the hours they devote to work.
He laid stress that a swayamsevak must approach all activities—be it education, employment, or service—with the devotion of a Sadhak. Calling for excellence and integrity, he said, 'A student must strive to be an ideal student, a professional, an ideal professional—one who becomes a source of inspiration for others.'
The RSS chief encouraged trainees to reflect on how much time they dedicate to organisational work and how they might contribute to the nation's welfare from their present position in the society.
Bhagwat also said national progress depends not only on the government and armed forces, but equally on a conscious and value-driven society. 'It is the spirit of nationalism in everyday conduct that will truly carry the country forward,' he added.

A needless controversy over ‘Bharat Mata'
Recently, an unexpected and unwarranted controversy erupted in Kerala in connection with World Environment Day, which is observed annually on June 5. Unfortunately, it was triggered by Raj Bhavan. In Kerala, World Environment Day is widely observed every year. There is massive participation from the people, who plant thousands of saplings across the State. The day has become an occasion for the people to enrich their understanding of the environment and commitment to the cause of it. The proposal This year, the Department of Agriculture decided to conduct the inaugural function of World Environment Day at the premises of Raj Bhavan. The Governor, Rajendra Viswanath Arlekar, graciously agreed to inaugurate the event. On the eve of the function, while communicating the details of the programme to the Agriculture Minister's office, Raj Bhavan proposed that a new practice be followed and floral tributes be paid to a painting. On receiving this proposal, the Minister's office requested for more clarification. The Governor's office responded by sending a photograph of the painting, claiming it was the image of 'Bharat Mata'. Surprisingly, the image was the same one used by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during its functions. Raj Bhavan's version depicted Bharat Mata sitting on a lion and holding a saffron flag, which resembled the flag of the RSS. In the backdrop of the painting was a map — and it was certainly not the map of the Indian Republic. After some consultations, the Minister informed the Governor's office that it is improper to use and glorify such an image at an official function organised by the government. But due to reasons known only to him, the Governor insisted that the function would not be conducted without that image and with his participation. The government was forced to change the venue to the premises of the Secretariat. Every dignitory participated except the Governor. Reportedly, during the function conducted in Raj Bhavan, the Governor glorified the saffron flag-holding Bharat Mata. He argued that it is the symbol of India. He also criticised the Kerala government and all those who were not ready to uphold his concept of Bharat Mata. Under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, controversies between the Governors and State governments have taken place not just in Kerala but also elsewhere. The Supreme Court has intervened in some of these instances. Now, thanks to Governor Arlekar, even Bharat Mata has taken centre stage in these controversies. A dynamic concept Bharat Mata is a concept with deep roots in the collective consciousness of the people of India. During the anti-colonial struggle, it was used by various groups with different sociopolitical orientations to inspire and unify all sections of society in the struggle for Independence. Nobody can argue that any particular version is the 'real' expression and face of Bharat Mata. This is a broad concept. Bharat Mata has been interpreted by many according to their own concepts of nation, nationality, and world view. Over the course of time, the RSS, for its own purposes, may have come up with its own idea of Bharat Mata. Governor Arlekar as an individual has the right to believe that the Bharat Mata of the RSS is the only true portrait of the concept. Those with a particular ideological persuasion have the right to think that Bharat Mata should be holding a saffron flag. They would also appreciate finding her seated on a lion. For them, it is also befitting to have a specially drawn map in the backdrop of the painting of their Bharat Mata. As per its ideological and organisational framework, the RSS has come up with a particular image of Bharat Mata that suits its dream of a 'Akhand Bharat' and its militant aggressive nationalism. In RSS shakhas, this version of Bharat Mata may be eulogised. But conceptions of Bharat Mata are abstract and varied. It is futile to impose any one version as the only acceptable and authentic version. The matter becomes even more complicated when the RSS tries to foist its ideological and political preoccupations upon official functions. Governor Arlekar, who has great experience in public life, is expected to know this basic principle. Those who hold constitutional positions cannot show their political leanings. The dividing line between their political commitment and official responsibility should be deeply inscribed in their minds. What Nehru said The Governor, and the people who follow his ideological track, may not be happy with former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for various reasons. But Nehru must be remembered on this occasion. He wrote, 'Sometimes as I reached a gathering, a great roar of welcome would greet me: Bharat Mata ki Jai — Victory to Mother India. I would ask them unexpectedly what they meant by that cry, who was this Bharat Mata... India was all this that they had thought, but it was much more. The mountains and the rivers of India, and the forests and the broad fields... were all dear to us, but what counted ultimately were the people of India, people like them and me, who were spread out all over this vast land. Bharat Mata, Mother India, was essentially these people. You are parts of this Bharat Mata, I told them, you are in a manner yourselves Bharat Mata, and as this idea slowly soaked into their brains, their eyes would light up as if they had made a great discovery.' Bharat Mata on poster for CPI meet, party pulls it out
Kottayam: Even as the controversy over displaying Bharat Mata portrait at a function in Raj Bhavan continued, a poster for Kottayam CPI conference displayed Bharat Mata holding a national flag. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Sensing trouble, party district leadership immediately withdrew the poster that appeared on various social media platforms. The poster was brought out in connection with the delegates' meet to be held from June 13 to 15. Bharat Mata was draped in a tricolour saree on the poster. CPI district secretary V B Binu said it was not right to use the national flag along with the party symbol or use it along with party functions. He cited this for withdrawing the poster immediately after it came to his notice. The controversy began on June 5 when agriculture minister P Prasad of CPI opted out of the World Environment Day function at Raj Bhavan after governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar insisted on displaying Bharat Mata's portrait at the event. After CPI withdrew the poster, BJP congratulated CPI's Kottayam district leadership for circulating the poster and termed it as a response to Prasad's decision to boycott the event at Raj Bhavan. In a statement, BJP functionary N Hari said that the poster was the beginning of a big change and that it was regrettable that the Left party withdrew it and issued an explanation. During the freedom struggle, leaders of the movement had proudly raised 'Bharat Mata ki jai' slogans, but that is not the situation now, Hari's statement added. "They are afraid to say Bharat Mata and this fear is due to vote bank politics," he alleged. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now On Monday, Arlekar paid tributes to a Bharat Mata portrait during Goa Day celebrations at Raj Bhavan. Goa Foundation Day was celebrated at the Kerala Raj Bhavan as part of 'Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat' initiative, the governor's office said. Earlier, Prasad, who refused to pay floral tributes to the portrait, said there was no official version of Bharat Mata according to the Constitution or India govt, and the portrait at the event was widely used by RSS. Shortly thereafter, CPI announced a campaign of hoisting the national flag and planting saplings before it. On June 7, CPI hoisted national flags and planted saplings at all its branches and also raised Bharat Mata ki jai slogans. The very next day, Arlekar took a dig at the Left party saying, "Those who never thought of Bharat Mata are saying Bharat Mata ki jai. That is a good contribution. I appreciate that." The same day, CPM state secretary M V Govindan came out in support of its LDF ally saying there was no concept of Bharat Mata as it was not there in the Constitution. (With agency inputs)

BJP spreading baseless allegations against Opposition-ruled States, says Speaker Appavu
The ruling BJP and its leaders are spreading blatant lies and allegations against the Opposition-ruled States going in for Assembly polls in near future as they want to fetch votes by deceiving people, Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu has said. Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Mr. Appavu, after participating in the inauguration of the additional library in the Government Siddha Medical College, said nauseating divisive strategies were being employed by them for dividing people for the sake of getting votes. This was being done purposely by the BJP and its Governors in those States and this would never succeed in Tamil Nadu. 'The people of Tamil Nadu have understood these lies, allegations and divisive politics. Hence, the DMK-led alliance, which has registered thumping victories in the Assembly elections in the past, will repeat it again in the upcoming poll also. The BJP, on the other hand, will bite the dust in Tamil Nadu,' Mr. Appavu hoped. When asked about Governor R.N. Ravi's assertion 'Thirukkural' promoted 'sanatana dharma', the Speaker said the Governor, who was born in Bihar, did not know anything about 'Thirukkural' and its finest teachings and hence he was claiming that 'Thirukkural' was based on 'sanatana dharma'. After getting education through the British-system of education to reach this position, Mr. Ravi was criticising it and claiming that new education policy had been introduced to create 'new knowledge pool' in the country. 'Mr. Ravi and his mentor RSS are batting for 'sanatana dharma' which promotes inequality. They want to thrust Sanskrit at all levels by completely wiping out English, the link language now. As the new education policy infuses inequality in education, Mr. Ravi, BJP and RSS are in its favour as they don't want equality in the society and in education as well. If Mr. Ravi believes that British education system is a failure, he, who became an officer and then Governor by studying through this system, should resign his post without delay,' Mr. Appavu said. On the sexual assault on a teen by the security of the children's home at Tambaram in Chennai, Mr. Appavu said this incident had happened when the Tamil Nadu Government was creating safe environment for women in workplaces and other areas, free bus services to women in the city buses etc. 'The safe environment created by the Tamil Nadu Government has increased the State's share in women workforce in the entire country. An isolated incident will not be allowed to spoil the safe environment prevailing in Tamil Nadu and the culprit involved in the incident will get punishment like the one awarded in the Anna University sexual assault case,' Mr. Appavu said. The Speaker said the police was acting tough against drug traffickers and contract killers to ensure the safety of women and the children and hence the industrial investments were happening in Tamil Nadu to create thousands of new jobs as promised by the Chief Minister.
