CII-NSTL highlights defence opportunities for MSMEs
The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Visakhapatnam, in collaboration with the Naval Science & Technological Laboratory (NSTL) organised a seminar on Wednesday titled, 'Business Opportunities with NSTL: Enabling Indigenous Solutions for MSMEs.' NSTL director Abraham Varughesenoted that the increasing indigenous content in manufacturing is essential to drive economic growth. He said that both large industries and MSMEs have a critical role to play in the indigenisation and export-oriented development of advanced marine systems and defence technologies. He identified key concerns including access to bank credit, need for strategic financial planning, procurement of raw materials, logistics, and the rapid adoption of technology. He urged MSMEs and startups to utilise the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme, which provides grants of up to ₹50 crore for the development of defence and dual-use technologies currently unavailable in India. G.K. Sahu, technology director, NSTL, highlighted the lab's continued success in partnering with Indian industries to develop and produce advanced underwater weapon systems and naval platforms, significantly enhancing the Indian Navy's capabilities. Key technologies including torpedoes, decoys, stealth systems, and battery technologies have been successfully transferred to industries, which are now manufacturing and supplying these to the Indian Navy and friendly nations. Mr. Sahu said that the DRDO's Technology Development Fund (TDF) is providing critical funding to MSMEs and startups to develop key defence technologies, fostering innovation and self-reliance in defence manufacturing. 'NSTL remains committed to empowering Indian industry, enhancing indigenous capability, and promoting defence exports,' said Dr Sahu. Satyandra Vadavalli, convenor, MSME Panel, CII Visakhapatnam, said India's defence exports reached ₹23,622 crore in FY 2024–25, supplying to nearly 80 countries, with a target of ₹50,000 crore by 2029. A projected modernisation pipeline of $160–$165 billion over the next five years underscores the scale of opportunity. J Srinivasa Raju, chairman, SIDM – Andhra Pradesh, encouraged greater private sector investment in R&D, international partnerships, and collaboration with academia.

ISL limbo: AIFF calls for meeting between legal counsels of federation and clubs
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) on Wednesday asked the legal counsels of the game's apex body and the ISL clubs to 'hold discussions' on the teams' concerns about the uncertainty over the upcoming season of the top-tier league. Last week, 11 Indian Super League clubs had urged the AIFF to urgently bring the 'current situation' of Indian football, arising out of the uncertainty over ISL's future, to the attention of the Supreme Court before which a case relating to the constitution of the national federation is pending. The ISL clubs, in a letter, said that they will have no option but to seek judicial recourse independently if the AIFF does not act on their request. The national federation has now responded. 'The AIFF, on the evening of Friday, August 8, 2025, received a letter from 11 Indian Super League clubs, collectively requesting that the Supreme Court be apprised of the current uncertainty surrounding the ISL. 'On August 13, the AIFF responded and requested that the legal counsels of the clubs and the federation meet to hold discussions on the matter and decide on further action,' the AIFF tweeted. The clubs requested the AIFF to approach the top court a day after the national federation proposed the Super Cup in September to ensure sufficient competitive matches for the clubs after ISL organisers FSDL put a 'pause' on the league due to uncertainty over the renewal of Master Rights Agreement (MRA) it signed with them in 2010. Following the July 11 decision of ISL organisers FSDL to put the 2025-26 season 'on hold' due to the uncertainty surrounding the renewal of the MRA, three clubs have either paused first-team operations or suspended salaries of first-team players and staff.
