A wellness expert reveals that combining certain fruits in smoothies may hinder the absorption of beneficial flavonoids.
Smoothies are the current breakfast obsession for both millennials and Gen Z. It's indeed a nutritious breakfast option, which requires very little time to make. While some people like to throw in their leafy greens, veggies, and fruits together, others opt for yogurt and fruits.
Berry smoothies are the rage nowadays, and people often add a banana to them for more sweetness and texture. But guess what? You are not supposed to pair blueberries with a banana! Surprised?
Amy Shah, M.D., a double-board-certified doctor and wellness expert trained at Cornell, Harvard, and Columbia, specializes in food allergies, hormones, and gut health, has now explained why mixing blueberries with bananas may not be a good idea.
Blueberries and bananas

'Blueberries are my favorite fruit because they have fiber, they have vitamin C, and they are full of manganese and B6. Honestly, these are one of the biggest sources of flavonoids in our diet, and they are so good for our brain. In fact, they improve the health of your brain in an hour,' Dr. Shah said, in a video shared on Instagram.
But if you mix them with a banana, that's where the problem begins. If you make a smoothie like a lot of people do, a banana and blueberry smoothie. The problem is that bananas have an enzyme called PPO, and this actually breaks down the flavonoids. So if you leave them there, there will be a composition of flavonoids,' she

'We were really surprised to see how quickly adding a single banana decreased the level of flavanols in the smoothie and the levels of flavanols absorbed in the body. This highlights how food preparation and combinations can affect the absorption of dietary compounds in foods,' lead author Javier Ottaviani, director of the Core Laboratory of Mars Edge, which is part of Mars, Inc., and an adjunct researcher with the UC Davis Department of Nutrition, said in a statement.

Published in the American Heart Association journal Circulation, the study, titled 'Experiences of Stalking and Obtaining a Restraining Order Are Associated With Onset of Cardiovascular Events in Women: A Prospective Analysis in the Nurses' Health Study II', found that women who have been stalked face a 41 per cent higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease, including heart attacks and strokes. The study highlighted that for women who obtained a restraining order, often a marker of severe and sustained violence, the risk increased by 70 per cent. Led by US-based researchers, the study analysed 20 years of data from 66,270 women, average age 46, identifying stalking as a serious yet often overlooked risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD), including heart attacks and strokes. The risks stayed high even after accounting for factors like smoking, BMI, diabetes, high blood pressure, childhood abuse, and depression. Why would stalking affect the heart? The study reveals, stalking may not always involve physical harm, but it can cause chronic psychological distress such as fear, anxiety, and hypervigilance that disrupts the nervous system, damages blood vessel function, and triggers harmful stress responses. Over time, these biological and behavioural effects can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Restraining orders and higher health risks A restraining order is a legal document designed to keep a perpetrator away from the victim. According to the study, while it can help prevent further violence, obtaining one often means the person has already faced severe and sustained harassment or abuse, experiences that can leave long-lasting effects on mental and physical health. The study authors emphasised that stalking is often seen as less serious but can be chronic and damaging. According to them, experts urge women to seek both legal protection and medical care. If you have a history of stalking or severe harassment, it's important to monitor heart health regularly, manage stress, and get support from counselling or advocacy services. Prevention, early intervention, and raising awareness can help reduce both violence and its long-term health consequences. 'Overall, our findings highlight the urgent need to consider violence against women, a prevalent yet underexplored risk factor for CVD, in understanding women's health and orienting priorities for public health interventions,' the researchers said in the study. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru have identified specific genetic mutations in the currently circulating 2.3.4.4b clade that may be increasing its potential to infect people. 'This clade has infected many mammalian species and is adapting to [non-human] mammals, which is a concern for human adaptation…It is panzootic, causing unprecedented mortality in birds and mammals, along with several sporadic human infections,' Kesavardhana Sannula, assistant professor in IISc's Department of Biochemistry, who led the study, said. H5N1's surface proteins — type 5 haemagglutinin (H5) for cell entry and type 1 neuraminidase (N1) for viral spread — are key to its infectivity. When the virus jumps to a new host, mutations in its genome can help it survive, and sometimes thrive, in the new environment. The IISc team set out to examine whether the 2.3.4.4b clade was evolving proteins that could make the leap to humans easier — and which animal hosts might be accelerating that shift, IISc said Tuesday. Using computational tools, the team analysed nearly 43,000 protein sequences: 7,000 from birds, 820 from non-human mammals, and 35,000 from human influenza strains H1N1 and H3N2.
