Thousands gather on Cauvery banks for Aadi Perukku fest
With a huge volume of water flowing in the Cauvery, the Tiruchy district administration had made elaborate arrangements at Amma Mandapam, Thillai Nayagam, Odathurai, and Ayyalamman ghats. Barricades and scaffolding were placed and people were permitted to take a dip with precautionary measures in place. Around 350 police personnel were deployed across the ghats to regulate the crowd.
Speaking to TNIE, S Karthik and Priya, a newlywed couple from Lalgudi said, "We got married just a month ago, and our elders insisted we attend 'Aadi Perukku' together. It is a beautiful tradition, and we felt a sense of peace offering prayers to the river that nourishes our land."

DEHRADUN: Air rescue operations have resumed for the sixth day in disaster-hit Harsil and Dharali, Uttarkashi. 1,308 people had been safely evacuated so far. Indian Army's MI-17 and Chinook helicopters, alongside state choppers, tirelessly work on the mission, navigating the challenging mountainous terrain. State Disaster Management Secretary, Vinod Kumar Suman, informed TNIE that the Limchagad bridge's completion is a major boost to ongoing operations. This vital link connects the India-China border with the revered Gangotri Dham, and its opening is expected to greatly accelerate ground operations and aid movement into the affected zones. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami is personally overseeing rescue efforts "Our top priority is to safely evacuate every person and ensure they receive all necessary support," the Chief Minister stated. "The Limchagad bridge's completion is a significant step forward." With clearer skies and improved connectivity now established, relief work is expected to intensify. Six days after the devastating cloudburst in Harsil-Dharali, Uttarkashi, the grim search for those buried under metres of debris continues with agonizingly little success.

Honorarium delays hit weather observers in Karnataka
B Honnappa, 51, a weather observer from Bhagamandala in Kodagu who has been collecting rainfall data for 28 years, told TNIE, 'The honorarium paid is Rs 30 to Rs 40 a day and it adds to nearly Rs 10,000. It is usually paid twice a year, but I haven't received any payment for the last two years.' Santhosh, 48, from Castle Rock village in Uttara Kannada, where annual rainfall ranges from 6,000 to 7,000 mm, said, 'I received a partial payment of Rs 4,000, and that too six months ago. This is the only payment I have received in the past two years.' The consequences of these delays are now visible in IMD's rainfall dashboards. 'Readers are not providing data because they are not being paid,' said Ravi Keerthi, a regular data user and weather observer from Mysuru. 'I track Bhagamandala data, which went missing for several days in July. Stations like Castle Rock, Bhagamandala, Somwarpet, and many others are showing data gaps during the monsoon season,' he said. When contacted by TNIE, N Puviarasan, Director of IMD Bengaluru, said, 'We have cleared dues up to June 2024. The pending amounts will be released soon. There have been delays due to implementation of e-office but we are working to resolve them at the earliest.'
