DMK has no locus standi to question AIADMK-BJP tie-up, says Palaniswami
The campaign is titled 'Puratchi Tamizharin Ezhuchi Payanam-Makkalai Kaapom, Tamizhagathai Meetpom'.
Mr. Palaniswami, who began the campaign under the Z+ security protection announced by the Union government just days earlier, addressed people from a retractable podium atop a customised bus painted green and featuring the photos of him and former Chief Ministers C.N. Annadurai, M.G. Ramachandran, and Jayalalithaa.
Scores of AIADMK and BJP workers took part in Mr. Palaniswami's first-ever joint road show with BJP leaders, three months after the alliance was forged.
The Leader of the Opposition wondered how the BJP could be perceived as 'ideal' by the DMK when it was in its company and castigated as 'communal' when it was in alliance with the AIADMK. 'The people cannot be cheated any more,' Mr. Palaniswami said, directing his tirade at DMK president and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.
The DMK, he said, had done precious little for Tamil Nadu despite enjoying power for 16 years through tie-ups with the BJP and the Congress and under the governments of V.P. Singh and I.K. Gujral. However, the ruling party was now complaining about insufficient funds from the Union government, he said.
By implementing 'only 15% of its 525 promises' for the 2021 Assembly election, hampering the implementation of the AIADMK government's people-centric initiatives like the Amma Mini Clinic, and steeply increasing the property tax and electricity tariff, the DMK was certain to face defeat in 2026, Mr. Palaniswami told a huge gathering of supporters.
The DMK had failed to maintain law and order, he said, referring to the custodial death of a temple guard in Sivaganga as the latest instance. Women of all ages were unsafe. In contrast, the AIADMK administration was flawless from 2011 to 2021, he said.
'Rudderless alliance'
Mr. Palaniswami questioned the rationale behind the DMK's alliance with the Congress as it was utilising every opportunity to capitalise on the 'travails' during Emergency. The INDIA bloc that Mr. Stalin was talking up quite often had been rendered rudderless after the exit of the Aam Aadmi Party.
'After assuming power in 2026', the AIADMK would revive phase II of the Athikadavu-Avinashi project and bring in a number of people-friendly schemes with substantial funding from the BJP government that had been elected for the third term under the laudable leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr. Palaniswami said.
Mr. Palaniswami as well as BJP Tamil Nadu president Nainar Nagendran and Union Minister L. Murugan urged their party cadre work in unison for the victory of the alliance.
In his brief speech, Mr. Nagendran even referred to Mr. Palaniswami as the 'future Chief Minister'.
The BJP leaders also shared the podium with Mr. Palaniswami atop the campaign bus. All the senior leaders of both parties took part in the campaign that covered Karamadai, Periyanaickenpalayam, Thudiyalur, and Kavundampalayam, the areas considered strongholds of both parties.

Nishikant Dubey accuses Rahul of 'distorting' facts of 1971 war, seeks Speaker's action
BJP MP Nishikant Dubey on Wednesday accused Rahul Gandhi of using "distorted and inaccurate facts" in the Lok Sabha during his reference to Indira Gandhi 's conduct of the 1971 war against Pakistan, and has urged Speaker Om Birla to reprimand the Leader of Opposition in the House for his "habitual delinquency". In a letter to Birla, Dubey asked him to issue a "show cause" notice to Gandhi for his "questionable utterances", sources said, adding the BJP MP also sought the Speaker's permission to raise the issue in the House. Hitting back, Dubey cited a letter, dated December 5, 1971, written by the then-prime minister to US President Richard Nixon, claiming that "she had literally begged before him to use his influence to stop the war with Pakistan." The BJP MP also annexed the letter in his submission to the Speaker. Live Events He alleged that Rahul Gandhi has once again "unabashedly betrayed the public trust by twisting the well-documented historical facts", which has become his "habit" to glorify his family and declining party. The Congress leader, Dubey said, suggested that Indira Gandhi gallantly fought the war despite diplomatic, political and various other strategic pressures from the United States, leading to the creation of Bangladesh. He did not stop here and "cunningly" related this with Operation Sindoor and delivered a sermon to the present government, the BJP member said. "Rahul Gandhi has now become an avatar of rumour-mongering and recalcitrant behaviour," he charged, accusing him of speaking "incessant lies" and "distorting historical facts" not only on the floor of the House but also before various courts of law. "It is a matter of serious concern for our House and also for our vibrant democracy that Rahul Gandhi has lowered the dignity of the coveted post of the Leader of Opposition by way of putting up distorted and inaccurate facts," he said. It is a straight case of violation of the Lok Sabha Speaker's directions, he added. Dubey alleged that Rahul Gandhi has an "uncanny habit of making propaganda and false claims" even in Parliament. In the letter cited by Dubey, Indira Gandhi had written to Nixon, "I should stress to your Excellency that the people and the Government of India are determined that this wanton and unprovoked aggression should be decisively and finally repelled once and for all; the whole of India stands united in this resolve and expects that the international community well appreciate our predicament and acknowledge the righteousness of our cause." She added, "In this hour of danger the Government and the people of India seek your understanding and urge you to persuade Pakistan to desist forthwith from the policy of wanton aggression and military adventurism which it has unfortunately embarked upon. May I request your Excellency to exercise your undoubted influence with the Government of Pakistan to stop their aggressive activities against India and to deal immediately with the genesis of the problem of East Bengal..."

Superstar Vijay Launches Party App, Invokes CN Annadurai Formula To Win 2026 Polls
Chennai: Tamil superstar Vijay has launched his party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)'s official membership enrolment app 'MyTVK', setting an ambitious target of enrolling two crore members ahead of the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Unveiling the initiative, Vijay reiterated that the 2026 polls will be a watershed moment with a similar impact to the 1967 and 1977 elections that unseated the ruling parties. As part of the drive, 69,000 trained booth-level agents will go door-to-door across the state to mobilise public support. The party has also introduced a family enrolment feature in the app, with the larger goal of eventually enrolling five crore people. Coming close on the heels of the ruling DMK's ongoing mega enrolment campaign-which aims to bring 30% of voters into its fold through the 'Tamil Nadu in One Alliance' drive-Vijay made a passionate appeal to his cadre to adopt DMK founder CN Annadurai's grassroots strategy. "We firmly believe the 2026 Tamil Nadu polls will be like the massive 1967 and 1977 polls. Newcomers then unseated mighty incumbents by going street to street and house to house. I say this again-follow Annadurai's winning formula: Go to people, live with them, learn from them, plan with them," Vijay told party workers. The actor, however, has publicly declared the DMK as his political enemy and the BJP as his ideological opponent, ruling out any tie-up with either party or their allies. With the AIADMK renewing its ties with the BJP, TVK has so far chosen to go solo for the upcoming elections, though he has avoided criticising the AIADMK. This has triggered speculations of a churn closer to elections. Vijay has also promised a "share in power" if elected, but so far, no party has yet rooted for an alliance with him. Vijay is entering politics at the peak of his film career, in contrast to other Tamil stars like Sivaji Ganesan, Vijayakanth, Sarathkumar, and Kamal Haasan, who had failed to bag the Chief Minister's post despite having a celebrated career. The superstar, who has stressed his commitment to travel across Tamil Nadu and personally engage with the people, would hold his party's second state conference in Madurai next month.

KMC makes Bengali mandatory in monthly meetings amid row over language in BJP-ruled states
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken to the streets protesting against the alleged harassment of Bengalis in BJP-ruled states for speaking Bengali. Now, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has made it mandatory for its councillors to speak in Bengali during monthly meetings. A recent directive from KMC chairperson Mala Roy asked all mayoral council members and councillors to use Bengali during the question hour in future sessions. This comes after the House's monthly session last week, where a TMC councillor from Ward 49 posed her question in English. After the question was placed, Roy instructed Mayor Firhad Hakim to reply in Bengali. Roy then announced that henceforth, all KMC proceedings would be conducted in Bengali. According to KMC officials, Roy has also ordered her office to conduct all official business — including monthly meetings — in Bengali. Speaking to the media, Roy said, 'From now on, the monthly meetings will be held in Bengali. Now, even in Parliament, we will speak in Bengali. Earlier, that was not the case. The state has already taken steps so that the signboards are written mainly in Bengali, and now in monthly meetings the questions and answers will be conducted in Bengali. We will be informing all in this regard.' According to KMC sources, steps would be taken to ensure that councillors submit their queries in Bengali going forward. However, many pointed out that there had been no language restriction earlier. Sajal Ghosh, the BJP councillor from Ward 50, said, 'Why restrict Bengali to just the monthly meetings? Why not make all KMC signages fully Bengali, removing Urdu? Why does official KMC stationery still carry Urdu script?' After a recent 'Talk to Mayor' session, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said that signboards and hoardings of all commercial establishments, including shops and restaurants, must be written in Bengali, along with other languages. Last year, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation mandated the use of Bengali language on all commercial signboards, including hoardings, alongside other languages. A deadline of February 21, 2025, was set for implementation of the rule. 'The KMC authority has decided that henceforth it is mandatory to write Bengali language on top of all the signboards/signages/hoardings alongside any other languages. For this purpose, we also need to check and implement the same in all establishments of KMC (including KMC HQ, Borough Offices, KMC Health Centers, KMCP Schools),' the order had stated. A similar initiative was announced by the KMC in 2007 under then-Mayor Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya, requiring shop owners to include Bengali on signboards. However, it was not successfully implemented.
