Nine Inch Nails Play Live Rarities at Tour Kickoff in Dublin
During their Sunday evening show, Nine Inch Nails kicked off their concert with Trent Reznor performing With Teeth cut 'Right Where It Belongs' solo on the piano. It was the first time sine 2009 that he's played the song live, and it turned into a medley with The Fragile track 'Somewhat Damaged.'

With the full band on stage, they began reworked versions of 'Ruiner' and 'Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now),' both of which have not been played in 16 years. With opening act Boys Noize later in the show, they did Year Zero's 'Vessel,' Hesitation Marks single 'Came Back Haunted' and the How to Destroy Angels track 'Parasite.' All three songs had also been off the set list for many years.
Of course, Nine Inch Nails' featured a number of their massive, arena-worthy hits alongside these deep cuts and live rarities. The band tore though songs like 'Wish,' 'March of the Pigs,' and 'Closer' as well as a cover of David Bowie's 'I'm Afraid of Americans.'
Nine Inch Nails' last album releases were Ghosts V: Locusts and Ghosts VI: Together, a pair of albums released in 2020. They last toured in 2022. Reznor and bandmate Atticus Ross, who joined the band officially in 2016, have been pretty focused on their successful and popular movie scores. Last year, they worked with Luca Guadagnino twice, providing original music for his films Queer and Challengers. Their current touring opening act Boys Noize released a remix album of the Challengers score.

Foo Fighters have a new drummer: the former percussionist for Nine Inch Nails. Nine Inch Nails have a new drummer: The former sticksman for Foo Fighters. Foo Fighters fired its new drummer Josh Freese this year, just two years into his tenure behind one of the most coveted thrones in rock following the death of Taylor Hawkins in 2022. The band quickly announced it had a replacement ready in Ilan Rubin, the touring and session vet who most recently played in Nine Inch Nails. At 32, Rubin was the youngest musician inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020, and spent 16 years with the band. It's unclear if Rubin is permanent addition to the band or a touring member, but the Foos have dates booked in Indonesia on Oct. 2, followed by Singapore, Japan and Mexico City. They recently released 'Today's Song,' its first new music since 2023, to celebrate the band's 30th anniversary. 'Over the years, we've had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak,' Grohl said in a note about the new song. 'Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can't go it alone.' Freese, however, did not look long for new work. Nine Inch Nails, who had a sudden vacancy behind the kit just a week before its extensive 'Peel It Back' North American Tour began, announced they had re-hired Freese, who performed with the band from 2005-2008. The band posted a photo of Freese, captioned 'Let's f- go,' acknowledging the hire. Freese also posted a note about returning to the NIN fold. 'Leaving Nine Inch Nails at the end of 2008 was one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. My wife and I were expecting our third child, and I knew I needed to step away from life on the road to be home with my family,' he said. 'NIN was a band that left me walking off stage every single night thinking, 'That was incredible. We absolutely crushed it' ...That level of intensity, pride, and satisfaction after each show is something I've rarely experienced anywhere else. Now, being back on tour with Trent and the crew—helping them do what they do best night after night—is something I'm incredibly excited about.' This drummer swap must come as a happy relief for both acts with big tours impending. Now if Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham can truly re-connect, we'll be in a golden age for peaceful rock reunions.

Jason Schwartzman, Luca Guadagnino spotted filming OpenAI movie in S.F. park
' Artificial,' the forthcoming film about San Francisco company OpenAI, has been filming around the city this week, and fans have been running into the production crew all over town. The $40 million project follows CEO Sam Altman's firing and rehiring at the artificial intelligence company in 2023. The drama is helmed by ' Challengers ' director Luca Guadagnino and stars Andrew Garfield (' The Social Network ') as Altman, Mill Valley-raised Monica Barbaro (' A Complete Unknown ') as former Chief Technology Officer Mira Murati and Ike Barinholtz ('The Studio') as tech billionaire Elon Musk. Scenes were filmed at Dolores Park on Wednesday, July 30, according to a Reddit user who shared photos of Yura Borisov (' Anora ') and Jason Schwartzman (' Mountainhead ') filming a scene on a bench. In the photos, Borisov wore a grey T-shirt and long necklace, both featuring the OpenAI logo, while Schwartzman was dressed in a red hoodie. Guadagnino was also spotted at the park. Other social media users reported seeing filming notices from the company Eternal Leo Productions around the park listed for Tuesday, July 29, through Thursday, July 31. Notices were also spotted in North Beach and the Marina District. Various casting calls for stand-in roles in 'Artificial' were found online for actors including Barinholtz and Cooper Hoffman ('Saturday Night') — Hoffman plays OpenAI President Greg Brockman. The roles were posted last week, with the final shoot dates wrapping up Friday, Aug. 1. The Chronicle has reached out to the San Francisco Film Commission for comment. Production company Eternal Leo is located at the same Southern California address as Amazon MGM Studios, which is working on 'Artificial.' A job listing for two office assistants shared by Film SF last week confirms that Eternal Leo is shooting a feature film in San Francisco. The city has been a hotspot over the past few months, with several productions filming in various neighborhoods. Earlier this month, 'The Steel Harp' shot scenes at the Seal Rock Inn Restaurant and Golden Gate Bridge, according to social media. Little information has been released about the project, but Mayor Daniel Lurie shared a video of a conversation he had with the film's co-director Alex Thompson in which he confirms the project's San Francisco setting. In May, Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen surprised BART riders during rush hour when they filmed scenes at Glen Park Station for their upcoming romantic comedy, 'The Invite.'

Foo Fighters, Nine Inch Nails Trade Drummers
Drumming great Josh Freese was blindsided last May--and he wasn't alone--when he was suddenly fired from the Foo Fighters. On Wednesday, Freese announced he has a new gig. He's back with Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails, who'll kick off their North American tour in Oakland, California on August 6. Freese previously toured with NIN from 2005-2008. But where does this leave longtime NIN drummer Ilan Rubin, who's been with the band for 16 years? He's joining the Foo Fighters, of course. The surprising switch, confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, takes place as the Foo Fighters celebrate their 30th anniversary, and prepare to play their first concerts after a year-long absence. While the Foo Fighters haven't formally announced their new hire, Nine Inch Nails shouted Freese's return from the rooftops on social media. The drummer soon chimed in with a post of his own. 'NIN was a band that left me walking off stage every single night thinking, 'That was incredible. We absolutely crushed it,'' he wrote. When they parted ways in May, Freese said it was the first time he'd ever been let go from a band. 'I'm not angry—just a bit shocked and disappointed,' he wrote on social media. Rubin joined Nine Inch Nails in 2009, and became the youngest member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame when he was inducted alongside the rest of the group in 2020. He'll start his run with Foo Fighters with a concert in Jakarta, Indonesia on October 2nd. Earlier this month, the Foo Fighters released a new song, 'Today's Song,' alongside a letter from frontman Dave Grohl, reflecting on the band's 30-year journey.
