Nine Inch Nails Launches A Comeback With A New Top 10 Hit

Nine Inch Nails scores a top 10 debut on Billboard's Dance Digital Song Sales chart with 'As Alive ... More As You Need Me to Be' from the Tron: Ares soundtrack. ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - AUGUST 09: Music group Nine Inch Nails members Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross appear at the Disney Entertainment Showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California on August 09, 2024. (Photo byfor Disney) Nine Inch Nails has become something of a side project for Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, the only two current official members of the industrial rock group. Reznor rose to stardom with the outfit in the '90s, pioneering new sounds and showing millions how to express their angst through music, but lately, Ross and Reznor have been more focused on scoring TV and film, where they've been hugely successful, winning major honors such as Emmys, Grammys, and Academy Awards. The two reformed Nine Inch Nails to tour and compose the score for Tron: Ares, the upcoming new film in the Tron universe. The first single from that project, which was released only a few weeks before the movie itself hits theaters, brings the band back to the top 10 on a Billboard chart. "As Alive As You Need Me to Be" Arrives On July 17, Nine Inch Nails released "As Alive As You Need Me to Be," the first single from the Tron: Ares soundtrack. Anticipation for new music from the now-duo was extremely high, as it had been announced some time ago that the group was going to release music for the film under that moniker. Fans of Nine Inch Nails — as well as both Reznor and Ross — didn't disappoint. The single opens at No. 10 on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart. Nine Inch Nails Earns a New Top 10 Hit Nine Inch Nails has only ever reached Billboard's list of the bestselling dance tracks in the United States twice, and both cuts have spent time inside the top 10. In December 2010, "Closer" debuted, but it wasn't until June 2021 — 11 years later — that it reached its all-time peak of No. 5. That cut has spent just over a year on the list. This week, "As Alive As You Need Me to Be" joins it inside the top 10, but just barely. Nine Inch Nails Joins Blackpink and Madonna Three tracks debut on the Dance Digital Song Sales chart this week, and Nine Inch Nails earns the lowest launch of the bunch. Blackpink's "Jump" starts at No. 1, while Madonna's "Gone Gone Gone (Original Demo Version)" opens at No. 8. A Single Years in the Making "As Alive As You Need Me to Be" is Nine Inch Nails' first single of its own since 2018, when "God Break Down the Door" was pushed from the album Bad Witch. The group has released music since then, including a pair of albums and a collaboration with the American industrial outfit Health, but this Tron: Ares single is easily the most exciting bit of news in the Nine Inch Nails world in some time.

‘Tron: Ares' Will Have Nine Inch Nails at Their Most Industrial Rock

More than anything, folks are excited for Tron: Ares because of its soundtrack. In a first for the duo in their time as film composers, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are going by 'Nine Inch Nails' for their work on the threequel, and that means they're leaning fully into their rock band history. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Reznor said the Ares soundtrack features 'not one second of orchestra.' In fact, he went so far as to call the music not just different from the first two films (respectively scored by Wendy Carlos and Daft Punk), but one that 'takes a bigger swing for what music can do in cinema without sounding fucking pompous.' This was an active goal for the pair, who've previously worked on Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, Soul, and The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and Naughty Dog's upcoming sci-fi adventure Intergalactic: The Lost Prophet. What type of sound are the two cooking up? According to Reznor, the Tron: Ares score will be 'precise and unpleasant at times' without falling 'atonal and punishing' territory. He and Ross wanted to focus on the undertones of the film's story, which centers on Jared Leto's Ares leaving the digital space for the human world. As such, the duo keyed in on 'artificial characters' like Ares and Jodie Turner-Smith's Athena 'being infused with feelings and emotions and a sense of questioning their purpose and their replaceability, their lack of soul, in some ways.' Sounds like a lot, and given Disney's recent track record, we'll probably get to hear some of it before Tron: Ares arrives in theaters on October 10. Want more io9 news? Nine Inch Nails at the O2: 'Trent Reznor is the last great art rock star'

David Bowie was right about Trent Reznor. The Thin White Duke's ability to align himself with the best new talents in any era – from Mick Ronson to Iggy Pop to Lou Reed to Nile Rogers – let him in the early 90s to seek out Trent Reznor. Of all the hard rock musicians to emerge at that time as huge-selling, stadium-packing megastars, he did not seek out Axl Rose or Kurt Cobain or Eddie Vedder, it was Reznor who he buddied up to, and toured with. And the years have proved Reznor to be the one genuine artist (in the absence of Cobain), among them. Around the time of their massive hit double-album The Downward Spiral, a none-more-black heavyweight slice of personal demons fed through industrial metal, he could easily have just turned into another heroin casualty, chewed up by fame, and at best limping along on desultory albums with ever-diminishing returns.

Iconic ‘90s Rock Band Plays Classic Songs for First Time in Decades

Iconic '90s Rock Band Plays Classic Songs for First Time in Decades originally appeared on Parade. Even though Trent Reznor is a two-time Academy Award-winning composer, the 60-year-old still has some of that industrial angst that propelled him to rock greatness as the leader of Nine Inch Nails. And at the kickoff show for the band's Peel It Back tour, Reznor and crew revisited some of NIN's songs that made them legends in the 1990s, including some that haven't been played in decades. Reznor formed the group in 1988 in Cleveland, Ohio. Their debut album, 1989's Pretty Hate Machine, resonated with Gen X listeners (and MTV viewers who tuned in to videos for 'Head Like A Hole' and 'Down in It'). The band then achieved unprecedented mainstream success in '94 with their second album, The Downward Spiral. The critically acclaimed LP spawned 'Closer,' arguably Nine Inch Nails' most well-known song. NIN revisited another Downward Spiral classic at the start of their June 15 concert at the 3Arena in Dublin, Ireland. After playing 'Right Where It Belongs' (from With Teeth) that the band mixed with 'Somewhat Damaged (from The Fragile), Nine Inch Nails segued into 'Ruiner' and 'Piggy (Nothing Can Stop Me Now).' It was the first time that the band played any of these songs live since 2009, according to The night also featured an appearance from Boys Noize, a German dance producer who's opening for NIN on the Peel It Back tour. Boys Noise also remixed Renzor and Atticus Ross' Challengers score, according to Stereogum. The producer accompanied the band in performances of 'Vessel' and 'Came Back Haunted,' as well as 'Parasite' – from Reznor and Ross's side-project, How To Destroy Angels. The Peel It Back Tour is Nine Inch Nails' first major tour since 2022. The opening night's performance featured classic NIN tracks, including 'Reptile,' 'Wish,' 'March of the Pigs,' and 'I'm Afraid of Americans,' the song that Reznor did with David Bowie. Recently, Reznor shared a personal memory of the late music icon, recalling a shocking moment when Bowie attended one of Nine Inch Nails' shows in 1995. The admission left fans reeling. 'What a moment,' one '90s Rock Band Plays Classic Songs for First Time in Decades first appeared on Parade on Jun 16, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jun 16, 2025, where it first appeared.
