Notre Dame RB coach Ja'Juan has high praise for Kedren Young and all of his running backs

USA Today6 days ago
It should come as no surprise the Notre Dame football running back's coach Ja'Juan Seider is praising his group, but it wasn't like you thought he would be doing on Saturday.
One of the newest additions to the Irish coaching staff hasn't been with the team long, and looks like he's going to let the players performance decide if they'll play or not. One of those guys that he believes has earned the right to see the field is redshirt-freshman Kedren Young. Seider said that 'he's a kid who's ready to play,' although he's unsure of the role that Young will have.
As for the rest of the room, one thing stood out to Seider about the unit, the fact that they all stayed despite opportunities to make more money and get more playing time elsewhere. 'It's so refreshing to be unselfish,' is how he put it, as he noted that they were all waiting their time even with him coming into the program.
Seider will have plenty of talent to get the ball to this fall, and it's hard to see any of the options not being solid choices.

New analysis reveals stunning lack of favored judgment calls for Texas A&M last season

In 2024 GASO was PLUS 11 judgment calls in their favor at home. By contrast the lowest home judgment against was Texas A&M at -14 calls. 25 total judgments calls difference AT HOME!Considering a defensive judgment call adds just over 3 point EPA per drive thats huge! Texas A&M's massive fan base can agree on one thing over the past decade-plus: the refs have not been kind to the Aggies on the gridiron, both at home and on the road. While this has been the case for nearly every Power Four college football program, the Aggies' 2024 season, which ended at 8-5, included a host of referee calls that led to momentum changes for the other team, including consequential losses to South Carolina and Auburn. It's always a slippery slope when debating the refs at any level, knowing that the outcome of each game can't be changed if a bad call is initiated, which has sadly been the case more often than not in college, and especially the NFL. Through 13 games and hundreds of snaps, noted analytics guru Dave Bartoo, co-founder of Matrix Analytical, took a deep dive into the numbers during the 2024 season regarding ref calls at home and on the road. For Texas A&M in Kyle Field, where the Aggies won all but two games (Notre Dame, Texas) last season, Bartoo found that the Aggies endured a staggering -14 judgment calls, which was the lowest in the country, and as Bartoo points out, every defensive judgment call adds over three EPA (expected points added), which equals 42 expected points for every opponents. Texas A&M lost by ten points against Notre Dame and Texas, so do with that as you will. On the road, where the Aggies only lost to South Carolina and Auburn, it was equally bad, as Texas A&M was No. 1 in net judgment calls going against the program as a road favorite, which was the case against the Gamecocks and Tigers. However, Texas A&M's defense was poor in both games, losing in blowout fashion after tying the game at 20 against South Carolina. At the same time, Auburn built a 21-0 lead before the Aggies stormed back, only to lose in quadruple overtime. Still, these numbers are pretty shocking, but I highly doubt that bias among referees exists, especially in the SEC, where nearly every team is on equal footing, even Vanderbilt. With just weeks before the Aggies take the field against UTSA on Saturday, August 30, worrying about the refs should be, and will be, the last thing on their minds, focused on setting the tone early in the year before facing Notre Dame on the road in Week 3. Certified! Former Iowa football star makes splash play in NFL preseason debut

Undrafted rookie Jay Higgins IV comes up with a @Ravens INT!INDvsBAL on @NFLNetworkWatch live out-of-market preseason games on @NFLPlus Every Iowa fan knows how good Jay Higgins was as a Hawk. Across his final two seasons at Iowa, Higgins had a combined 295 tackles, eight tackles for loss, three sacks, three forced fumbles, and five interceptions. He was named an All-American following the 2024 season and was easily one of the best linebackers in the entire country. That's why everyone was surprised when Higgins went undrafted in April. It seemed like teams judged Higgins based on his measureables, instead of on his play. Regardless of the reason, it was disappointing for the former Hawkeye star not to hear his name called on draft weekend. But he ended up landing in one of the better situations he could've asked for. Higgins signed with the Baltimore Ravens as an undrafted free agent following the draft. The Ravens have a knack for developing talent that other teams passed on, and it seems like Higgins is the next example of that. And it didn't take long for Higgins to remind everyone just how good a linebacker he is. He made his NFL debut on Thursday night when the Ravens hosted the Indianapolis Colts for their preseason opener. And with the Ravens clinging to a five-point lead halfway through the fourth quarter, Higgins did something he always found a way to do at Iowa: make a big-time play in a big-time moment. Higgins read the quarterback like a book, undercutting the route and coming up with a big turnover that helped the Ravens secure a 24-16 win. Higgins finished the game with three total tackles and two passes defended, including that big interception. It's the kind of play that can help an undrafted free agent make the roster, which is what Higgins is hoping to accomplish. It was great to see a former Hawk make a big play in his NFL debut and show everyone why he was a stud at Iowa. Hawkeye fans can catch Higgins and the Ravens play their next preseason game on Saturday, August 16, when they play the Dallas Cowboys at 6 p.m. CT. Iowa football TE named to John Mackey Award watch list

While some may choose to snub the Iowa Hawkeyes from their TEU rankings, their production and talent make that claim rather silly. Each year, the Hawkeyes trot out another playmaker at tight end who leaves an imprint on the season and is often making the jump to the NFL. This season, Iowa could see a step forward from tight end Zach Ortwerth. The junior tight end from St. Louis, Missouri, Ortwerth, will be in his third year with the Hawkeyes and could see an expanded role beyond what he has done already. Zach Ortwerth could take the next step and become a known name in the Big Ten in Iowa's offense with more targets. There is a belief he could be among the best in the nation, as he has been named to the John Mackey Award Watch List. The John Mackey Award is given out each year to the nation's top tight end in college football. Iowa has laid claim to two previous winners of the award, with Dallas Clark winning it in 2002 and T.J. Hockenson wearing the crown in 2018. In two years with the Hawkeyes, Ortwerth has appeared in 21 games for Iowa. He has reeled in 12 receptions for 187 yards and could see his 2025 totals surpass those with increased usage.
