U.S. Inflation Is at 2.7%. Is It Time to Invest in Cardano?

Key Points
Cardano is a deflationary cryptocurrency with a maximum supply of 45 billion tokens.
Cardano became popular for its energy-efficient proof-of-stake system, but that's no longer a big deal for a cryptocurrency.
Despite lackluster development, Cardano has been making some interesting moves lately.

Inflation has come down quite a bit since 2022, when it reached 9.1%. The 12-month U.S. inflation rate sits at 2.7% as of June. During the two-decade period from January 2005 to June 2025, inflation was 2.6%, so the current rate is in line with the long-term average.
But those rates are more than the Fed's target of 2%. And inflation, while normal in a healthy economy, cuts into your wealth unless you put your money in assets that generate a return.
Cryptocurrency has become a popular hedge against inflation, and especially market leader Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC). The price of Bitcoin makes it a daunting investment, though -- it costs about $119,000 at the time of this writing (July 22). If you're looking for an inflation hedge that costs well under six figures, Cardano (CRYPTO: ADA) fits the bill, with a price of less than $1. It also has an important similarity to Bitcoin.
Cardano's economic structure makes it a potential hedge against inflation
Cryptocurrencies are either inflationary or deflationary depending on their tokenomics. An inflationary coin has a supply that increases over time, diluting the value. A deflationary coin has a fixed maximum supply. Because there's a firm limit on the number of coins, deflationary coins have a built-in scarcity that can increase their value over time.
Bitcoin is the most famous example of a deflationary coin. It has a maximum supply of 21 million, and once all those coins are mined, there won't be any more released. Cardano is also deflationary, with a maximum supply of 45 billion ADA tokens. Even though it has a much larger supply, there's still a firm cap on how many tokens will ever be in circulation.
Cardano currently has a market cap of about $30 billion, putting it in the top 10 cryptocurrencies by size. It's successful, with the potential for explosive growth. Now, let's look at whether that's likely to happen.
A breath of fresh air -- in 2021
Cardano is a blockchain with smart contracts, and it originally stood out for using a proof-of-stake system to validate transactions. Bitcoin uses a proof-of-work system, and so did Cardano's main competitor, Ethereum (CRYPTO: ETH), at the time. Proof of stake is much more energy efficient and allows investors to earn rewards by staking their Cardano tokens.
Cardano also uses peer-reviewed research as part of its development process. While many cryptocurrencies lean toward a hyper-fast development approach, Cardano's team opted for a more methodical style.
Those differences from other cryptocurrencies made Cardano an exciting investment in 2021, when it gained a reputation as a "green cryptocurrency" for its energy efficiency. By Sept. 2, 2021, it was up 1,520% on the year and had hit an all-time high of $3.10.
But Cardano quickly became one of many proof-of-stake cryptocurrencies, so that no was longer a competitive advantage. Ethereum switched to proof of stake, and now Solana, BNB, Tron, and plenty of other coins use this validation method. And as you can see in the chart below, those other major proof-of-stake coins have soundly outperformed Cardano during the past three years.
Ethereum Price data by YCharts
The peer-review process has turned out to be a disadvantage, as other blockchains have been able to build more and attract larger user bases than Cardano. The total value locked (TVL) on Cardano smart contracts is $388 million, according to DeFiLlama, which doesn't even place it in the top 20. Ethereum leads with $98 billion, and Solana is also well ahead of Cardano with $10 billion in TVL.
Should you invest in Cardano right now?
It's not all bad news for Cardano. The blockchain launched its Voltaire upgrade last September, introducing a voting system for network participants to help speed up the development process. Its Layer-2 scaling solution, Hydra, improves Cardano's performance by processing transactions off-chain. This November, Cardano plans to launch a side chain, Midnight, that's designed to protect commercial and personal data.
There are still signs of life for Cardano. The fact that it's deflationary gives it some built-in scarcity that many of its competitors don't have (Ethereum and Solana have no maximum supply, although Tron does). And during the past year, Cardano is up 96%.
That said, I consider Cardano a hold at the moment. (That's the approach I'm taking, as it's part of my crypto portfolio.) I think it still has some potential, but I wouldn't recommend buying until it can string together more positive developments and attract more users to its ecosystem.

HIVE Digital Technologies Surpasses 14 EH/s Milestone as Global Expansion Accelerates Toward 25 EH/s

This news release constitutes a "designated news release for the purposes of the Company's amended and restated prospectus supplement dated May 14, 2025, to its short form base shelf prospectus dated September 11, 2024. San Antonio, Texas--(Newsfile Corp. - July 30, 2025) - HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd. (TSXV: HIVE) (NASDAQ: HIVE) (FSE: YO0) (the "Company" or "HIVE"), a diversified multinational digital infrastructure company, is proud to announce that it has surpassed 14 Exahash per second ("EH/s") of Bitcoin mining hashrate across its operations in Canada, Sweden, and Paraguay, and in the process has realized a current Bitcoin annual run rate ("ARR*") revenue of $315 million, with mining margins* of approximately 55% after electricity costs, based on the current hashprice per the Bitcoin Hashprice Index ( HIVE remains firmly on track to reach 18 EH/s by the end of summer and 25 EH/s by U.S. Thanksgiving, positioning the Company as one of the world's most efficient and fastest-scaling Bitcoin miners. This milestone marks a pivotal inflection point in HIVE's global growth trajectory as the Company leverages favorable market conditions, including rising Bitcoin prices, increasing institutional adoption of digital assets, and growing demand for AI-ready data centers. Paraguay-Fueled Growth: Over 7 Bitcoin Mined Daily, 300 Construction Workers and Engineers On-Site HIVE's three-campus buildout in Paraguay continues with focus. Phase 2 at the Yguazú site is now over 60% complete, with 4 EH/s of next-generation Bitmain S21+ Hydro miners already energized - increasing our daily Bitcoin global production to over 7 BTC, up from 4 BTC earlier this year. With full deployment of Phase 2 expected to deliver 6.5 EH/s, and ongoing development at the Valenzuela site (Phase 3), HIVE forecasts daily production to reach 12 Bitcoin per day by year-end - or nearly 3% of the global daily Bitcoin output (based on current Bitcoin Network Difficulty). "We have over 300 locally hired workers, all moving in lockstep to deliver world-class digital infrastructure at an extraordinary pace," said Frank Holmes, Co-Founder and Executive Chairman. "This is a project built on speed, precision, and purpose - think Navy SEALs meets Stargate in West Texas." Further, "The team is working 24/7 with enthusiasm and pride - not only to scale our electrical infrastructure, but to transform and uplift surrounding communities," added Gabriel Lamas, Country President of HIVE Paraguay. "This project is about national progress, innovation, and sustainable leadership in the digital economy." Global Adoption Tailwinds: U.S. Genius Act and Stablecoin Boom HIVE's strategy aligns with powerful macro trends: the global acceleration of stablecoin usage, Bitcoin's growing role in emerging market finance, and regulatory clarity in the U.S. The recent passage of the U.S. Genius Act in Washington has further legitimized Bitcoin and stablecoins as core financial infrastructure. This development mirrors HIVE's own belief in decentralized, energy-efficient digital systems as the foundation for the future of finance. Revenue Run Rate Surges to $300 Million and Climbing Bitcoin Prices to All Time High Following its fiscal year-end on March 31, 2025, in which the Company reported $105 million in Bitcoin revenue, HIVE's annualized Bitcoin mining ARR* with with mining margins* of approximately 55% after electricity costs, based on the current hashprice per the Bitcoin Hashprice Index ( has now more than tripled to $315 million as HIVE's hashrate and network rewards rise. "We're mining over 7 Bitcoin a day - clean, green, and fully funded by our operations," said Aydin Kilic, President & CEO. "Our growth is powered by cash flow and HODL - no dilution, no shortcuts. We're focused on scaling with discipline." Execution Excellence: 18.5 J/TH Efficiency Target Upon completing Phase 2, HIVE expects its global fleet efficiency to improve to approximately 18.5 joules per terahash ("J/TH") thanks to the integration of energy-efficient ASICs and advanced cooling infrastructure. "Our team in Paraguay is functioning at an exceptionally high level," said Luke Rossy, Chief Operating Officer. "We're racking miners and energizing containers in record time. HIVE continues to perform strongly in both ROIC and infrastructure cost-efficiency." * As used herein, "Mining Margin" is calculated by dividing the mining profit (revenue generated from mining activities minus power costs related to those activities) by the total revenue generated from mining activities and expressed as a percentage. In mining, the most significant expense is power costs. "ARR", as a metric, represents revenue only, and does not represent profitability. ARR is presented here as a measure of growth. These non-GAAP measures should be read in conjunction with and should not be viewed as alternatives to or replacements for measures of operating results and liquidity presented in accordance with GAAP in HIVE's quarterly and annual financial statements. Interest Rates Are More Complicated Than The Fed And 10-Year Treasury

Man carrying heavy stone with growing interest rate symbol increasing debt. 3D. getty The Wall Street Journal 's editorial board wrote about interest rates this week. They tried to explain that a change by the Federal Reserve in its short-term benchmark federal funds rate on Wednesday wouldn't necessarily improve borrowing costs. They're right to a degree, but the explanation is overly simplified and seems to miss the biggest point: how global markets, not the Fed, are the real force. Interest rates at all levels are always based on fundamental rates with an additional amount for risk. To understand what rates will be, the question is which reference value is in place and how much is added. The Journal noted that expectations are for the part of the Fed that sets rates, the Federal Open Market Committee, to keep the federal funds rate at its current 4.25%–4.5%. What the editorial board called a 'rate-cutting spree' last fall that was 'premature' set off a run-up of yields on the 10-year Treasury Note. The response was unusual; historically, the Treasury yield curve has fallen with the federal funds rate. There was a rebound in unexpected consumer inflation. 'This climb in yields coincided with a rebound in consumer-price inflation that the Fed didn't expect. After flattening through October, the consumer-price index rose 0.3% in November, 0.4% in December, and 0.5% in January. The FOMC hadn't conquered inflation by September as its members had thought. It is good to remember that, at the time, the Journal 's editorial board admonished the Fed: 'The real risk for the Fed is if it embarks on a monetary easing cycle that stops the current disinflation and causes prices to rise again.' It was a risk; they were right. 'That's critical because the rates that matter most to the economy are longer rates, especially the 10-year Treasury,' they wrote. 'Those are rates that most affect corporate borrowing and consumer mortgages.' The Broader View Of Interest Rates The federal funds rate and the yield on the 10-year Treasury Note are both critical to interest rates for commercial and consumer needs. But they aren't the only ones. The federal funds rate range is the set of interest rates that banks charge one another for overnight unsecured loans. The secure overnight financing rate (SOFR) also involves short-term borrowing called repurchase agreements (repo) backed by Treasury securities. SOFR is calculated by ongoing calculations of loan terms, so ultimately controlled by market activity. Put more formally by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, 'The SOFR is calculated as a volume-weighted median of transaction-level tri-party repo data collected from the Bank of New York Mellon as well as GCF Repo transaction data and data on bilateral Treasury repo transactions cleared through FICC's DVP service, which are obtained from the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Financial Research (OFR).' The New York Fed publishes the SOFR on its website at about 8:00 a.m. Eastern time. SOFR is important as a base for adjustable-rate mortgages, private student loans, home equity lines of credit, and many commercial real estate mortgages. While the Fed has indirect influence on it, SOFR is based on market-driven forces. As for the 10-year Treasury, it is also driven by market forces. The Trump administration has known all along how important the 10-year Treasury is. In February, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in an interview on Fox Business, 'In my talks with [the president], he and I are focused on the 10-year Treasury [yield].' But the administration has tried to convince and nudge the banking industry to invest more in 10-year Treasury Notes. The intent was to increase demand that, in turn, would boost price and push down yields, which move inversely to price. And then there is the 5-year Treasury, which is important to banks that are lending on properties or uses that will likely try to refinance within three to five years, like may commercial real estate businesses. It also follows market forces. Interest Rate Complexities Trying to understand how interest rates work and their potential impact on the economy, companies, and individuals is critical to survive financially. What will happen next is impossible to know. As the Journal wrote of Fed monetary policy moves: 'If short rates fall but long rates rise in anticipation of higher inflation, the economic gain Mr. Trump expects won't occur. What the President needs is a Fed that investors believe favors low inflation and a sound and stable dollar. That will yield lower long-bond and mortgage rates over time.' However, the uncertainty and distrust the administration has created globally is likely a reason the 10-year yield stays up. With tariffs still creating concern about their potential impact on inflation and Trump pushing for faster economic growth (which usually means higher inflation), it also seems unlikely that a broad set of investors will assume low inflation is going to be a direct goal.
