Priyanka Gandhi slams ECI, says it must rethink if it believes its responsibility is only towards BJP
Priyanka Gandhi's attack on the poll body came after the Chief Electoral Officers of at least three states on Thursday (August 7, 2025) asked Congress leader Rahul Gandhi to share the names of electors he claimed were either included or excluded wrongfully from the voter lists along with a signed declaration for the poll authorities to initiate 'necessary proceedings' in the matter.

ECI sources said Rahul Gandhi should either sign a declaration under the Conduct of Election Rules and submit the list of people who he claims were either wrongfully included or removed from the voters' list or he should 'stop misleading' the people of India and 'stop making baseless allegations' against the poll authority.
Asked about the issue, Priyanka Gandhi said, 'The affidavit they are asking for is under a law in which you have to give a petition within 30 days; otherwise, nothing will happen. So why are they asking for the affidavit? Such a big disclosure has been made. If it is unintentional, then investigate it.'
'Why is the Election Commission not giving the voters' list in a machine readable format and why is it not investigating?' she asked.
'Instead, you are saying to sign an affidavit, Which is a bigger oath than what we take in Parliament. We have taken that oath; we are saying everything in public and are showing the evidence to you,' Ms. Gandhi told reporters in the Parliament House complex.
Reiterating Rahul Gandhi's claims, she said over one lakh fake votes have been found in an Assembly, which means whoever they vote for will win.
On ECI's critical comments, Ms. Gandhi asked how do they know the claims are wrong when they have not investigated it.
'The evidence is in front of them and they have to investigate it. How can they say it is wrong unless they investigate it. There can be no matter bigger than this,' she said.
'This is the democracy of our nation. It is not a joke. It is not about one party or another party. If they have not investigated it they cannot say it is rubbish,' she asserted.
'I am sorry they have a bigger responsibility. If they feel their responsibility is only to the BJP and only to one party, they need to rethink it because, as my brother said, a day will come when other people are in power, and then those who have colluded in this kind of complete destruction of our democracy will have to answer for it,' she said.
They should be aware that they will have to answer for it, Ms. Gandhi added.
She said INDIA bloc leaders will decide together on how to go about the issue of poll rigging going forward.
But it is clear that there is some wrongdoing in this matter, Ms. Gandhi said.
'This would be clear to you and the manner in which their leaders are responding has also made it clear. If you go to a teacher and say cheating is happening, will the teacher slap you or say that it would be checked? Here they are abusing him (Rahul Gandhi) and then say to sign an affidavit. If such a big 'kaand' is happening under your (ECI) nose and you are not doing it, then investigate it,' the Congress leader said.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha has claimed there was 'vote chori' of 1,00,250 votes in a Karnataka constituency, with 11,965 duplicate voters in the segment, 40,009 voters with fake and invalid addresses, 10,452 bulk voters or single-address voters, 4,132 voters with invalid photos and 33,692 voters misusing Form 6 for new voters.

Rahul's Rhetorical Revolution Requires Receipts
Democracy is built not on faith alone, but also on trust. Faith is blind; trust is earned. Faith allows you to believe in gods. Trust allows you to believe in institutions. When leaders mistake democracy for theology, when they assume the divine right to declare, accuse, and pronounce guilt without trial, they are not playing politicians. They are playing gods and jurors in the same breath. Standing not in court, not even in Parliament, but in the unmediated court of public opinion, Rahul Gandhi declared that '2,000 sq kms of Indian land is under Chinese occupation,' that 'Chinese soldiers are beating up Indian Army personnel.' An angry Justice Dipankar Datta asked him the only question that matters, 'Were you there? Do you have credible proof?' Rahul's bombastic blitzkrieg was loud on grandiloquence but poor on evidence—'India's election system is already dead.' He claimed, '1.5 lakh voters out of 6.5 lakh were fake,' and had '100 per cent proof.' But he offered none. A sustained offensive is not the same as a sustainable one. If Rahul seeks a transition from the politics of provocation to the politics of power, then he must understand a crucial principle of democratic responsibility: Proof precedes Power. Volume cannot replace verification. This isn't about Rahul alone. Indian politics has long been populated by leaders who believe that volume can replace verification. Indira Gandhi claimed foreign agents were trying to sabotage her government; an accusation that helped justify the Emergency. Narendra Modi's detractors accuse him of promising `15 lakh in every Indian's account when he had said if all the black money abroad is brought back, it would be so much that every person will get `15 lakh. Arvind Kejriwal declared that 'every big leader is corrupt,' only to retract when lawsuits followed. Mamata Banerjee once claimed that the Election Commission was colluding with the BJP, yet could provide no proof beyond her own sense of betrayal. If the bipartisan tradition of accusation without adjudication are left unchallenged, they become precedents. Precedents corrode institutions.

Punjab: Khaira's ex-PSO arrested in drug case from Delhi airport
Punjab Police on Saturday arrested a former personal security officer (PSO) of Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira from Indira Gandhi International Airport in connection with a drug case registered in 2015 in which Khaira was also nominated. An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) with Punjab Police, Joga Singh had been absconding since being nominated as an accused on September 28, 2023. His bail plea was rejected by the sessions court in Fazilka in October 2023 and then by the high court in January 2024, but he remained at large. Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira Joga Singh was detained by immigration authorities at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi while attempting to flee to Australia due to a look-out circular (LoC) issued by the special investigation team (SIT) in November 2023. He was taken on transit remand and produced before a court in Jalalabad, which granted police his five-day remand. The case The case was first registered in March 2015 by the Fazilka police after 2-kg heroin, 24 gold biscuits, pistols, Pakistani SIM cards and a mobile phone besides a firearm were seized and nine people—including Gurdev Singh, an alleged close aide of Khaira—were arrested. During the investigation, MLA Khaira's name surfaced due to frequent phone calls with Singh. Khaira, the three-time Congress MLA from Bholath, was arrested in 2023 from his Chandigarh residence following a probe by the special investigation team (SIT) led by then Jalandhar DIG and now Ludhiana police commissioner Swapan Sharma. He was granted bail by the Punjab and Haryana high court. The former PSO was nominated after he did not join the investigation being conducted by the SIT. Punjab finance minister and chairman of the 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' Cabinet Subcommittee, Harpal Singh Cheema, said the arrest of Joga Singh is a significant step toward justice for the victims of the 2015 Gurdev Singh Debi drug racket. Addressing a press conference, Cheema said the decade-long delay in the case was due to the alleged involvement of those who had political connections with the Shiromani Akali Dal and Congress leadership. The finance minister further said that Joga Singh played a key role in facilitating communication between Sukhpal Singh Khaira and both Gurdev Singh, who has been convicted in this case, and Gurdev's UK-based sister Charanjit Kaur. The minister said Joga Singh used his mobile phone to arrange these calls while Gurdev Singh was a fugitive. The minister further added that call detail analysis showed multiple instances where Joga Singh and Gurdev Singh were at the same location, even in Khaira's absence. Government claims misleading: Khaira Khaira termed Cheema's allegations a malicious and baseless propaganda concerning the arrest of his former PSO Joga Singh. 'This misinformation campaign, primarily fueled by certain AAP leaders, is a deliberate attempt to tarnish my reputation and mislead the public. I stand firm in my commitment to truth and justice. The recent judicial interventions by the Supreme Court provide irrefutable evidence of my stance,' said Khaira. 'The Supreme Court, in its order dated April 10, 2024, stayed all proceedings related to the NDPS case involving me until the next hearing. The court, presided over by Justices Bela M Trivedi and Pankaj Mithal, had directed the state not to proceed further with the trial before the trial court. This stay order dismantles any narrative suggesting ongoing culpability or urgency in the case,' said Khaira. 'The legal battle surrounding this case has a complex history in which the Punjab and Haryana high court granted me bail on January 4, 2024, with Justice Anoop Chitkara recording a prima facie satisfaction that I was not guilty. The Supreme Court, on January 18, 2024, upheld the bail decision, rejecting an appeal by the Punjab government and AAP, further reinforcing the lack of substantive evidence against me,' said Khaira. He said the 'smear' campaign appears to be a continuation of 'political vendetta'. 'The timing of Joga Singh's arrest at Delhi airport, as reported on August 9, and the subsequent amplification of false narratives suggest a coordinated effort to deflect attention from governance issues,' he said.

AAP slams ‘mismanagement by 4-engine BJP govt' over deaths, water crisis in Delhi amid heavy rain
With heavy rain lashing the Capital on Saturday, deaths of eight persons in two separate incidents, flooding of the Giri Nagar pumping station in South Delhi's Kalkaji halting water supply to several areas, and waterlogging in multiple parts of the city brought the BJP government under criticism from the AAP. Leader of Opposition and former CM Atishi said the flooding of the pumping station left thousands of residents in Kalkaji, Giri Nagar, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extension facing severe water shortage. 'Mismanagement by the four-engine BJP govt has not only submerged Delhi roads, but caused a water crisis in Kalkaji. The Giri Nagar pumping station is completely submerged. And the people of Giri Nagar, Kalkaji, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extn are facing several days of water crisis,' she posted on X, along with a copy of her letter to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. In her letter, Atishi wrote, 'Just a few hours of rain have brought Delhi to a grinding halt. Roads are waterlogged, traffic is at a standstill and even more shocking is that in many parts of Delhi water has entered people's homes. The pumping station of the Giri Nagar UnderGround Reservoir (UGR) is fully submerged in water… So no water is being supplied to the Kalkaji, Giri Nagar, Govindpuri and Govindpuri Extension.' She called the situation 'the direct result of administrative negligence' and urged the Chief Minister to instruct PWD and Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh to restore supply immediately. The heavy rain that caused the flooding began late Friday night, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) upgrading alerts through the early hours of Saturday from yellow to orange and then to a red alert by 6.20 am. By 8.30 am, Safdarjung recorded 78.7 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours, while Pragati Maidan logged 100.3 mm. The IMD warned of potential waterlogging, traffic congestion, and reduced visibility across the city. The AAP, in an official statement on Saturday evening, also attacked the BJP-led Delhi government over citywide waterlogging. The party's Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj alleged 'corruption worth crores in desilting works' and linked it to the Jaitpur incident in which seven people, including two children, died after a wall collapsed amid heavy rain. He further alleged that a 2.5-year-old child drowned in an open manhole, saying, 'I had warned CM Rekha Gupta that opening manholes during rain is a dangerous shortcut.' Senior leader Manish Sisodia, as per the statement, called the Jaitpur incident 'deeply painful' and expressed condolences to the bereaved families. Atishi also posted videos of waterlogged roads in Palam, Dhaula Kuan and Saket, stating, 'On Raksha Bandhan, the entire city is submerged… The collapse of governance under Rekha Gupta's government is preventing brothers from meeting their sisters.' AAP MLAs Sanjeev Jha and Kuldeep Kumar, also questioned the government's claims of monsoon preparedness and blamed the BJP to be responsible for lapses in civic bodies.
