I Drove the 2025 Hyundai Santa Cruz & 2025 Ford Maverick, Which One is Best? Here's My Brutally Honest Review
Both the Hyundai Santa Cruz and Ford Maverick catch heat from 'real truck' purists. To those folks, these compact pickups are just crossovers in disguise—unibody vehicles playing dress-up in the world of body-on-frame brutes. But is that fair?
It's true: both are built on crossover SUV platforms. The Maverick rides on Ford's C2 architecture, shared with the Escape and Bronco Sport, while the Santa Cruz is based on the Hyundai Tucson. That means unibody construction, transverse-mounted engines, and independent rear suspensions. Underneath, both pickups receive reinforced subframes, especially at the rear, to handle payload demands and add towing capability. These aren't frame rails, but they're not just sheet metal either.
Now, let's talk success. After three years on the market, the Ford Maverick is absolutely crushing it. In 2024 so far, Ford sold 131,142 Mavericks in the U.S.—a 39.4% jump from the 94,058 sold in 2023. The Hyundai Santa Cruz tells a different story, with 32,033 units sold, a decline from the 36,675 in 2023. Still, it remains a profitable niche product for Hyundai with a more premium, lifestyle-oriented spin.
So, are these 'trucks' just compact crossovers with beds? Technically, yes—but functionally, they're so much more. Both offer true utility in a right-sized package. The Maverick can tow up to 4,000 pounds, haul up to 1,500 pounds in the bed, and comes with a base hybrid drivetrain that gets up to 42 mpg city. The Santa Cruz, while more limited on base payload, offers a smoother ride, optional turbo power, and unique features like a lockable under-bed trunk and a more stylish cabin. Let's look at the technical details.
Hyundai Santa Cruz ($28,750 base MSRP)

The Hyundai Santa Cruz receives modest updates for the 2025 model year, including the addition of front tow hooks for XRT models, which is a welcome change. However, Hyundai has yet to introduce a hybrid powertrain or a truly off-road- or street-performance-oriented trim to the lineup. Built in Montgomery, Alabama, at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA), the Santa Cruz remains one of the most car-like pickups on the market.
The base Santa Cruz is powered by a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-4, producing 191 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque. Paired with an 8-speed shiftable automatic, front-wheel drive is standard, while HTRAC AWD is optional. This configuration can tow up to 3,500 lbs (with trailer brakes) and returns 22 mpg city / 30 mpg highway (subtract 1 mpg for AWD).
For buyers seeking more muscle, Hyundai offers a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that delivers 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque, mated to an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Standard with AWD, it tows up to 5,000 lbs and is rated at 19 mpg city / 27 mpg highway.
While the Santa Cruz doesn't directly counter every Maverick trim (especially the off-road-ready Tremor or street-flavored Lobo), it excels as a comfortable and agile daily driver. Its payload capacity exceeds 1,400 lbs across all trims, and the self-leveling rear suspension is a standout for hauling.
High-end trims like the XRT ($40,250) and Limited ($42,750) come standard with the turbo engine, AWD, and luxury-grade tech, including a 12.3-inch infotainment display and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster. While the Santa Cruz may feel more premium up front, rear seat space is tighter than in the Ford Maverick.
Ford Maverick ($28,145 base MSRP)
2025 Ford Maverick —

Ford gave the 2025 Maverick a significant update, featuring a refreshed front-end design and revised powertrains. Most notably, the Maverick Hybrid now offers optional AWD, and the new Lobo trim adds a street-smart flavor to the lineup. Since its launch, the Maverick's base price has increased by more than $7,000, but demand remains sky-high. It's assembled in Hermosillo, Mexico, at Ford's Stamping and Assembly Plant.
The base hybrid powertrain pairs a 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder with an electric motor for a combined 191 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent through a planetary CVT. FWD is standard, with AWD now optional. Fuel economy is stellar, rated at 42 mpg city / 33 mpg highway (FWD) and 40 mpg city / 34 mpg highway (AWD).
For more performance, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder makes 238 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic and standard AWD. The Lobo gets a beefed-up 7-speed. It's rated at 22 mpg city / 30 mpg highway, which is comparable to the Santa Cruz's turbo option. The payload for all Mavericks tops out at 1,500 lbs, and towing is 1,500 lbs standard, or up to 4,000 lbs with the 4K Tow Package.
All 2025 Mavericks include a 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen and an 8-inch digital instrument display. The Maverick also offers more usable rear seat space and a more rugged overall interior design compared to the Santa Cruz. Trims include the XL ($28,145), XLT ($30,645), Lobo ($35,645), Lariat ($38,440), and Tremor ($40,995).
Final thoughts
No, they won't out-haul a Super Duty. But they will park in your garage, fit in urban driveways, and cost thousands less than full-size rigs while doing 80% of what most people need from a truck. Both can haul as much or even more than some mid-size trucks as well.
Verdict? These are not toys. They're not posers. They're modern answers to modern problems, and in many ways, they represent the future of functional vehicles. The Santa Cruz feels more refined and upscale in higher trims but leans toward comfort and commuter duty. The Maverick, while slightly less plush, is more versatile, especially now that the hybrid AWD option and more diverse trims are available.

It's Scheduled To Open In 2027 Luxury brands are emphasizing personalization in order to keep customers coming back—and spending more money when they do. Wallet travelled 150,000 miles under Ford Edge's bonnet after it vanished 10 years ago
Richard Guilford lost his tri-fold leather wallet — stuffed with $15, his driver's licence and work ID — had turned up under the bonnet of a car in a repair shop in Lake Crystal, Minnesota A retired automotive employee was staggered after a wallet he lost more than 10 years ago turned up - having travelled more than 150,000 miles away under the bonnet of a car he had been working on. Richard Guilford lost his tri-fold wallet when he was assembling cars at a Ford factory in late 2014. He suspected it fell out of his shirt pocket and, though Richard searched 30 to 40 cars and his co-workers looked at dozens more, the leather accessory wasn't found. But last month, Richard received a message from a stranger on Facebook, claiming he had discovered the wallet — complete with the $15 (approximately £10), driver's licence, work ID and gift cards worth $275 (£200) inside - beside the engine of a Ford Edge. Chad Volk, a mechanic in Lake Crystal, Minnesota, described the find as "crazy" and was delighted to be able to post it to Richard, who lives some 700 miles away in Petersburg, Michigan. The Ford Edge, which a customer had left at Chad's repair shop, had 151,000 miles on the clock, all of which completed with the wallet wedged between the transmission and the air filter box. Speaking yesterday, Richard, 56, said: "It restores your faith in humanity that people will say, 'Hey, you lost this, I found this, I'm going to get it back to you'. Chad noticed Richard's Facebook profile listed his time at Ford, a role from which he retired only last year. Chad messaged a photo of the wallet and included the driver's licence. Richard, who has two sons, continued: "The amazing part to me was it was so protected. Think about this: 11 years, rain, snow. It was in Minnesota, for crying out loud. It was in Arizona when it was bought. Think about how hot a transmission gets in Arizona driving down the road. That's incredible." The dad said he will now treasure the wallet, which was a Christmas present in the early 2010s. The majority of the gift cards were for Cabela's, an outdoor retailer, which said they remain valid. Richard, a part-time auctioneer, also had lottery tickets in the wallet, but the numbers had worn away in the decade since he bought them. "I'm going to put everything back in it and leave it just like it is, and it's gonna sit at the house in the china cabinet and that's for my kids. They can tell my great-grandkids about it. We're big into stories. I like tellin' stories. That's just who I am," said the retired automotive worker. Yet Richard, known as "Big Red" during his time at Ford due to his red-tinged beard, had long forgotten about the wallet years before Chad's message arrived on social media. Since the discovery though, a Ford spokesperson described it as "a repair that's right on the money," adding: "Can you imagine the odds?"

Hyundai Unveils Attractive August Lease Deal on 2025 Sonata
By signing up I agree to the Terms of Use and acknowledge that I have read the Privacy Policy . You may unsubscribe from email communication at anytime. If you're considering short-term ownership of the fastest Corolla ever made, August might be a good time to take the plunge. General Motors could replace its aging van lineup with a rebadged Hyundai Staria under the Chevrolet badge, offering electric and hybrid options as early as 2028. A compelling family sedan Family sedans remain a vital part of the American automotive landscape, as evidenced by their solid sales figures amid a growing market of crossovers, SUVs, and trucks. The mainstream mid-size family sedan segment remains contentious, with juggernauts like the Toyota Camry and the Honda Accord. Just don't count out the 2025 Hyundai Sonata because it's got a ton of appealing standard features and a facelift that makes the Sonata look more refined and aggressive. What is the Sony Honda Mobility Afeela 1? Watch More The 2025 Hyundai Sonata in base trim is powered by a 191-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder powering the front wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission, as opposed to the more prevalent (and less fun) continuously variable transmission found in most of its competitors. You can upgrade to all-wheel drive, as a benefit to those in harsher climates. The gas Sonata comes in four trim levels with the base SE starting at $26,900 and topping out with the N Line at $35,500. That trim level gets the more powerful 290-hp 2.5-liter turbo four with a dual-clutch automatic transmission. The base engine and FWD offer an EPA-estimated 28 city, 38 highway, and 32 combined. By providing your email address, you agree that it may be used pursuant to Arena Group's Privacy Policy. We may receive compensation. The refresh across all trims last year gave the Sonata a bigger grille and a thin set of LED daytime running lights that sit atop the quad headlights. The cabin now features dual 12.3-inch infotainment touchscreens seamlessly integrated into a single curved display panel. The steering wheel sports a refreshed three-spoke design, while the gear selector has been relocated from the center console to a column-mounted rectangular knob found in other Hyundai models. The Sonata's base price undercuts both the Camry and the Accord, and Hyundai is offering a great lease deal in August that makes it even more appealing. 2025 Hyundai Sonata lease deal for August Hyundai is offering a great lease deal for August on the 2025 Hyundai Sonata SE for $259 per month for 36 months with $3,499 due at lease signing (excludes registration, tax, title, license, processing or documentation fees, insurance, and any emission charge). The offer is based on $3,499 due at lease signing (includes $259 first month's payment $3,240 capitalized cost reduction). No security deposit is required. Amount due excludes official fees, such as taxes, tags, license, and registration. The lessee is also responsible for insurance, maintenance, and repairs. There is a $400 disposition fee due at the end of the lease (except for CO, IN, IA, KS, ME, OK, SC, WI, WV, & WY, where the disposition fee is subject to the limitations of state laws). Mileage limit is 10,000 per year or 30,000 for the lease term. The lease offer ends September 2, 2025. Learn more here. It also comes standard with a tire pressure monitoring system. The 2025 Sonata also won the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating, making it one of the safest in the industry. Source: Hyundai The Sonata's total passenger volume is 104.4 cubic feet. The front row provides a whopping 46.1 inches of legroom, and the second row has 34.8 inches of legroom. The generous trunk provides 15.6 cubic feet of space, more than the Toyota Camry and the Subaru Legacy. Final thoughts The 2025 Hyundai Sonata may not sell as well as the Camry and Accord, but it's both more affordable and offers more front-row legroom than both of them. The Sonata is worth considering because it provides a wide range of standard features, and the August lease deal makes it even more appealing.
