Big blow to guerrilla movement, top commanders surrender

Nagpur: In a significant blow to the Maoist movement in the Dandakaranya region, 12 senior Maoists surrendered before chief minister Devendra Fadnavis during his visit to Gadchiroli district on Friday.
The event, attended by state minister and Gadchiroli's co-guardian minister Ashish Jaiswal, marks a milestone in the state's ongoing efforts to curb Naxalism through its surrender and rehabilitation policy, in place since 2005.
The surrendered Maoists include high-ranking members, including Sapna alias Swapnakka Buchayya Chaudhary, 55, a divisional committee member (DVCM) of the Indravati Area, Ramdas alias Somaji Halami, 55, DVCM of Kutul area committee, and Shivlal alias Sukalu Pada, 60, DVCM of Kutul Dalam, among others.
The group also comprised commanders, deputy commanders, and members of various Maoist units, hailing from Gadchiroli and neighbouring districts in Chhattisgarh.
Since 2005, 704 Maoists have surrendered before Gadchiroli police, reflecting the success of the state's dual approach of security operations and rehabilitation.
Earlier this year, on January 1, around 11 hardened Maoists, including Tarakka Sidam of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee, had also surrendered before chief minister Fadnavis, further weakening the Maoist stronghold.

Tarakka's husband, Bhupathi alias Sonu, a veteran guerrilla, is yet to surrender despite seeking truce with security forces.
CM Fadnavis lauded efforts of the Gadchiroli police and emphasized the importance of rehabilitation in reintegrating former Maoists into society. He also appreciated efforts of Lloyds Metal and Energy Limited (LMEL) and their corporate social responsibility initiatives to rehabilitate surrendered Maoists.
Speaking at the felicitation ceremony of C-60 jawans in Gadchiroli, Fadnavis said, "I congratulate Lloyds Metals for training and providing employment to surrendered Maoists, which has increased their confidence.
"
Being an equal opportunity employer, LMEL has employed 65 surrendered Maoists, who are working in different capacities in the company in Gadchiroli district. Of 13 surrendered Naxalites who tied nuptial knots today, at least seven are working with Lloyds Metals.

Five Naxalites gunned down in encounters in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district
Bijapur, Five Naxalites were killed in two encounters with security forces in an ongoing operation in the Indravati National Park area of Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district, police said on Saturday. With the latest casualties, seven Naxalites, including top leaders Sudhakar and Bhaskar, were neutralised in the operation in the last three days, they said. "Security forces have recovered the bodies of seven Maoists during the ongoing anti-Naxal operations in the Indravati National Park area of the district," a senior police official said. On Saturday, two bodies were recovered following a gunfight, while three were found after the exchange of fire on the intervening night of Friday and Saturday, he said. The official said the operation involving personnel from the state police's Special Task Force and District Reserve Guard as well as the CRPF's specialised unit CoBRA, was launched on June 4 based on input about the presence of Maoist leader Sudhakar, Telangana State Committee member Bandi Prakash, Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee member Pappa Rao, and a few other armed cadres. On Friday, security forces neutralised Bhaskar alias Mailarapu Adellu, a special zonal committee member of the Telangana State Committee of Maoists who carried a reward of ₹45 lakh in Chhattisgarh and Telangana, and Maoists' central committee member Narasimha Chalam alias Sudhakar, who had a bounty of ₹40 lakh in Chhattisgarh, was killed on Thursday, he said. The official said the identity of five more killed Naxalites, two of them women, is yet to be ascertained. A huge cache of arms and ammunition, including two AK-47 rifles, has been seized in the operation, he said, adding that search and area domination operations were underway in the surrounding forested terrain to track remaining Maoist cadres and ensure complete sanitisation of the region. A few security personnel have suffered injuries due to snakebite, honeybee sting, dehydration and other operational injuries during the operation and were provided medication, the official said. The outlawed CPI general secretary Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju was neutralised in the Bastar region on May 21.

Late night Ludhiana quarrel: Man booked for stabbing neighbour in drunken rage; accused arrested LUDHIANA: Sahnewal police on Friday arrested a man who stabbed his neighbour while in a drunken state. The victim was admitted to the govt hospital in Sector 32, Chandigarh. The arrested accused is Sanjay Paswan, a labourer who lives in a labour quarter on rent in village Bilgah. The police booked Paswan on the complaint of Amdoh Shah, a neighbour of the accused. The complainant said the incident occurred on May 31. He was present in his rented accommodation when he heard that Sanjay was fighting with his brother in an inebriated condition. During their quarrel, Sanjay's brother came to his room and slept there to avoid further altercation with Sanjay. Shah added that later in the night, Sanjay tried to barge into his room by smashing the door. As he tried to stop him, Sanjay stabbed him in the stomach with a knife. On hearing his cries, the landlord of the labour quarter intervened and rescued him. Thereafter, Sanjay ran away from the spot, and Shah was taken to the hospital. ASI Gurmeet Singh , the investigating officer from Sahnewal police station, said the victim is admitted to the hospital. The police recorded his statement on Friday and lodged an FIR under sections 115 (2) (voluntarily causing hurt) and 118 (2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means) of BNS against the accused, who was arrested by the police.
